Title: "Color it In" Challenge #1 - Water-based Markers (1/10 - 1/17)
Post by: howdyheidi on January 10, 2016, 09:25:49 PM
Coloring has become a fad, but it is fun to do with stamping!  This challenge will be designed just to get you going with coloring, and to get you using more of your supplies.  This challenge will be open about one week.

1) Stamp an image.
2) Use the prompt of which type of coloring supplies you will use.**
3) Post a photo of the colored image in the gallery and post the link here. You may, but do not have to, make a completed project with your colored image.

**You do not need to buy anything new to participate.  If you absolutely do not have the type of coloring medium for the challenge, please just play along with the coloring medium of your choice.

The prompt is WATER BASED MARKERS. This can be craft markers, art markers or even crayolas.

I am happy that there are people to play along with me.

I just wanted to note that this challenge is not going to be every week.  It may be every other week, or just one week per month.  We will see how that goes, too.

I did want to keep the time limit to only one week, just to get people into their craft areas to get started.

Loved this challenge! I bought a new Penny Black stamp this past weekend that I have been dying to use and the stamp was made for the watercolor look. Of course it is an image of birds! LOL! The explanation of how I did it is with the gallery card here

Thanks for the fun challenge!

Darn I was happy with my coloring in person and on my monitor but it is now double the size in the gallery.  This shows many marks from the water's edge which can not be seen with the naked eye.  I had this issue with my ATC's posts too...it makes me very sad.  Is their something I can do to correct this problem?

Thanks for participating!  I like both images and the way you colored them.

Jan,  I see your image in the gallery and it looks totally fine from my end.  I am not sure what problem you are having on your end.

I must have felt like coloring last night.  I did three different cards with three different watercolor markers.  I used zig clean color real brushes on the first one, Here. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=87&pid=2276#top_display_media)  The second one I used my Tombow markers on, the same markers that I first acquired about 25 years ago.  That card is Here. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=87&pid=2277#top_display_media)  The third one I used distress markers on.  It is here. I enjoyed this challenge and now I have 3 cards finished and waiting for a sentiment inside.  Thank you HowdyHeidi for hosting.

Yes, I do, I have two or three more topics I would like to cover.  Those will be monthly, hopefully starting in February, but they also take a larger amount of time to prepare, and that is why they have been delayed.  Thanks for mentioning it!

There is still time to get out your water based markers and color in the stamped image of your choice!

I figured I better post this before I forgot.  The faces aren't showing up very well in the picture.  And I still need to put it on a card base and add some glitter but I did get it colored with my Zig Clean Color markers.  Which I absolutely love.

I did it! I finally got out of my rut and made a card!

Sarah, that card is so cute! I purchased some of those images during Black Friday and have yet to ink them up!

I fully colored all of my images and came back to it the next day. The colors didn't move much when I added water or even blend out much. Oh well, I'm still happy with how it turned out. Thank you Heidi! I, looking forward to more challenges, I really enjoyed your design ones last year.

I've been resisting the coloring book fad, just because I have so many stamps I can color!  I had to buy this Magnolia - Jingle Bell Tilda (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=14&pid=2290#top_display_media), because she's ringing a handbell, and well, I ring.  I don't think I've ever inked her up and colored her in.  Thanks for the challenge!

I stamped with Versafine Onyx Black on watercolor paper.  I used Tombow markers to partially color (mostly outline) and then blended the marker out with a waterbrush.

At first, I stamped using Memento ink because I thought that was supposed to be good with coloring mediums.  Well, it bled!  So then I heat set it for a minute, and it still bled.  So I switched to Versafine ink.  Well, just now, after an hour or so, I looked at the Memento label and it says, yes, it should be good with watercolor, once dry.  So I tried it again (it's probably an hour since I stamped it), and they are right, it does work!  It just takes a long time to dry I guess!

Bonus:  Hooray!  My first Christmas card for 2016 is done!

I just went back and checked out all the other colored images.  It was fun to see what everyone did.

Sadie, I'm not sure how you colored over distress ink without it smudging?  It was nice to see what you did with the 3 different water-based markers.

Jan, I can't find your image!

I am not crazy about most of the coloring books because the designs are so small  and the actual page is bigger than I want to color. I did see one with designs I liked, but I tried it and the paper was AWFUL!  I think Prima came out with a coloring book on watercolor paper, and the pages can be taken out to make wall art.  That might be fun.

Ooo! I like the coloring on your Magnolia stamp, Iring!  Also, you definitely taught me about the Memento ink. I did not realize it was okay for water based markers once it was dry!  Cool!  I usually use the Versafine, but sometimes that does not work that great on watercolor paper (for some reason I feel like it is harder to stamp with on that.)

Thanks so much for participating in this challenge!

LeighAnn - The stamps I used were part of the purchase I made during POD's Black Friday sale and it was the first time I inked them.

I didn't realize you could use Memento ink with watercolors once it dried.  The last time I tried it, the ink bled so I've just avoided it since.  I'll have to try again.
