Title: Ink21 - Storybook. ***** winner announced *****
Post by: Iring on August 27, 2021, 09:16:42 PM
I loved the coloring technique and cards shared by Daniel West during a stamp event that Daria suggested a month or so ago.  I wasn't familiar with Daniel West before his class.

My challenge has 3 parts to create a one layer card.  If you would like to do it on a separate panel and then mount it on a card base either directly or on foam, that's fine too so one layer in addition to the card base itself is fine.  I liked his layout in addition to his coloring.  Which involved masking the image and masking a border around the edge of the card.  It is so satisfying to remove a mask and see a clean white border around the edge of the card!  His background was ink blended.

Your one layer card should contain :

1. A masked image and a masked border.  (no masking film required, in the video, the mask was made from copy paper, use what you want)
2. An ink blended background
3. Color your image(s) using the technique shared by Daniel which he calls "storybook" coloring or I've heard it called "illustrative" coloring and Daniel also calls it "splotchily" colored!  Daniel West uses Copics.  I don't own any.   The only alcohol markers I have are Bic Markits, so that's what I used.  You can use any alcohol markers you have or even go for the same look with any type of marker.  If markers aren't an option, try it with watercolor?

Tips :

One of the things I liked about Daniel West's cards was how the images go outside the framed area just a little bit.  So try to do that when you are laying out your card.  That means you need to mask your image first, then mask a frame, that will cover part of your image mask.  A frame mask over an image mask.  Just ask if you have questions.

You don't need to do a lot of coloring if you don't want to.  Think snowman or even some mostly white or light critters.  Some of my sample cards have barely any coloring.  I just want you do give splotchy coloring a try.

Here are some videos :

Here is a short video (https://youtu.be/gGzXouT9QFA) where you can watch Daniel "splotchily" color.  He did this video for Scrapbook.com on World Cardmaking Day. This card does not meet the challenge because there is no masking or ink blended background.  It's just a quick example of the storybook style of coloring.

This (https://youtu.be/djhWxejwxac?t=882) very lengthy video that was a FB live shows the masking technique.  The masking starts at around 16 minutes if you want to skip the chit chat.  He also colors if you want to keep watching, or you can speed through.  I think he does another card later.  Hopefully this link (https://youtu.be/djhWxejwxac?t=2815) takes you to minute 47 where he is finishing up the card, I think that might be worthwhile to keep watching for a few minutes.  He adds texture to a snowman and snow.  Don't forget you can click on "settings" on the youtube frame to speed up the playback  ;)

Here are my sample attempts :

I think this (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=search&cat=0&pid=5496#top_display_media) was the first one I tried, during Daria's Christmas in July challenge.

I made this one (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5516#top_display_media) for Jan.  See, not a lot of coloring.

And this (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5517#top_display_media) was the card I made for my husband's retirement.

Don't forget to :
Upload to the Inktoberfest21 album in the gallery
Use Ink21 -  Storybook in the name and key word
Add a link here and tell me what you think of this layout and technique!

I hope you'll give it a try!
Oh, yes, and there will be a RAK for a random participant that meets the challenge!

I think this will be a hard challenge for me but I do love the final looks you got!  Both of us include ink blending in our challenge!

Thank you for hosting.

I have never cared to much for masking, but I like the looks of it, need to watch the video's to give me an idea :)

A very pretty finished card.  I like how the image peaks out along the edges.  Now let me think....

Connie, just look for something simple to mask to keep the fussy cutting not so fussy!  The retirement card I made was super simple!  The basket of flowers in the bunny card ... not so simple.

If you want to use a stencil to mask the edges of your frame, you can do that too.  Daniel used a plastic rectangular stencil with a torn edge look on one of his cards.  Or use a deckle edge die to create a mask?  Tear the edges of washi tape or copy paper ... lots of ways to make the frame.

Haha Heidi!  Yes, ink blending is pretty popular right now.  Now we have two card layouts to practice our ink blending!

Another TIP/warning I just remembered.

If you use masking film, be careful what kind of ink you use to stamp your image on it!  After you stamp on the film, cut out the image and place the mask over the stamped image on your card front you will be blending ink over it.  If the ink you stamped the masking film with is not dry, it will smear on to your card.  Ask me how I know!  I try to use the mantra "die dries" (on slick surfaces, like glossy paper and masking film).  I think I used Versafine Onyx Black on on one of my masks and it didn't dry, or at least not completely  :(

Thanks for the heads up I didn't think of the ink smearing

Completed two backgrounds.  Now I have to tackle the colouring which scares me.  The gentleman in your video makes it look so each.  His results are breathtaking.

Yes, Beth, the video makes it look easy!  I often stamp an extra image on a scrap of paper and practice coloring there.  You have too much work invested in your background!

Here is my card. I got to use a new stamp that I bought at the stamp show in July! Thanks for the fun challenge.

I love your cards Beth and April, just what I was hoping to see!

Isn't it so satisfying to peel off your masks and see a nice clean frame and image?  Love that part, ha!

Thanks for playing  :smitten:

Well I will have to say I think I bombed this challenge, I first stamped my cat, masked him, then stamped the fall sign, masked that then cut my frame, and the items didn't stick outside it very much but I just went with it.  Then when I went to color that went all wrong with the cat, so I would say going for the challenge I bombed it but as a card it turned out ok, so still usable I guess :)

Connie, if you don’t like the cat, stamp him over, color and cut out and pop the new one over the other one and then it should meet  your approval. The over all card is great.
I cover up stuff all the time.

Yankee I did think of that but we were supposed to be doing the masking thing so I though before I send it out I could do another and apply him over top :)

Connie, I'd say you met the challenge!  The cat sticks out from the frame and so do the sunflowers and pumpkins.  Another point was to try the coloring technique, and you did!  I think Yankee's idea is great.  If you're not happy with the cat, pop another one over the top, even on dimensional adhesive.  It will look like you meant it that way.  The other option might be to try "splotchily" going over the cat's forehead with a blender marker to lighten it up a bit.  You might like it that way, and if it doesn't work, go with Yankee's idea.  It's a pretty card!  Thanks for playing!

do you see the funny spot on his forehead, I tried using my blender marker and it looked awful, so I tried to go over with the other color and well you see what that got me, LOL

This was way outside my comfort zone!
I tried sever different images, but was limited by the. Markers. I don’t do alcohol ink markers, but I have some sharpies.
I had tried this witch stamp with the falling stars and it was out sitting there and I already had it cut out.
So I tried again and it worked.  I used a gray sky, cause they just disappeared on the black.  And the markers I had would work.

Nice card Yankee!  You did a great job coloring with sharpies!  I like the background and the stars and the way the witch spans across the background and the sentiment underneath.  Thanks for playing.

No problem, Heidi.  It does take some time and you had a busy week with back to school!  I hope you'll try it when you get a chance and go ahead and link it up.

Oh Heidi, and forgot to mention a hurricane thrown in last week too!  No wonder you didn't have much time for card making!

Yeah! Thanks for the fun challenge. I don't like masking much, but I really did like this challenge and the look of the card. I will be looking for the RAK.

Thanks so much!

April, your RAK is on its way.  The PO tells me you can expect it by Saturday.  I think this might be a record for me, it usually takes me awhile to get my RAKS packaged up and to the PO.
