Post by: djc on June 26, 2021, 11:49:00 AM
Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge – 2021

It may surprise you, but I’m still around.  I just haven’t been making many cards.  I still haven’t made any for Christmas.  I have just about used up my stash of cards so it is imperative that I get busy making new ones.

I am posting this challenge early because I will be out of town the first week of July which means I won’t be making any cards for a while longer.  However, I know that some of you make a lot of holiday cards in July so here is the Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge once again.

If you are in need of inspiration, check out Cindi’s past Christmas All Year threads; she posts an optional theme each month that you can use if it inspires you.

ETA:  I just signed up for the Card Maker Success Summit (https://cardmakersuccesssummit.com/).  It takes place July 15-18.  It will have 25+ video presentations by different cardmakers--all Christmas cards!  It is free to watch those four days as they show each demonstration, or you can pay to start the watching pre-recorded videos now or any time you want.

The Challenge:
You have a full month--July 1 through July 31--to post your entries.  I am going to ask Sadie to set aside an album for this challenge.  If she is unable to do that, please use the album set aside for Cindi’s Christmas All Year! Challenge, 2021.  In any case, please link your cards to this Discussion Thread.  The challenge ends on July 31 at 11:59 pm your time.  If they are in the right album when I check the morning of August 1, they will count.

Remember you must enter only new cards--nothing you posted prior to July 1, the first day of the challenge.  If you have a special technique you'd like to use that does not include stamping, your card will still count.  It would be nice to combine stamping with other techniques, but sometimes that isn't feasible, and I want your cards to be something you will love.  Therefore, your paste-embossed, embroidered, stenciled, Iris folded, die-cut, etc. cards are welcome.

Requirements:
1. Complete the tasks as described in this challenge.

2. When you post your card in the gallery, please label it with the name of the appropriate holiday and add the words "in July." For example, Christmas in July, Hanukkah in July, Kwanzaa in July, etc.  I say that every year, but no one ever does it.  Sigh.

3. When you post your project in the gallery, please describe it. Tell how you made it and what you used.  Some information that you could share:
Stamps:
Cardstock/Papers:
Card Size:
Inks/Coloring Medium:
Accessories:
Technique:

Next, come back to this Discussion Thread to link your post here and to tell us how it went—tips to help us or advice so we can avoid or fix problems.

Prize:
There will be a prize awarded at the end of the challenge.  Your name will go into the hat once for every card you post in the gallery and link to the discussion thread. OK. I already know that the next question is do I get my name in the hat 10 times if I make 10 of the same card. I'll say you can get your name in the hat up to three times for multiples of the same design. Fair enough? There's no limit to the number of different cards you can post. You'll get credit for each different card.

I hope you'll join us and begin making your December holiday cards.  Even though I won't be home, I'll be sure to check the gallery and this thread so I can enjoy your cards.  We can inspire and motivate each other.  Don't forget to have fun!

Thank you so much for hosting. I have big plans for this month with an insane goal of 31 cards.

My keyboard is kaput so I won’t be posting much, I am shopping for a new one.

That's great.  I'm looking forward to seeing all those cards.

Heidi, thirty-one cards!  I'll have to get my daughter to help me write out the slips of paper with your name!

Daria. I have never been so behind with cards.  Plus I have a card kit here that should help.

That sounds like a plan.  Last year, I almost bought a kit, but when I went back to get it, it was sold out.  I did buy the stamps that were used so I could more or less create the sample card.  It didn't get done.  Sigh.

I just added this to the original post in case anyone might be interested:

I just signed up for the Card Maker Success Summit (https://cardmakersuccesssummit.com/).  It takes place July 15-18.  It will have 25+ video presentations by different cardmakers--all Christmas cards!  It is free to watch those four days as they show each demonstration, or you can pay to start the watching pre-recorded videos now or any time you want.

I signed up and ended up paying $39.00 to get access now.  The schedule shows twenty-five videos, but there are also live portions that will become available after they go live.  I counted 30 episodes.  The videos are available through Teachable, and there also is a Facebook Page for chats and sharing.  (I'm not on Facebook so I'll miss that part.) There are many cardmakers who will be new to me, but I recognized some of the names:  Laura Beard, Therese Calvird, Justine Hovey, Daniel West, Carrie Rhoades, and Catherine Pooler.

I started on my kit.  It will make 16 + cards. The one stamp/die combo requires you to die cut first, then stamp, which is not how I usually do it.  It feels all wrong.

