Title: Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge, 2020
Post by: djc on June 30, 2020, 08:49:33 AM
Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge – 2020

I hope you have gotten a head start on your holiday cards by participating in Cindi's Christmas All Year! Challenge.  This month, I'm taking over for Cindi by offering our yearly Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge.  I have not made one single Christmas card so far this year.  I hope you’ll join me for this month’s challenge and make lots of cards.  (I hope I make lots of cards!)

If you are in need of inspiration, check out Cindi’s past Christmas All Year threads; she posts an optional theme each month that you can use if it inspires you.  Also, check out the Creative Challenges that are being posted every Monday--lots of great ideas there for techniques.

The Challenge:
You have a full month--July 1 through July 31--to post your entries.  Please use the album set aside for Cindi’s Christmas All Year! Challenge, 2020, and link them to this Discussion Thread.  The challenge ends on July 31 at 11:59 pm your time.  If they are in the right album when I check the morning of August 1, they will count.

Remember you must enter only new cards--nothing you posted prior to July 1, the first day of the challenge.  If you have a special technique you'd like to use that does not include stamping, your card will still count.  It would be nice to combine stamping with other techniques, but sometimes that isn't feasible, and I want your cards to be something you will love.  So your paste-embossed, embroidered, stenciled, Iris folded, die-cut, etc. cards are welcome.

Requirements:
1. Complete the tasks as described in this challenge.

2. When you post your card in the gallery, please label it with the name of the appropriate holiday and add the words "in July." For example, Christmas in July, Hanukkah in July, Kwanzaa in July, etc.  I say that every year, but no one ever does it.  Sigh.

3. When you post your project in the gallery, please describe it. Tell how you made it and what you used.  Some information that you could share:
Stamps:
Cardstock/Papers:
Card Size:
Inks/Coloring Medium:
Accessories:
Technique:

Next, come back to this Discussion Thread to link your post here and to tell us how it went—tips to help us or advice so we can avoid or fix problems.

Prize:
There will be a prize awarded at the end of the challenge.  Your name will go into the hat once for every card you post in the gallery and link to the discussion thread. OK. I already know that the next question is do I get my name in the hat 10 times if I make 10 of the same card. I'll say you can get your name in the hat up to three times for multiples of the same design. Fair enough? There's no limit to the number of different cards you can post. You'll get credit for each different card.

I hope you'll join us and begin making your December holiday cards.  We can inspire and motivate each other.  Don't forget to have fun!

Daria

Thank you for hosting Daria!  I am 8 cards behind for the year, so including the 5 I would need for July, I guess my goal is 13 cards for July to catch up.

I had to count mine since Heidi mentioned how far behind she is, and I have 25 made so far, so not bad if I was doing 4 a month but I think I wanted to do 5 a month so that would leave me four behind so far, so I do have a bit of catching up to do :)

April, for the first time ever, I ran out of space to write my comment for your card in the gallery.  I had to go back and eliminate some of my message so I could sign my name!  I didn't even get to mention the rich colors you chose.  I love your card.  I just kept looking at it to see all the details.  Thank you for playing.  Daria

Yay!  I'm so glad you are hosting again!

I'm not even going to count ... I know I am way behind.  I can't even remember the last Christmas card I made.  This is the month!

I made three more cards! I am overwhelmed when it comes to making Christmas cards because I have so much stuff! So I look through my stash first to get inspiration. All of these cards were made from my stash.

April, your cards are wonderful.  The way you create your wreath is so effective and looks like a fun and easy way to make one--foolproof!

I'm glad you mentioned having bits and pieces in your stash that you are now using to make cards.  I'm always telling Nora that we should just get together with all our pieces and start creating cards!  I have so many backgrounds--some going back many years.  I have embossed images and die-cut images; I even have some cross-stitched images.  They all need to find a place on a card.

Maybe others can think about what they already have that will give them a head start on their Christmas cards this year.  I'm trying to figure out a way to use the little tags I cross-stitched.

Thanks for sharing all your cards.

I will have to look at what bits and pieces I have for Christmas cards.  I may have some appropriate backgrounds. I do have some stamped images from a couple months ago that I mean to color and die cut.  I definitely should see if I can finish that!

Wonderful cards, April.  I like using colored pencils.  It slows the process down and takes more time than markers or watercolor, but I find that it relaxes me more.  Right now, that's a very good thing.

Heidi, I'm sure you'll find ways to use what you have in your stash.

Anyone have a great layout for featuring small tags?  I cut the top off one of them so I'd just have a small rectangle.  That's as far as I've gotten.

April, you go, girl!  Nine cards already!  Can you send some of that energy over here?

