Title: IKTOBERFEST 2014 -- SECOND CHANCE CHALLENGE
Post by: djc on October 13, 2014, 10:38:20 AM
Did you complete all of the challenges you had planned to do?  Are there still more challenges on your to-do list?  Here's your second chance to complete them.

This new challenge begins Monday, October 13, and ends on Monday, October 20.

The Challenge:

Your task is to complete any INF14 challenge you have not already completed.  It has to be something new.  If you have already completed every single INF14 challenge, then you may repeat a challenge. You'll find all of the INF14 Challenges on the board set aside for Inktoberfest 2014.

Combining Challenges:

You may combine two regular INF14 challenges per project if the original hosts allowed combining.

Requirements:

1. Complete the tasks as described in this challenge and the challenges you choose to do.

2. When you post your project in the gallery, begin the title with INF14 2nd Chance and add the name of the original challenge, for example, INF14 2nd Chance—Lighten Up.  Also, be sure to use two Keywords, the one for the original challenge and the one for this challenge:  SCCINF14.  That way it will be searchable and your project will, hopefully, show up by searching for either the original challenge or this one.  (I believe you need to separate the keywords with a semi-colon.)

3. When you post your project in the gallery, describe it. Tell how you made it and what you used. Also, return to this Discussion Thread to link your post here and to tell us how it went--the good and the bad. Be sure to also go to the original challenge thread and post a link. Let our hosts and hostesses know their challenges continue to inspire us.

Other
A RAK will be randomly awarded on Tuesday, October 21.  If you have followed the instructions, you will get your name in the hat once for each different challenge you complete.

Don't forget to come back here to ask questions and share ideas.

Have fun and enjoy your Second Chance!

Daria

Yay I'm so glad to see this "second chance" challenge. I needed it.

Snickerdoodle, no one needs this second chance more than I do.  I managed to make a card today for my daughter's birthday, but it doesn't fulfill any of the challenges.  I barely was able to squeeze in between getting home from visiting my sister and my daughter getting home from work.

Started a second try at Sadie's Mixed Media Challenge.  Decided to use a small package of "Easter egg glue" that I've had for a few years.

When I opened it, it was CLEAR!  I went ahead and used it for my cut-out and then made another exact cut-out to use with no-drip Elmer's glue.  So we'll see what happens.

Oh and since I have no other acrylic paints (yet!!), I experimented with using the white acrylic paint in the glue with blue Distress ink Re-inker ink and pink re-inker ink mixed in the glue --- so see what that does too!

Melissa, another way you might try to add color that white acrylic paint is with mica powders.  Do you have any Pearl Ex or Perfect Pearls?  If the reinkers watered down your mixture too much, you might try the powders instead.  I know they work well to color embossing pastes and gel medium.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this works.

Good idea Daria!  Yes I have the gold perfect pearls.  I will try that hopefully tomorrow.  TY for the idea!

I went to peek at the cut-outs drying and so far it looks like the swirls I did have lost their shape in the white BG in both glue bases.  I should had taken a "before" photo….didn't realize I would need to until now.

I had thought to maybe mix the re-inkers in some white acrylic paint first THEN add to the glue, but didn't think of it until after I had already added it to the glue.  I wonder if that would had helped with keeping the swirls.

Well I just watched a Clarity video about using shaving foam and reinkers on cards, it was interesting.  Perhaps you could try the shaving cream instead of the glue?
Here is the video:

Wow!  That is amazing how those cards "print" off with the shaving cream!!!  wow!  I will have to look into this!

Well both cut-outs are dry and I will post pictures hopefully later this evening.  Not sure if I will use them in a card or just redo it.  Bummer thing is that I have now figured out that most of my glue is very thick--so I guess it's drying up.  I do have Elmer's no drip glue---but it's on the thick side, I guess so it'll be "no-drip".  So the shaving cream may be a good option!  TY Sadie!

Oh forgot….Daria I did try to add Perfect Pearls to the white acrylic paint---maybe I needed to add a lot more b/c it just tinted the paint to a cream kinda and you can barely see any sparkle.  Adding it to glue without paint did color it and make it look like the metallic gold acrylic paint I already have (but now I may know how they get the metallic paints!).  I really think the droppers are too watery for my idea of using them in the mixed media challenge.

Melissa did you get good results with your small pots of acrylic paint? I think I may of missed that post.  I have been watching cause I have a few of those too.

The shaving technique is a fun one.  Do know foam shaving cream must be used...gels do not work. Last time I did it I could only find Gillette foam-lucky it worked perfectly fine.  The stencil technique also looked fun...thanks Sadie for linking the video!

Sadie, thanks for the video.  Very cool!  I've never seen shaving cream used with a stencil before.  I love using shaving cream, but I can't stand the smell.  Years ago, I made some marbled pieces, but I wouldn't use them on cards because of the smell.  I aired them out for days, weeks, months.  Finally, I just put them away, and I actually used some pieces a year or two ago--no smell left.

Does anyone know of a brand of shaving cream that has no fragance or other odor?

Melissa, thanks for reporting back on your experiments.  Good to know.