Heidi, is there any reason you can't stamp first and then die-cut?  I don't see how it would change the outcome, and it would be easier to do it that way.

Daria

Yes, it is because the stamps that fit the dies are in two pieces.  The head and feet of an elf, and the holly berries and leaves are separated too.  I think to be easy to have different colors if you wanted. I felt if I tried another way it may not fit right in the dies. I did mess up one elf stamping so I will need to cut another.

Well, Heidi, now I'm intrigued.  lol  It sounds like your cards are going to be really cute and worth the extra effort.

BTW, I haven't watched any of the videos for the Card Maker Success Summit.  My sister and I have been busy sorting her things and taking breaks to recover from our efforts by just flaking out.

I will try to watch a couple of them.  I paid because I knew I would not watch seven demos a day for four days; for me, it's much better if I can just watch them when I want to.
I mentioned it here because it is free on those four days, and I thought people might like to check them out--maybe watch the ones that sound interesting.

Daria

ETA:  I received an email from Justine Hovey about the class.  "When you register and are asked to join VIP, that price is only valid for $15 before it goes up and up and up, so be sure to join straight away to secure that amazing price!"  I thought I'd just watch some of it for free and then changed my mind.  So I didn't pay right away.  Darn.  I would have liked to have just paid $15.00.  I wonder if she meant the price was only valid for fifteen minutes because I don't think I ever saw it as low as $15.00.

I also wanted to mention that we planned a zoom crafting time next Wednesday at 7 pm eastern time.  And it will be Christmas themed. These usually last an hour and you will get a card done!  April is teaching and she already posted the supply list in private chat. I will post the zoom link next week. All are welcome. You can join from your smartphone or computer. You don’t have to have your video on if you don’t want to.

I made two cards today, inspired by Therese Calvird’s video in the Card Maker’s Summit.  I’ve only watched two videos so far.  Therese’s was really good I thought.  She made a very dimensional, time consuming card but also shared others that would be quicker to replicate.  Of course, I tried the time consuming version, thus only two completed!  I’ll photograph when I have better light tomorrow.

The other class was an ink smooshing background.  The only thing Christmas about it was a sticker sentiment.
I’ll let you know if I get a chance to watch more.

Awesome cards Connie and April!  You are on a roll!

I finally got started.  I'm so slow.  Just two cards completed, but it's a start.
I joined the Card Makers Success Summit mentioned by Daria.  These are based on Therese Calvird's presentation.  I like the 2nd card better.  The poinsettia comes out a little smaller when you use the largest layer as leaves, but I like it, and I trimmed down the top panel so maybe it wouldn't look too small.  It's all Connie's fault that I own a poinsettia die set!  Ha!  I liked her Christmas card so much last year, that I bought a poinsettia die, only to find out it's not the one she used, but hey, it works.

I tried a technique that was new to me.  I don't think I've ever used dies to emboss only.  I've embossed dies after die cutting them (to show details, or highlight the edge) but I've never just embossed them to make a background.  I like it!  Also, I'm glad I got to use the splat box I purchased recently and my Gansai Tambi's ... they were expensive and I misread the price when I purchased them, but they really do add nice sparkle.

Poinsettia card 1 (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5445#top_display_media)

Poinsettia card 2 (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5444#top_display_media)

Thanks so much for this challenge Daria!  I hope to watch more videos for more inspiration and maybe make a few cards based off each.

Cindi, it was fun to see cards that were inspired by a video from that class.  I love Therese Calvird's work.  Your cards turned out beautifully.

Connie, I loved your cards when I saw them in the gallery; thank you for posting them here.

Using the June theme of candle I made a candle to go into a Lantern die a girl that comes to my blog sent me during my foot surgery, adding a little bit of greenery to give it a Christmas feel.  I love how are other punches and dies can become other things, I used my leaf punch for the flame and just inked it up.

Yes, the red mat is embossed with a Sizzix folder. I forgot about that when I was posting. I thought it was a Tim Holtz one but it is not labeled as such and I don’t keep records of embossing folder names.  Thank you.

Connie, you are so lucky to have that wonderful lantern die; it's beautiful.  I love the way you used tools and supplies you already had to create this card.

Heidi, that embossing folder was the perfect one to use on your card.

