Title: WF15 Faux Patina Challenge (open 2/21-3/1) WINNER ANNOUNCED
Post by: howdyheidi on February 12, 2015, 03:46:12 PM
Welcome to Winterfest 15!  :smitten:

My challenge is to do a background technique called Faux Patina!  You will need cardstock, an embossing folder, inks, an Embossing Ink Pad like Versamark and a metallic embossing powder.

Rules:

1) Follow the technique steps below to create a background panel.
2) Share a photo of your panel in the Artsy Inkers gallery.  Please leave a note in this thread with a link  to your gallery post. (just ask for help if you have trouble linking, etc)
3) There will be a RAK from my stash to a random participant.  You will receive 1 entry for doing the technique and sharing at least one background panel and 1 additional entry for each completed project you share.  Completed projects may be cards, ATCs, scrapbook pages, etc.
4) You may combine this challenge with any others that are combinable!

Technique steps:

1) Emboss your piece of cardstock with any embossing folder you wish.
2) Sponge on at least 2 different ink colors, starting from light and going to dark.  At this point, you will probably want to set the piece aside to dry completely, or dry with a heat gun.
3) Lightly press the Versamark ink pad on the panel, mostly focusing on the embossed (raised) portions.  Add your metallic embossing powder.  You may want to brush away embossing powder if you want there to be less metallic portions.
4) Heat emboss the panel.

Now you are finished and can share your project in the Artsy Inkers gallery and make it into a project!

Please ask any questions here and share any tips you would like too!

Okay, I think my OP is complete now. Even though the challenge does not officially open till tomorrow, please feel free to ask any questions now!  I am glad to see a little excitement about Winterfest.

LeighAnn, can't wait to see your teal embossing powder.  This technique was originally designed, I think, to mimic the color of copper patina, so that teal embossing powder might look pretty neat!

What a cool technique.  I've got ideas swirling around my brain.  And your examples are gorgeous.

LeighAnn - how cool - metallic teal embossing powder.

Oh this sounds cool!

So Heidi, the idea is not to cover ever inch of raised embossed area like you would be able to do when using a brayer and versamark, right? But instead have portions and parts/pieces that have versamark....

Terrific choice of techniques Heidi.  I had so much fun when I hosting this one at a 2Peas event...but that was a few years ago and it's a great time to bring this wonderful technique back.  I look forward to playing.

Melissa, you certainly can cover every inch of the embossed portion if you want. In fact, by putting the versamark pad directly to the paper, you will probably get a little in the recessed areas too. It is kindof up to you how much "metal" you want showing, but I think it should be a highlight, not the main portion.  Does that make sense?

Jan, I do not remember your hosting this technique at TwoPeas, so it was probably before my time.  I think it is great to go back to old techniques too, but this one is new to me!

Have fun and please continue to ask questions if you have any.   O0

I have this challenge open and started.  From the tutorial posted it would seem that a person would want the metalic embossing on just random parts of the embossed piece not just the the raised part.  But is this challenge about the raised part?  Sorry, I am confused again!

So, I am not going to be picky about where your metallic portions are.  When I did mine, it seemed like most of the metallic stuff got on the raised parts and less in the lower parts.  So your metallic parts can be wherever you like. I honestly think it is going to depend on which embossing folder you use too, so go with the flow?

I hope that helps.

I explained how I did the background and the card in the gallery posting.  Here is the finished card. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=1076#top_display_media)

I am sorry that every single picture I take of a project and every single scan I make is in some way crooked.  Geez.  Please keep in mind when looking at my projects that they are straight in person, I just can't take a straight picture to save my life.

Howdyheidi thank you for hosting this challenge....I had fun trying it out.

So rubbing the ink pad on my embossed pieces did not work so well for me.  The first 2 I did, I got ink all over the piece. :tickedoff:  I had to rub powder off the debossed areas or I was going to have a solid piece of silver paper.

So I used my brayer on the next 3 and it worked much better, except for the last one. I think part of the problem is that 4 of the folders I used are by Darice and they don't emboss as deeply as cuttlebug and Sizzix, which is fine when using regular cardstock, but not so go if your using watercolor paper and plan to ink the raised portions.

I'll take pictures tomorrow when the sun is out.

Good observations. I actually had to do a bit of brushing off the extra powder on my sample that is the Darice folder (the poppy one) and the other two are Cuttlebug and Sixxiz.    Thanks for sharing!