I went in to the craft room this morning, trying to steal some time to make a masterboard.  I ended up spending all my time trying to rejuvenate some dried up Distress Paint Dabbers.  Sheesh!  Anyone know of another acrylic paint that has a matte, chalky finish like paint dabbers--something that doesn't dry out?  I love that look.   I read something about a matte medium that you add to the paint, but I'd skip the extra step.

Daria

Daria I too would be interested to know if there is "unscented" shaving cream---that is the reason I don't use shaving cream.  I do have some and was thinking that maybe after I try the technique I can wrap the finished CS in newspaper for a few days.  The newspaper has worked in the past with other paper items that I have found that had odors.

Jan, I did not try my acrylic pots with the mixed media technique---mainly b/c I am not finished with the paint-by-numbers painting and wasn't sure if I needed all the paint for the painting.

I did two cards for Heidi's challenge, b/c I wasn't sure if my first card counted b/c I used Versamark and embossing powder as the ink to stamp over the BG…so I did another card with pigment ink used to stamp over BG.

First one with embossing powder (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=680#top_display_media)
This was to show the texture, but I may have to zoom it more with my computer--let me know and I'll be happy to! zoomed view of tree (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=681&message_id=53c029debaf066235c4c0111e98490f7&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Second Lighten up card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=682&message_id=8e2976466cacc5d9c3fde2ed561fbb56&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Now to upload my cut-outs….
Title: Re: IKTOBERFEST 2014 -- SECOND CHANCE CHALLENGE

Here are the two cutouts I meant to post yesterday:

CLEAR glue and ink pear (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=683#top_display_media)

Glue and Ink pear (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=684&message_id=8fe273c32e1b1626e3f662857014e241&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

I am still going to try to the glue and ink one into a card since there are not many bubbles…maybe I can cover up the bubbles with ribbon etc.

I am not sure I'll get to it today (or over the weekend) since we're visiting relatives later today and over the weekend, but I still wanted to show my results thus far!

And just to show a few BG I made, but did not make into cards for Heidi's challenge:

Other BGs for Ligthen Up challenge (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=685&message_id=7db9c50148b947650cdaf4233f64cc30&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Daria, I added tags and headings that corresponded to the challenges I was doing even if I have not made into cards---I thought this might help with searching encase one needs to see examples even if not a finished project.  Hope that's ok.  :)

Daria-I certainly am with you about the smell of shaving cream-yuck! For my last purchase it was even hard to find regular shaving cream (of course we only have a choice of 3 stores) seems like most folks have moved to gels.  But now we have a new beauty shop supply store--I have to see if they have a fragrance free option.

My backgrounds from then do not have a scent.  I am thinking I put the in a box with my jar of Fresh Wave (check out website for more info).  It is a pot of odor eliminating gel beads that I use for any odor that I get in the house. It is natural product that does have its own unique scent but I find odors are usual gone in about 1 hour. It states it is safe for animals and the environment. I bought it at a Habitat store.

I have started using Distress Paints.  They are kind of a blend of ink and acrylic characteristics. Pieces created with them have a flat matt finish.  But they are funny cause they don't feel chalky at all.  These come in bottles similar to dabbers but are much thinner plastic.  The is very liquid but one does need to shake before use.  I posted over at the Mixed Medium thread that Eclectic Paperie is closind at the end of the month but here is a link to a short but descriptive video on the paints (http://eclecticpaperie.com/crbawidipa.html) Of course Tim has several more on his site.

Wow!  Melissa, you've been busy!  I love your cards and your experimentation pieces.  Thank you for sharing all of them.  It's good that you used the challenge tags to share everything so they'll all be together when people are looking for information about the techniques you used.  Good idea.

Jan, thank you for that link and info about the Fresh Wave.  I also have a problem with a pine scent, but I might try it anyway.  Your mentioning this reminded me of the one spray I can use to eliminate odors--OdorCide.  My daughter brought that one home, and I was upset at first.  I told her I couldnt stand those sprays.  BUT, this one has a sharp citrus scent when sprayed, and a second later that scent is gone along with the odors.  I wonder if I could spray some onto some paper toweling and put it in a box with a smelly shaving cream card.  When I tried to get rid of the smell years ago, I put the pieces by an open window.  When that didn't work, I put them between the window and screen, shut the window, and left the pieces there for days.  When that didn't work, I put them outside.  When that didn't work, I put them away.  Once in a long while, I would give them the sniff test, and they still smelled.  I forgot about them.  Then one day, a year or two later, they were fine.  lol.  I think I like your option much better.

Good luck in the fragrance free section of the beauty supply store.  I tried to find a mousse for my hair that was fragrance free at one of ours, and they just didn't have anything.  Also, when it come to shaving cream, I think I did find one free of fragrances for sensitive skin, but the smell of the shaving cream itself was still pretty bad.

Maybe the crafting industry should come up with a foam spray for us that doesn't smell at all.  I'd buy it.

Daria

ETA:  I wonder if that stuff would work with grunge board?  That's something else that has an odor I can't stand.

