Title: August tag swap *partners posted!
Post by: lovepug2 on July 14, 2014, 04:14:17 PM
I decided to carry on our tag swap that we did over at 2ps.

I hope you all will be able to join in!

The standard requirements are still the same
-must be a rectangular hanging tag
must have stamping on the tag

Most months I do a technique requirement and a theme. Sometimes theres a twist too!

I'm keeping it simple this month.

Start looking for that white crayon!

This months technique requirement is crayon resist.
I'm assuming a lot of you have done this technique before. If not, its pretty simple to do. You can google it and come up with a lot of tutorials, or search youtube if you are a visual learner like me. I found several good ones pretty quickly.
No theme this month, let the technique shine!

The sign up for the swap will be now through the 17th I will post your partners on the 18th. Deadline to get your tag in the mail to your partner will be the 30th.

any questions, just post them here!

Okay I am in. I tried some crayon resist a month or so ago and was really unhappy with my result.  This is a good push to try try again.

Thank you for hosting LeighAnn!

I'm signing on, Pug. I may need to refresh my memory on doing crayon resist. This technique should work well with Aug. KIAE. Thanx for hosting, pal!

Count me in  O0 I will go ahead and get mine finished by Monday since I'm having surgery on Tuesday! That way if something happens, my tag will already be complete  O0

Hooray! We're off to a great start!

It's been a while since I've done crayon resist.

I found a video  using embossing folders with the crayon resist also last night. I had forgotten about that way too. I may have to play around with that too.

Yo, Pug! I did a quick search about crayon resist & refreshed my memory. Thanx for the noodge.  Like CG, I already have an idea for my tag. And I'm pleased to hear that you may be offering more tag challenges that aren't swaps.  O0

LOL, Pug! Ann & Heidi deserve that honor!

This swap is up to 5 players & (unlike our KIAE swap) you don't have to mail anything until the 30th so...

Love my 'broke' crayons, Heidi! And like sharpening crayons. too! The 'flakes' make such great additions as resists & color. Thanks for the reminder, pal! O0

Sorry to hear that Ann & Kathy won't be part of the swap. I'll miss them both.

I'm making progress on mine, but need to take a break. The crayon resist worked in a very interesting way & I plan to use the technique for other parts of the tag I'm making--in tandem with building my KIAE kit. Love two-fers! O0

Ok well I changed my mind too. Add me in! I am going to do the tag before we go. Was hoping to do it today but another project took precedence. hehehe

Do we have to use only a white crayon or can we use other colors of crayon also?

Kathy, sorry about that! I missed seeing your question.

You can use other colors. I've always seen people using the white crayon for technique but colo would be fun! Can't wait to see how it will turn out  O0

LOL, Kathy! Glad you had a change of mind.

Yay, Pug! Mine is coming along, but lots more to do. On the part already done I did use both white & other colored crayon for the resist. Now that see the results, it gives me some ideas for doing other parts of the tag with color resist.

This is fun!

Awesome to be swapping with Kathy. I should have her address, but good reminder to transfer all those to my ipad now since my laptop is on it's way out.

My tag is pretty much done, I have it hanging on my cork board just to take a photo and make sure I don't want to add anything. I liked the crayon resist this time!

Ok, I have another question. I have never done this technique before. I tried it on kraft cardstock thinking that would be neat but it didn't come out well.

Now I notice most of the tutorials say use glossy card stock. Will it work on regular cardstock? Or just the glossy?

Thanks!
Title: Re: August tag swap *partners posted!
Post by: howdyheidi on July 18, 2014, 05:20:24 PM
Kathy, I did mine on plain white cardstock. I never thought of using glossy.

I guess I can see that the kraft might  not work as well.  Every kraft seems a little different too, in color and in how much ink it absorbs.
Title: Re: August tag swap *partners posted!