I made 2 backgrounds last night. One I don't like so much. I think it was a bad choice of folder and color combo.
I will share my pieces when I get them made into cards, hopefully today!

I took the picture of the backgrounds in my craft room and the lighting wasn't good at all so that is why they look so different from the cards, I waited to take pictures of them today using daylight

Great cards, Connie.

To put the link in, just click on the button with the globe on it - the second one from the left in the row just above the smiley faces.  A box will pop up, you paste the url in the box, click ok and then you can name the link.

here are just my BGs I did tonight....I am still working on if I am making these two into a card:

flower swirls (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1089&message_id=37f7548963e4da3abb6c158d6406d8d2&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

This was fun though...I do want to try a few different ways to add the versa mark and see the results.  I do have a "lapis" color metallic EP that might be fun!

Thank you Heidi for a fun and creative challenge!!

Melissa, what a pretty result.  That pesky copper embossing powder is lovely though! I may have to put that on my wish list.

Thanks so much for taking the time to play in my challenge!

I'm loving everyone's results so far and have seen some EFs I need to add to my collection!

Melissa, I know in your upload you mentioned having trouble with static cling,  I don't have one of those powder tool things so I use a baby sock with baby powder and cornstarch in it and it works pretty well. Sometimes I will use a dryer sheet too!

Here's my finished card using one of my backgrounds- you'll see some stray powder made its way but I think it gives a distressed look to it so I left it on there instead of trimming it off.
http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1093

And here's a background I did that I'm kinda stuck on what to do. I don't love it, don't hate it but not sure what direction to go in next!
http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1094
No idea why my picture is warped looking.

This was a fun technique challenge, Heidi! After looking through my EFs last night, I picked out 2 folders that I just have to try this technique on. I'm hoping I can find time to do so soon.

Heidi, in your instructions you say to emboss your CS and then apply ink.  Is it ok if I apply the ink first then emboss?

I have a BG I just did and I could not get ink very well into the recesses...I'll post it later to show what I mean.

Melissa, my first thought is that you do it in the order prescribed in the technique to get a really aged look. But I will wait and see your photo.

Ok Heidi, here is my BG I did this morning.

lots of dots (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1098&message_id=eb7c57967ea1faa805c24d17a9f06484&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

You can kinda see the EP at the top more...but it's still dark I think.  But anyways, I thought about trying this EF again (unless you think this kind of EF would not be good for this technique), but instead color the CS then embossed.

What do you think?

Melissa, I totally see what you mean. I think that I am okay with you sponging your color on before you emboss so long as you add at least one color after you emboss.  Does that make sense?  That seems like a good compromise to me.

I think that embossing folder is really good for this technique!  I think the idea is that because the embossing powder must be metallic, that it should show up pretty well.

hth

Thanks for putting so much work into this challenge!

Thanks Heidi!  And yes it totally makes sense what you are say.... What I was actually thinking of doing, was color the CS with the chosen colors, then emboss it, then color it again in the same area I colored the corresponding colors the first time that way it darkens the embossing.

Here is my BG I made where I colored the BG first, etc.

circle BG (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=1115#top_display_media)

I did change my BG colors trying to mimic pottery more, but I am still having trouble controlling the EP.  I would like it to cover just areas here and there, bit it seems to grab on to the entire piece, despite I heat set the BG first before applying Versamark.  Maybe I should had let the piece sit for 30 min after heat set.

Thank you for a fun challenge Heidi!  I am liking the way the BG look despite it may not be what I was going for!

ETA:  I forgot that I was going to link a photo here comparing the two BG.  See below....

Melissa, do you happen to have a versamark or some kind of embossing ink marker?  That is what I used on the piece that I had debossed and that seemed to work pretty good just getting it where I wanted it, especially down in the stem parts, or when your done putting on the embossing powder just take a cheap paint brush and wipe away whatever embossing powder you don't want on there

Melissa, I really like your second piece!  Thanks for doing my challenge!

I think that if you really want less gold, you could also just use a brush to knock off some of the powder before you heat it.  You could be precise with a small brush or just random too.  However, I think it looks really good!

Connie, that is a good idea---I do have a Versamark Pen--so I'll try that sometime too.