I also made a bookmark.  I'm not sure it would have qualified for Leigh Ann's Book 'em Challenge, but her challenge is the reason I now have a new bookmark.  I started it during Inktoberfest and finished it today.  Well, I'll probably mount it on a black mat, but it's suppose to be one layer so I'm posting it that way.  I'm not going for any RAK's, so I'm posting my bookmark that was inspired by one of the Inktoberfest challenges.   ::)

Oh, my.  I had to resize that bookmark five times before it was small enough to post in the gallery!

Here it is. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=688&message_id=00b5c897be89b54259e6ef36e9e11e2e&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Daria-so glad you see you did get some good creative time!  Your masterboard and subsequent ATC's and bookmarks are awesome!  So good to see your work.

I did more creating yesterday for the 2nd chance and will post today.

Thanks too for the link to KWerner's use of the shadow technique-that's cool!

...Jan

PS...You said you still wanted to do something with your final ATC.  You might consider inking the edges with your blending tool perhaps even a darker color.  Like a mat it pulls ones eye into looking more closely at the piece.

.

WTG, Daria! Like many of us, I struggle with staying 'true' to hoster's challenge, but what is always fun to see is how we all give credit to the 'inspiration' & the 'spirit'--even when we stretch the margins of any challenge.

Hmmmm. 'Inspired By' might make a great challenge. ;)
Title: Re: IKTOBERFEST 2014 -- SECOND CHANCE CHALLENGE
Post by: djc on October 20, 2014, 02:18:04 PM
Jan, I did exactly that to all of them this morning.  I thought how much better the black-paste cards would look with a very narrow black mat, but I didn't want to cut them down to allow for matting.  So I took a black Tombow and just edged them--over and over.  It's subtle, but it looks better to me.  Then I took a dark pink followed by a dark orange and edged the copper-paste card.  I still would like to add to that last card.  I used black gems on the first three cards, and I would like to add some dimension to the copper card too.

I tried various items on a blank piece of paper just to see how they looked, and the best one was the Viva Pearl Pen, but the copper is very dark in comparison with the copper embossing paste.  I might just use some Judikins Diamond Glaze.  I might end up ruining it, but . . .

OK.  I got my Diamond Glaze to come out (no easy feat!), and it's done.  I put it aside, and I'm waiting a couple of days before I so much as touch it.  We'll see how that turns out.

Daniel, I thought about allowing "Inspired By" pieces count for the Second Chance Challenge, but I was afraid we'd go too far off the track.  Maybe next time I'll add that and allow for just one variation from the original requirements.  My bookmark already has the black mat attached. (What, no blushing smiley?)  What did you mean by a French or Franch Mat that you mentioned in your comment?

Daria. Wasn't suggesting challenge hosters be overly-liberal for 'inspired by', just complimenting you (& other AIs) who acknowledge the source of their work--whether it's a specific composition &/or a technique.

'French Matting' is a non-layered technique. Instead of using an actual mat on a piece you use ink/paint to simulate the mat. HTH, pal.

Well I went to clean up my craft table this afternoon and stuck my hand in some wet paint!  The white acrylic paint that I experimented with adding drops in re-inker ink to, I guess never dried over the weekend.  I mixed it up Thursday and left it to dry on the freezer paper thinking it'd make some pretty skins to use later on (that was before I learned it all relaxed into a mix of colors instead).  And it wasn't just tacky---it was wet!

Doesn't acrylic paint dry in 24 hours or so?  I guess the re-inker caused it not to dry?

I'm glad you were able to play, Jan.  It looks like you had fun with Daniel's challenge.  That Cuttlebug pumpkin folder has always driven me crazy.  I bought it and then realized that the pumpkins had holly leaves!  What's up with that?  I used to look for an embossing folder that had pumpkins with pumpkin leaves, but I haven't looked for a while.  I think I'll start checking it out again.

Jan, I just watched the video you linked.  I don't know why I missed it when you first posted it.  It was good to see those paints in action.  When Ranger first came out with them, I figured I still had the paint dabbers that I wasn't using (sooooo hard to get them out of the bottle--I was dumping them onto the craft mat and using them from there) that I didn't even consider purchasing the new paints.  I love the finish I saw on the video, and I love the way they react with water.  I also saw some Paper Artsy Fresco Finish Paints on the website; they say it has a matte chalk finish.  I'm going to have to get a trial bottle of each type to try them out.

I hope that the videos from Eclectic Paperie will remain available even after the store closes.  I'd like to watch them all!

Thank you for the link.

No writing names on paper.
No folding them up into itty-bitty pieces and bouncing them around in a hat.
No waking Heidi up to draw a winning name.  (Yep, she went back to bed after feeding the animals.  That girl needs to stop reading all night!)

"How then to decide who wins a RAK?" you ask.

It's easy.

Everybody wins!  All two of you!

Congratulations Melissa and Jan.  Thank you both for participating in the Second Chance Challenge.

I have your addresses unless you've moved recently.

I have one RAK ready to go, and I'll be picking up another one in a day or two.  I already bought the last of what I was giving out this time at the local store so I'll need to search for something equally cool, or if you're willing to be very patient, I'll order another one on line.
