Title: Winner Announced*** WF16:Quick and Easy
Post by: Far North on January 20, 2016, 08:46:20 AM
This is a 1-day warm-up activity.  It will be open at-Noon Friday 1/22/16 and will close at Noon Saturday 1/23/16 .
Playing in this warm-up activity will take approx ½ hour including the activity itself, posting photos and posting on this discussion thread.

Prep BEFORE starting warm-up activity:  In this activity you will have choices to use some of the following household items that are not always used in cardmaking. It might be wise to check your supplies to know what you have on hand so you will be ready to begin. Items that you may choose to use include: 1 toothbrush for art work, a couple cotton balls and dense sponge like the cosmetic triangles.

Items you will need for this activity but you might not have on hand: 2 colors of Acrylic Paint (distress paint suggested) and Sandpaper. It would be great if all players have some way to sand a paper surface.  If you don’t have sandpaper… how about emery boards or cosmetic sanding block?

See you soon!...Jan

This should be interesting.  And I just have to point out that the only item listed that I don't already have in my craft supplies is the toothbrush.   ;D

Here (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2312#top_display_media) is my background.

I tried the weathered look with toothbrush painting.

Note :  I didn't have my craft mat, blending tool and a background ready to roll.  I'd recommend that!

I started to look for a tag, but gave up because I didn't want to waste more time and grabbed a piece of ivory cardstock instead.  I trimmed it to just smaller than a card front.  I used the Peeled Paint distress paint I had gathered earlier.  I didn't have ink out, so I found tumbled glass distress ink and hunted for my ink blender!  Haha!  I put the ink down, found the blender, then had to go back and find the ink again!  Ugh!

I followed the tutorial instructions.  I ran out of time just before I was about to ink the edges with a darker color.
One issue I had was sanding the edges of my paper ... I was using a sanding block, holding the paper in the air, but that was difficult without bending the paper.  I laid the paper on my craft mat, but I was afraid sanding on the craft mat might ruin the mat?  How did you accomplish this?  You can see a little darker ink, especially near the bottom of the background where the ink did sink in to the sanded paper.
Also, because I was in a hurry, inking with a blending tool felt like it was taking FOREVER!  I finally gave up and went direct to paper with the distress ink pad, then buffed with a rag.

I didn't know if I was allowed to read the tutorials first, so I started the timer and then opened the first tutorial.

I like the weathered look of this technique.  I think I will try again on a tag, or bristol paper.  I would use less pressure on my toothbrush maybe, and think about using spray ink (I have some Dylusions).

Thanks for the challenge Jan!

Post by: Iring on January 22, 2016, 02:19:11 PM
The first picture I am attaching is the one linked above, except I misted it with water (and the first mister I grabbed happened to have iridescent medium added to it, so it's distressed, but it shimmers ).  I wanted to lighten the color and distress it a little further.  I inked the edges with Walnut distress ink.

The next picture is a sample where i painted with a toothbrush, then misted with Dylusions spray ink and wiped dry.  The edges are also distressed with Walnut ink.

I think the darker (second, spray ink sample) looks a little like Ikat fabric.  Maybe it's the darker color?  The pattern the toothbrush painting took?  Totally unintentional, but I like it!  And I don't know why, but the color is quite a bit darker in person.

I just finished reading up on the details! How fun, thanks for hosting Jan!
Cindi, yours looked great! Love those colors together :-)
I've got one napping and one working on some puzzles so I'm gonna have this a go. I will report back in a few!

Ok, l did it.  I set the timer and did first one and no problems.  And did a smaller one same way.
Second one gave me some problems, but able to fix it and now the timer went off before I inked edges of second one .  Plowed on and did the third, had to do it twice maybe my brain dead by them or something.  Still not happy with that one.

I got an answer to my sanding question, I found it on another of Tammy Tutterow's Medicine cabinet tutorials (cosmetic sponge).

Quote
To sand, I hold the tag in my hand and brush the sandpaper on the edges.  (Never sand on your craft sheet, it will damage the surface.)

Anxious to see your background Lovepug!

I just tried the mottled technique (untimed, for fun).  I'll post later tonight.

Yankee, looking forward to seeing yours and your mottled one too Cindi!

Thanks Jan for hosting a fun warm uo challenge! I haven't had a chance to play with the spray yet so your challenge was a good start! I got sidetracked and watched her ink blending video. Great tips there, I always struggle with it.

LeighAnn--thanks for sharing so much!

Tammy is a wealth of information!...she coordinated the sizzix design team for several years then coordination social media for a several month until she recently decide to design some of her own products and is currently working with Spellbinders.  At the recent CHA she release her first products.  She loves incorporating fabrics and sewing into her projects.  She has recently worked on changes on her website...perhaps she closed the comments on these tutorials.

Cindi...so glad you found your answers...I wrote out responses twice but the disappeared both times before I could hit post.

I will share my toothbrush experience in my next post.

Yankee I sure hope we soon get to see your pictures...sounds like you had fun.