Everyone, I am home now.  I just opened a letter from PG&E informing me that they are replacing the power pole (I think the one in front of my house) tomorrow, and I will be without electricity from 8 am to 4 pm.  I guess I should have stayed at my sister's for a couple more days.  lol.  If nothing happens to prevent them from doing that, I won't be checking in tomorrow.  No WiFi.

Oh no Daria!  I hope it is not unbearably hot there with no power, thus no A/C.  You're right, too bad you didn't know in advance and you could have stayed with your sister.

Heidi, I love your card!  The zoom was fun.  I need to finish mine up still.

I just want to let you know, I am really enjoying the Card Maker Success Summit.  I'm finding new people to follow on youtube and getting some new ideas.  I don't think it's too late to sign up for the free version.  You will have access to the classes for 24 hours.  They started at 10am this morning.  Daria posted a link near the beginning of this thread.

Cindi, they didn't come to replace the pole so I didn't lose power.  Actually, it's downright cold here.  Good thing because we don't have air-conditioning.  Until recently, we didn't need it.  We only had a couple of really hot days all year long.  Things have changed.

I'm so glad that you are enjoying the Card Maker Success Summit.  I watched an extra video on YouTube this morning that was posted a couple of days ago.  I'm glad that they are using YouTube since I don't have or want Facebook.

Heidi, I love your card!  I hope to see more cards from the Zoom meeting.

I've been watching videos like crazy the last few days as part of the Card Makers Success Summit.  Lots of inspiring presentations.
In between videos (and late at night, ha!) I've been working on these poinsettia cards inspired by the first video I watched, Therese Calvird's "Next Level Die Cutting".  I have a total of 10 poinsettia cards now including the two I posted earlier.  This time I used embossing folders for the backgrounds, played with framing/matting and varied the centers of my poinsettias (micro beads, seed bead mix, gems).  I also remembered I have Heidi Swapp Gold Color Shine so I used that instead of mixing up watercolor for spattering.  I tried all different methods of applying it, from spraying it directly (I didn't keep that one, it's a nice look but not what I was going for this time), to putting the liquid on a palette and using a fan brush, to taking the sprayer off and using the straw end to spatter it.  Lots of playing this week, which was a little different for me.  Usually when I'm making multiples they are exactly the same ... this time they are all just a little bit different and it was fun.

Very Merry (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5453#top_display_media)

Cindi and Heidi, I love your cards!

I am busy making birthday cards.  I made one and sent it off.  Now I need five more.  No Christmas cards yet.

Heidi, I threw my "embellishment" out!  When April asked me to stamp an image, I chose an angel.  (Maybe I missed something because I was late to the Zoom?). I did a horrible job coloring her and it just didn't feel right, or look good to scrunch her up!  Your poinsettia worked much better.  Your poinsettia is pretty and I bet even better in person!

Daria, you asked about envelopes for the fun fold cards we made.  The side flaps tuck behind the center and about 1/2 of each side panel shows to the front.  They become exactly A2 size.  Perfect!

Get those birthday cards out of the way and move on to Christmas  ;)

Cindi, I made two poinsettias and I threw one out. I picked that image  because April used one in her example :). The other one wasn’t colored well and just didn’t look right.

Thanks for the info, Cindi.  Seeing your card from the back helped me to visualize how it would close up.  It's hard to imagine this as an A2 card.  lol.

April, three more wonderful Christmas cards.  That dog image is so darn cute!  I was happy to see your folded Christmas trees.  I hope I kept of sample of the ones that Nora taught me to make.

I will have to say this first card took me forever to make and so I only made one of those.

I'm paying attention to easy and still beautiful cards.  By the time I get around to making my Christmas cards, I'm going to need some like that.

April, I love the rich colors in your dog card, and that dog is just so darn cute!  I like the other two cards too ... I'm glad you taught us how to make them  O0. I'm not crazy about the paper I chose for my origami trees.  I might re-do them in another paper ... You did a nice job making them in to a pretty card.

Connie, the colored candles are my favorite, but I certainly understand why you need a quicker version too!  Both are so elegant.  I do love the gray brick background behind both of them!  It really sets them off nicely.  I'm glad you were able to use the prompt.

I have two cards "in progress".  One is from Zoom where we scrunched up paper, spritzed and die cut.  It just needs a little something, and I need to dig through my ribbon, that's why it's not done!  Actually, maybe I'll dye some ribbon ...

Thanks for sharing the link Heidi!  I like the extra mats you added.