Heidi and Connie, I am not sure why I didn't think to brush off the EP!  lol!!  It was like I thought it was permanent despite I hadn't even heated it yet.    I think I was thinking it'd still leave EP behind (like when you chase the EP off the page and one keeps staying behind).

Thank to both of you for your suggestions!

Oh my I am afraid I lost my way on this challenge!  I spent what time I had yesterday creating 4 embossed backgrounds. This morning it looks like I missed the intent of this technique to create the look of eroded metal.  When I initially went to the splitcoaststampers technique the video did not download.  Watching the video this morning got me back on track.  Heidi, I appreciate the awesome inspiration card you made for us!  If only I had been a tad less creative…Lol.  Now I need to take a break to refocus but plan to be back before the week is over.

This is going to sound strange but I used the little round inking tool with a clean foam to put embossing ink on my project.  It was easier to just get the embossing powder on part of the paper that way.  LOL there is always a "cheat" yah know.

LOL!As a true 'control freak', I am so proud that I didn't sweat the 'control the EP' for my entry. And I even considered doing the color before the EF-ing, BUT I used the steps as Heidi required. Trust me! It was tough! :tickedoff:

I made the BG first & then I used it as both a BG & an accent (center of the flower). Plus I still have leftovers of the original BG to use.

Fun technique challenge Heidi!

Sorry I was not able to share a pic of the BG before I used it in my piece, but that's life. And... I even added a brad to it--gave myself a gold star! #>

Yes, Melissa, bothe the arch frame & the castle were inlaid into the Patina BG. The princess & punched flower were layered.
The princess bear is a St. Dennis one from IBFS.

I've finally posted a couple of my projects for this challenge.  I actually have 3 more that I did but I haven't made into finished projects yet.

Faux Patina Background 1 (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1180&message_id=7813772517df8acce5ba3bc6d14aec0d&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Faux Patina Finished Card 1 (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1181&message_id=be5428e89bceb85a88b5b364a7f6134b&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Faux Patina Background 2 (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1182&message_id=b47f016fcbb91c99bce046137cb859f0&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Faux Patina 2 - Train Card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1183&message_id=43adbb27eb34db17d83147c02d5235fe&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

The train card is a combo with the Impression challenge.

Thanks for a cool new technique.

Thank you Craft Nerd and YellowCherrios for sharing your great projects.  They are wonderful and thanks for doing my challenge.

I am so happy so many have had fun with this. There, of course, is still time through today to finish up.

I was going to comment on Sarah's problem she mentioned she had with her BG being all covered with embossing powder when she added the EP to it....I read the tutorial on Splitcoaststamper and one thing she did was after she colored the embossed CS, she went over the entire piece with her embossing buddy---she pounced it in the video at the bottom of the tutorial instead of rubbing it with the embossing buddy to help keep it from getting too much of the ink on the embossing buddy.  Then she added the Versamark, EP, heat, etc.....

I haven't got to try this step yet, but I am going to see if that step matters or not....since the I had that issue on mine.

I noticed that too, so I tried my embossing buddy and it still didn't help on the first one, I had to take a cheap kids paint brush and brush off the parts I didn't want to stick, but I think my problem was I was too impatient and didn't let my ink dry enough first, On the second one I let it dry completely and it worked just fine

I don't have an embossing buddy, but I did rub my pieces with a used dryer sheet.  I think the problem was the embossing folders I used did not emboss very deeply, so that when I rubbed the ink pad on the piece, I got ink all over it.  I had much better results using my brayer to add the ink.

I finished another card with this base.
Faux Patina 3 Base (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1193&message_id=f3ae19f24a8615d410780ab022a60248&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Steampunk Shoe Card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1194&message_id=68bf2eb2da635bfa4898ee93ec537e89&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

I'm still not sold on the image for this card. So I attached it with removable adhesive.

I did two more card bases but I didn't get a chance to turn them into finished cards.

Faux Patina 4 (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1195&message_id=31e1af1b330db5f7711454bbd4354c10&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Faux Patina 5 (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1196&message_id=ac9063dc910863defda8c618a29479df&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Thanks for a great challenge and a cool new technique.

Thank you so much for participating!  This was a really fun challenge to host.

I need some time to figure out the entries and pick a winner.  Also, it is a 2 hour weather delay this morning so I won't have time for a bit.  Be back later with a winner!