 ...Jan

Ok that was fun and interesting.  I did the toothbrush challenge and then scored and inked to make it look more like wood.  I hope that is ok to keep going to make it look a little different then what the tutorial looked.

Here is my sample.  Thank you for looking. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2316#top_display_media)

Here's my tags.

Quick and Easy Tags (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=2317&message_id=7efe7b3d8f7ffb60d9f384f3c992dc60&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

I did the mottled look.  It worked fairly well, but I should have die cut my tags from a thicker paper (I used regular cardstock).  Also I used regular acrylic paint for the blue one but gloss acrylic enamel for the pink one.  Inking the edges didn't really work with the gloss paint.  For the blue one, I started using the make-up sponge to apply the base layer and that did not work well for me, so I switched to a brush.  And I heat gunned the base layer.  I forgot to do that on the pink one and ended up with a bit of cotton ball stuck to the tag.

This was fun and I will definitely do it again.

After time was up, I tried the slotchy look and it was an epic fail.  I used a perfect pearls mister.  It did not work at all.

Thanks for another fun and fast warm-up challenge.

Oh, and I can't seem to leave a comment on Tammy's blog.

Great work on this challenge today!  Love that many of you continued to work on the tutorials after the time was up. And many worked on additional efforts to work through problems you faced in the first try.
Often we don't have all the suggested supplies and a few more tests are needed to create results that make you smile....and sometimes you don't know for sure until you add layers to put it to use.  Your efforts are applauded.

I too had my issues in trying out the weathered wood/toothbrush technique to see if I wanted to include it in this activity.  My problem was I had a toothbrush with bristles that are mainly at 2 different levels and the front ones were even slightly longer.  I had no idea how it painted so I used my first test to see what basic strokes with it would look like.  They were very wide and intense but I also  learned how to use it for narrower lines.  Below you see the results of my second try.  I used chipped sapphire and brushed pewter.  I think the pewter was interesting but IRL it is silvery and sparkly and takes away from the weathered look.  So I too am ready for another experiment with the toothbrush!  I hope if you have the opportunity to use your backgrounds in a WF challenge and you enjoy seeing it in a card!

Looking forward to seeing what others create in this activity tomorrow!  Thanks again for playing and sharing!...Jan

I uploaded my Mottled Tags this morning.  I like the results.  I kind of laughed at the tag on the right with the tarnished brass paint  :laughhard:  It reminds me of when sponge painted walls were popular.  There were some kind of ugly walls around!

I'm loving what I see in the gallery!  Sadie, that was a great idea to add scored lines and a little extra espresso ink!  Sarah, you mentioned having trouble inking the edges.  Did you sand the edges first?  It could be that your craft paint went on thicker than distress paint and might require more sanding?

Thanks Jan!  I had fun playing with these techniques.  I hope we see some of these backgrounds turn up in projects soon.

Done and still 3 or 4 minutes left on the timer.  I had everything ready, except my craft mat and that was my fault.  I should be using the remaining minutes to clean up.  Will upload in a few.

I ran out of time.  I am posting photo in gallery now.  I will add the link soon.

http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2326#top_display_media

So I did change what I did from the first tutorial a little. I did try white and Kraft Cardstock, I also skipped the sanding step.

I recommend the score lines but I do not recommend skipping the sanding as I do not think I got good absorption of my mist.

Also my mist was home made and maybe I ought to have added more reinker, even though it seemed dark enough at the time.

Partly, I spent quite a bit of time drying my pieces and couldn't do as much as I thought I might.  But it was fun to do, very fun!  Thank you!

I need to go comment on the other entries now.

Thank you, Jan, for sharing these tutorials.

So sorry I didn't realize that Tammy has blocked the comments.  I think it may be because she is making changes to her blog now that she is starting her own business.  She released her first product at CHA this month.

Do know that there are some other tutorials in the medicine cabinet series.  You can find them by opening tutorial tab at the top of her blog. (http://tammytutterow.com/tutorials/).  I also considered the nail brush tutorials and the medicine tape.  She also does wonderful stamping and inking work with fabric.

I did sand, but I think it may have needed more sanding.

Ladies you have made many terrific backgrounds while playing in this warm-up challenge.  And then even more when you continued to play!  Many thanks to each of you for sharing your creative enthusiasm!

I have mentioned before that inked backgrounds often look even better once they have stamping on top.  I have seen that in the gallery as players begin to use them.  Please continue to mention it in your descriptions so we take another look.  And similarly I share at the top of Inside, Outside and a Surprise Challenge (http://farnorthdesigns.blogspot.com/2016/01/artsy-inkers-winterffest-challenge.html) my #2 mottled trial background is used for the matchbox cover.

Winterfest has lots of wonderful challenges and so I want to wrap-up this warm-up with announcing the winner of my RAK so you can get back to making beautiful things!

I have pulled the random winning number from the Internet's random selector.

And the winner is YANKEE!
Congratulations!
Please send me your mailing address.

Here is Yankee's background post. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=85&pid=2315#top_display_media)
And her use of the blue background. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2330#top_display_media)

Thanks again for playing and looking forward to seeing your work in the gallery.