I finished another Zoom card.  For this one, we scrunched up paper then sprayed it with ink and later die cut it.  At least I think that's the order we did it in?  I actually cheated a bit.  To get an even more scrunched up look I ran it through a crackle embossing folder.

I had the background left over from my poinsettia cards.  I didn't like it as much after I sprayed it with gold Color Shine.  Now it matches the color shine on the ornament so it looks ok I think.

Yay!  Another card done!

Heidi, thanks for the link to the One-Sheet Wonder sizes.  I don't see too many of those for 6 x 6 sheets of patterned paper.  Your cards are lovely.  I also loved the penguin cards.

Cindi, that scrunched-up piece made a great textured ornament, and I like the layout on your card.

You guys are killing this challenge!  I love seeing all these cards in the gallery.  The only problem is that none of them are mine.  Sigh.  You are making me feel so guilty.

I spent my morning calling the State Franchise Tax Board.  They were very helpful, but then I had to search the house to find the documents they wanted.  It turns out that I never had and can't get one of them.  I hope the work-around the insurance company suggested works.  This kind of thing wears me out.

Keep the cards coming.  We still have eight more days after today.

Using two of the crinkle pieces we sprayed in our zoom meeting, I don't think I used the correct kind of stamps but like how they turned out. I hadn't used my glimmer mist in quite some time and thankfully they still sprayed, and gave these a nice shimmer.

Connie, i am impressed with your crinkle pieces!

Here is the 3rd set of my elf cards. I think this kit is pretty good. In the past they have not had much matting and finishing touches, but this one was more complete (although I still added some things).  I’m pretty sure I got this one on sale too. I feel they are a decent deal since they include card bases and envelopes.

Heidi, I'm loving the elf cards!  I'm wondering if I have a stamp that can peek out above something.  Great way to reduce the amount of coloring.  It was fun to see the rest of the elf too, with the cute sentiment sign.

Connie, you made great use of your Zoom scrunched pieces.  Pretty cards.  I'm sure they sparkle.

April, thanks for the Zooms!  They push us to use things we haven't touched in awhile, like glimmer sprays!

I had a busy weekend.  I definitely made these "Joy" cards assembly line style.  I stamped and clear embossed backgrounds Friday night, and cut and stamped the interiors of my card bases.  Saturday my Mom and sister and I went to the LSS and I found a few more sheets of red glossy card stock.  Yesterday afternoon I stamped and heat embossed "Joy" and did a LOT of ink blending.   I started out using my new ergonomic blender, but got sick of cleaning between colors, so I got out a makeup style brush that I have barely used, and that worked great!  I found a brush for each of the 3 colors to lessen the cleaning.  I also found that I like using my little Sidekick to die cut at the kitchen counter.  I used it for the stitched sentiment and the cardinals.  Last night  I spent gluing the bits and pieces together.  A total of 10 Joy cards, done!

Ink blended Joy (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5478#top_display_media)

I think my grand total is 22.

Thanks for this challenge Daria!  I hope to keep going this week.  While DH is away, I will play!

Heidi, thanks for sharing the links.  I really like the cards you are posting.  I have a free paper pack in my cart at Scrapbook.com, but haven't pulled the trigger and ordered yet.  They've been out of the envelopes that match Neenah forever.  They are nice quality.

Daria ... don't put the names in the hat yet!  I just finished 10 more cards.  I've been working on them the last few days.  I just can't get a decent picture tonight.  I'll try to photograph tomorrow afternoon.  I have an idea for one more design, but I don't know if I'll get it done in time.  We've been invited out on a boat tomorrow to go to a sandbar in the river, near the St Lucie Inlet.  I was tempted to stay home and keep crafting and watching the Olympics, but DH is home now and he would like to go.  I'll have fun once we get there, I just need a push lately to get out of the house.

Daria ... the cards you posted are really pretty ... now go make a Christmas card! Haha!

Thankfully April came up with the idea for me to cut some foam from one of my dies to make a solid stamp so I could play along in this challenge.
The first is the one I made in our meeting and just the other day I made the second one.

http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5487#top_display_media

The last one I cut another piece of foam from my tree die to make a stamp

http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5488#top_display_media

I also figured out how to do those folded trees that April showed us and made a couple quick cards, I may add sentiment to these just ran out of time and wanted to get these posted.

http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5489#top_display_media

Since you can make 4 trees out of two circles and I didn't have time for 3 more cards I tried putting all three on the card

http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5490#top_display_media

That is the last of my Christmas cards, thanks to Cindi's candle idea and Aprils zoom meeting I was able to get quite a few done this month and Thanks to Daria for hosting once again!