Working on white stock does tend to show up with crayon resist a bit more than working on colored stock, but... I like seeing how subtle the results can be. For instance... If I stamp an image on a yellow paper/cs, color it it with yellow, brown & do a final strong 'mask' of white, then swipe the piece with a blue ink, the BG becomes green. Once I buff the crayoned image it remains yellowish on a very different BG & I've used the base color & ink to make a brand new color mix. KWIM?

I have used white cardstock and it works well. Glossy works well too but it's hard to find. I haven't tried it on kraft or color. I wonder how it would work on the cooredinations cardstock(where you can sand it and it shows a different color?)

Sadie, that's no problem at all! I would be happy to swap with you! If that sounds good to you, just let me know and we can exchange addresses O0.

I have played around with crayon resist on my stamped images as well as with embossing folders.
I came across a blog post of Anna-Karin's where she showcased the technique with embossing folders. Her results were fantastic.

I did a part of my tag with an EF and used a burnt sienna crayon for the resist. I also used colored card stock. I liked the result so now I want to try some more with different colors.

My tag to Daniel is almost complete. I'm just kinda stuck on the arrangement of things.

Yay, Sadie! I'd be pleased to swap a tag with you, too. No prob if you go with Pug, tho'--she offered first. :tickedoff: ;D

Pug. I hearya on the arranging. I'm in the same spot. Hope to resolve that today so I can move forward on my tag.

Well my tag is almost done.

I tried the kraft tag again with different stuff and it was still a fail, LOL.

I found glossy card stock and used that in my tag. The only thing I noticed was that it wipes off some of the crayon color when you wipe off the ink. I like it though. Hope my partner does too!

Looking forward to seeing some tags soon!

I've had so much fun playing around with this technique, I'm considering starting another challenge for it.

Kathy, I found some glossy cardstock in my stash but I haven't experimented with it yet. I thought that might be the case with it rubbing off easily.
Title: Re: August tag swap *partners posted!
Post by: CarefreeSadie on July 22, 2014, 11:03:50 AM
Thank you for the offers to swap, but I am just not sure that any of my experiments are good enough to swap yet.  I am trying though to get a complete tag using this technique.  I tried 2 on my plain card stock and they are ok but I am not sure they look like what they are supposed to look like.  So then I pulled out some inkjet glossy photo paper and tried that........oh my is that bright, of course I used green and red distress ink so it is really green and red.

So when using plain card stock do you stamp and then color with crayons and then ink and then rub the crayon off?  I watched several youtube videos on crayon resist and some did that and others just colored and then left it.  Which is the correct way or are both correct?

The glossy one I didn't even try to rub the crayon off because I was afraid everything would rub off.  The first one I did I tried rubbing the crayon off and it just spread the waxy all over the tag.  It looks ok but not fabulous.

The tag I like the best I used the stamp and colored it with red and white crayons and then used my gelli plate to apply acrylic paint, and then rubbed the crayon off (which just kind of spread it around).

Help!  Am I at least on the correct path for doing this technique?

Thank you for the offers to swap, but I am just not sure that any of my experiments are good enough to swap yet...

And there's your problem, pal! :D Waiting 'til something is 'good enough' has stopped more folks from having the joy of swapping than any other thing I have ever encountered. BTDT & ran into that as a teacher & design-professional numerous times & had a difficult time not shaking people & urging them to 'just do it'!

Do I like every piece I've ever done? As if! But I do know that if I hadn't bit the bullet & gotten in the game, I'd be the poorer for it--not to mention the entire universe. ::) ;D

C'mon Sadie! Swap a tag! I promise you will enjoy the freedom it provides!

Ditto to what Daniel said!!

Sadie, I've seen so many videos  and blogs on the crayon resist. I played around with the technique, using various cardstocks and crayons.

Here's what I found was easiest to use-
I used just regular card stock for my stamped resist. It is a heavy weight card stock. I liked that the best, just because I knew I wouldn't wrinkle my paper when I buffed the crayon.
I didn't have much luck with the glossy paper. I'm going to keep playing around with that.
I first used my white crayon and added markings on my image, then I colored. I chose a large open spaced image for my tag.

Another fun crayon resist?
Take regular white or cream card stock or a tag and run through an embossing folder. Next, take a white crayon(you can use color here too if you wanted) and remove the paper and rub the crayon heavily over the raised areas. Then ink up the piece with distress inks or watercolor paints. Take a paper towel and buff the raised areas. You get a really neat effect. It does work best with EF's that have large raised areas.

Daniel, I finished your tag and it's taking a nap in the mailbox and will be headed your way tomorrow!

My tag is in the mail!

I used glossy card stock. Stamped with Staz-on then colored. I inked it and very lightly rubbed. Some of the crayon came off but most of it stayed. I really like the way it turned out.

I have to admit to struggling with an idea for this tag.  But I finally got one and started on my tag today.     I haven't tried buffing the crayon part yet, so we'll see how that goes.

Sounds like we're all having fun with this swap/challenge. For me, lots of fun is seeing how the crayon resist works when we ink over it & then wipe off any excess ink. Regardless of how much we buff or not, the effect is often amazing--especially if you use white crayon on white stock.

My tag is resting, too. I did another resist element using a stencil. Came out 'interesting' & gives me even more ideas for other resist pieces. Gonna be fun to see where we all go with crayon resist. It's irresistable & easy!  You picked a good one, Pug!

SWLady, I'm gonna try the resist again with stazon. That's part of the problem I had when using the glossy cardstock. My ink kept smudging when I would buff the crayon.

I looked up Anne Karin's page on using embossing folders with crayon resist and really liked what and how she did her examples.  Just WOW is all I can say about her results.  So I tried what she did with the brick embossing folder.  I can't get mine to turn out anywhere near how hers did.  I think I got too much crayon on the tag and the resist covered the entire tag when I was done.  So there was nothing to stay on after rubbing.  So I rubbed on more darker ink and left it set and will rub it off at noon.

I believe I will have several tags when I am done trying this technique out.  LOL

WTG, Sadie.

Yeah, my results were not anywhere near as good as hers. I wonder if it had to do with the crayon she used? It looked like an artist grade one. I just used a crayola one
Title: Re: August tag swap *partners posted!

Among the joys & frustrations all artists have is learning to manipulate the material they have. That is true for working with wax crayons. Regardless of which brand we work with, it's all about developing a feel for the tool. The most expensive whatever will not make your work better. Since we have chosen to be Artsy Inkers, lets embrace the 'artsy'.

I continue to explore how my Crayolas work for me & keep challenging both them & my crafting experiece. LOL! That's so heavy that I just have lay back.  ::) Done with the 'lay back'. Gonna melt some crayons on my metal. ;D

She used a neo II but really a crayon is a crayon right?  So my cheapo Crayolas should do the job if I just learn how to use them correctly I think.  Like Looser said it's not the expensive crayon but learning to use them that is the trick.  LOL!

What is an artist grade crayon?  IS there a brand?.  You don't mean oil pastels, right?

However, I do note that a new crayola crayon does go on a bit more smoothly.  If you need a new white one, the 24 packs are often on sale for $1 right now for back to school time.

Neocolor II is a watersoluable crayon.  Linky (http://www.amazon.com/Caran-dAche-Classic-Neocolor-Water-Soluble/dp/B000WN625W/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1406229735&sr=8-3&keywords=neo+ii%27s+-+watersoluble+crayons) It is what all the artists and mixed media people use. It's only $60.53 for 40 colors.....LOL

I bought my pack of 24 of Crayolas on back to school sale.  Am I the only one who loves back to school supplies?  I don't have kids and I have no need for back to school supplies but I so want to buy them.  I always loved that time of year.  And new school supplies are one of the best things.  Seriously, there is a reason my screen name is Craft Nerd. :D

Sadie, I didn't get a chance to get on here yesterday but I mailed your tag yesterday!

Melissa, I hope you'll play along and try the technique with us! I agree, even if you don't get a chance to participate in swaps it's still good to follow! I still have those altered tickets that I want to try out from one of the kit swaps I didn't get to participate in.