Here are my last 4 elf cards. I did not like this design. You used up lots of bits and pieces and it was not enjoyable to try to line them up.   I tried to add some pizzazz with stickles but am not sure if I liked it in the end.

Yay Heidi for meeting your goal!  How many did you make?  I'm thinking I should look up a "Sheetload of cards" and make some printed paper cards, or go check out your links.  They were nice layouts.

Connie, I like your folded trees way better than mine.  I need to try again with different paper.  I also like how you added the stars and embossed backgrounds.

I made 10 cards of this design, just showing 3 here.  I didn't think the photo looked blurry on my screen before I uploaded ... is it me or do the sentiments especially, look blurry?  Is it because we have to downsize it?

I've had enough fussy cutting for a little while!

Ornament cards (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5493#top_display_media)

I have another card I'd like to try, but I don't know if it will happen tonight.
We had a great day at the sandbar.  A little breeze came up, tide was coming in which brought a little bit cooler water.  We floated on the current a few times ... like a lazy river ride, walking up the sandbar and floating back to the boat in the current.  I say "cooler" but of course it was pretty warm!  Being out in the sun all day can take it out of you, so we'll see if I get another card made tonight.

Right now my total for the month stands at 32!  I'm happy!

Thanks Daria!

I've been wanting to make a Christmas card with this Illustrative coloring technique I learned in the Card Maker Success Summit.  This is also a stamp set I've been hoping to use.  Not my best ever, but hopefully somebody will like it.  And after just saying I was not going to do any more fussy cutting, here I am cutting masks!

Definitely only making one of this particular design.

Illustrative Scene (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5496#top_display_media)

I struggled to get a decent photo.  Ugh.  This is the best I could do.  It looks kind of washed out, but if I use less light it looks yellow-ish.

Oh, and lesson learned ... don't spray a card panel with a masked image with water.  I was trying to get specks in the distress oxide, but it kind of sogged up the masks and I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get them off cleanly.  I think actually, it moistened the paper layer of the mask.  It ended ok, but not recommended!  It did render the masks I so carefully cut unusable for future use.  I used Inkadinkado stamping mask paper.

This is card number 33!  WooHoo!  I wouldn't have done it without your challenge Daria.  Thank you so much!

This year, I'm awarding a second prize to an honorary winner.  I was looking back over the years we've been doing this on Artsy Inkers and discovered that April's name has never been drawn.  What's up with that?  Year after year, April shares a ton of Christmas cards with us, and they are all different.

April, thank you for the inspiration.  You are our first Honorary Winner!  Congratulations.

I would like to do the same thing we did last year.  I will send you a gift certificate for the online store of your choice.  Just make sure the store sells gift certificates and then let me know which one you'd like to use.
Once again, thank you to everyone for playing.

ETA:  Please send me a private message with the email address you'd like me to use for the gift certificate.

Woo hoo!  And you are right. April does share tons of cards and they are always different. So congrats to you April!

I enjoyed your description of how you drew the names, I felt I could really visualize it.  I will get back to you with a store, thanks!

Yay!  Congratulations Heidi and April!  Have fun shopping.

Daria, that was so nice to declare April an honorary winner!  I have won more than once and was feeling a little guilty  ???

Daria, do you have a total of how many holiday cards were made this year?   We can each post our total and then we can add them up easier than going through all of the posts.  We were especially productive this year I think!

Cindi - 33
Heidi -
April -
Connie -
Nora -
Did I miss anyone?

Just curious about the grand total.

Thanks for hosting Daria!

Cindi, I had to laugh about your asking me about a total count.  You should have seen me trying to figure that out.  I went through all the posts on this thread twice.  Then I went to each person's individual gallery to just count the cards and compare what I'd already come up with.  Let me tell you, going directly to a person's gallery was the way to go.

People made a ton more cards than they got credit for.  For example, your two sets of ten cards earned you six names in the basket.  Each of Heidi's sets of four earned three names in the basket.

This is how many times the names went into the basket, but it doesn't reflect the total number of cards made:

Nora -- 7
April -- 21
Heidi -- 28 (total 33)
Connie -- 14
Cindi -- 13 (total 27)

Total names in the basket = 83
Total cards made = 102

I'd say you guys did great!