Kathy, your tag is a beauty! Love the results you got  O0

I got Daniel's tag yesterday. Quick condensed story of his tag travels- the envelope had become torn and was open, I got a note from the postmaster that I needed to come sign for something. They had it nicely wrapped in tissue in a ziploc bag. Luckily everything seemed to be intact. For once the postal service done good!
It's a wonderful tag, can't wait for y'all to see it and a of the details he put in to it!

Here is my tag I sent him-

Much as I love seeing the tags, I'm even happier with the chatter!

LOL, Heidi! You made the mailing deadline--so no prob!

Kathy. Cool that you added the pic to the post. Neat feature here!

Melissa. Glad we're helping to motivate you. That's what it's all about, eh?

Since this site doesn't allow us to upload pix to multiple albums (far as I can see) or do multiples in a single upload (not complaining), I put one pic in the tag swap gallery & 2 in the KIAE gallery. Pug took great shots of the tag I made!

My tag used the crayon resist in two ways. I did it with a stencil (http://duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=394) for the front of the tag. For the inside (http://duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=395), I used the 'swipe & wipe' technique.  Pug noted that there was a bit of sparkle on tbe santa & it did, indeed, result from using metalic/glitter crayons for some of the crayon work. Here's a close-up. (http://duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=396)

CBgirl - no worries.  You've been recovering from surgery.  I completely understand.

Melissa - glad your playing along even if you didn't swap this month.

LeighAnn - your tag is lovely.

Daniel - your tag is fabulous as always.

On the tag itself I used brick red and barn door distress inks then used a Tim Holtz embossing folder called bricks.  Then I colored over the top using a white Crayola crayon and then used brown distress ink and tried to buff the crayon off.

On the medium sized heart tag I stamped the heart using momento ink and then colored with the same white crayon.  I then inked the tag using barn door and walnut distress ink.  I then buffed the crayon to get the distress ink off.

On the small sentiment stamp I stamped again with momento ink and then colored in a back and forth motion over the words, and then inked again with barn door distress ink.

On the ticket I colored over the “Live” and the number and then inked with barn door distress ink.

Then I embellished the different tags with silver embellishment.

I am so glad you like it lovepug2.   Tag for August 2014 Tag Swap. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=414)

Great tag, Sadie.  I really like that you made 3 tags in one.

Lovepug2 your tag came in the mail today.  The crayon resist on the background worked so well, much better than mine did.  And I really like the flower stamps you used.  Did you notice we used similar sentiments and the Life's good on the tag you made is the same sentiment as the Life is Good on the one I sent you?  How neat is that?  Thank you for very much for the wonderful tag.

WTG, Pug! Aside from being a terrific tag, LeighAnn has reminded us that 'crayon (wax) resist works with a variety of media--inks, paints, chalks, pencils. Very cool!

I really like the simplicity of Pug's approach to her tag. I'd swear the embossed lattice was an applied diecut. Proof that resist can fool the eye. Her treatment of the flowers is wonderful. 'Course since I'm completely crazy, I'd have been tempted to 'piece' the flowers--folder-embossing the centers & stylus-embossing the petals.  ;)

A definite inspiration, LeighAnn!

Thanks Daniel! I've been giving my crayons a workout lately. They're so fun to try different techniques with. Plus with BTS sales going on its a good time to buy them  :D

I've got some thoughts going on for the next month tag swap! Should be real fun O0

Sarah, I tried to open the pics but they're only loading halfway. I think it's probably my internet. They look great so far! I will check back in a bit and see if I can get the pics to open.

Craft Nerd that is one butterfly great tag.  Both sides look wonderful.  I usually leave the back alone but no you had to set the bar higher by doing a lovely job on the front and back......now I am going to feel bad if I don't do something with the back side of the tags.   :tickedoff:

Sadie - sorry to create guilt for you.  I just don't like the back being plain because it shows.