Green rubber?  I have black rubber, gray rubber, turquoise rubber, but no green rubber.  That is a very nice candle image.  I love what you did with it.
I still haven't used the Gelli Plate my son bought me about three years ago.  I have made masks to use with it and bought some paints to use with it.  I even bought hand sanitizer to clean it, and that is almost gone now without ever having been used on the Gelli Plate.  I am happy to see that the Distress Oxide inks played well with it. Your penguin and hot chocolate image is so cute--love the sparkly marshmallows!

Thank you for posting.

I stamped this snowman for the last card, but he was too big.
Made him a new background with the new stencil (it’s dots but could be snow)
Cut him out and added words.
It a Judikins stamp.

I worked on this challange.  Background is an embossing folder that I glittered the raised letters.
Stamped a Michael Strong stamp, embossed, colored with  twinkling H2O‘s , then cut out and pop dotted with a small gold bow.  Matted with glitter gold cardstock.
You can’t get any glue to stick to the top of this cardstock.  So I cut the middle and glue my background straight to the card after I glue the gold glitter frame on.  But the frame is under ont on top..

Used Christmas words embossing folder, sanded it for a wolf brushed look.
Stamped, emb, colored, cut out Michael Strong snowman stamp.
Matted in glitter cardstock.  Used small strip for him to walk on.  And a die cut circle to make image larger and Focus .

Another folder, this one has Christmas bulbs.  Colored raised parts.
Stamped  embossed, cut out and pop dotted to front of background
Added words.

I made a slime line card.  I used my new Penny Back set I got for my birthday.  I wanted to use lots of them and that worked better in a slimline.  Used two pp.  cut circles out of the strip and turned it over to the white side
Less layers.  Stamped, embossed, colored with pencils, cut out, pop dotted onto circles.Added shiny ribbon and Nuevo drips and Crystal Accents.

Hi Daria!

I haven't even started this challenge yet, but tomorrow is the 25th, so I think I need to carve out some time!  Maybe even get a head start today.

Anyway, I have been following everyone else's Christmas cards and they are awesome!  I read your post that you are looking for ways to use your cross-stitched Christmas tags ... without seeing them, I found a layout that might work.  Ran across this video when I was surfing when I should have been crafting ;)

I think it's a cute layout.  I like the punched window, but in your case I think you could just lay your tag on top.  Or maybe you do want to frame it?  With the texture of the cross stitch, you may or may not want to use the little strip of embossed paper under the focal tag.

I think this could be a cute layout for any small Christmas image.  Take a look and see what you think.

Connie Stewart's video (https://youtu.be/Uhx_uDjj_vc?t=1571).  The card I'm referring to is the 3rd card in the video.  I think the way I'm linking it might start there?

I saw a similar heat embossed card someplace, although it wasn’t a Christmas card. I cannot find that card now to show you.  These were not difficult and I am happy how they turned out.  I really like this snowflake stamp.

Heidi, Nora, and Connie, you guys are the best.  I love your cards!

We still have a couple more days.  It doesn't look like I'm making any Christmas cards this month.  I did make a couple of birthday cards, and I need to make more for next month.  It looks like another year with me madly trying to make Christmas cards in November.  I hope not.  You've given me some good ideas and some to CASE.  Thank you.

Yes, Heidi, you have five so far this month!

Well I didn’t get much done today but I did lay out all the cards with the patterned paper I want for the backgrounds.  I think I will have time tomorrow to finish them.

Daria, even if you don’t finish them maybe you can get some next month.  The card set I posted really didn’t take long once I had them heat embossed.  I would be happy for you to CASE those, if you want!

I enjoy the extra push in July to get some done!  So thank you for hosting!

Four more done.  I used Michael Strong tree stamped and embossed.  I used emb folder on two and pp on the other and of course glitter cardstock.
The snowmen is a piece of pp, with die cut and punches.  I have been trying to figure out how I could use that piece for some time, and today it just went together.

Finally!  1 Christmas card finished!

Best Christmas Ever (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5109#top_display_media)

I used April's Creative Challenge technique of stamping and watercoloring.  I like it, but I don't think I could mass produce.  I used a pretty old stamp set that I haven't used very much, so I'm glad I was able to ink it up.  It had the solid stamp designs I needed.

Still holding on to hope that I will get a few more cards made this month ...

Thanks, Heidi!

Yankee, Nora, and Cindi, your cards are just wonderful.  I wish they were mine!  lol.

Cindi, congratulations on your first Christmas card this month!

This came together because I was playing with a die set.i cut the pieces out and put them together and liked it.
I had one more image that I had done for a different card and didn’t use.  Put together and die cut words that would fit twice and stacked.  It doesn’t have glitter cardstock, but a litter glitter shows in the cracks of the background.

I don’t think I will have time to  make more this month!

Yankee, you've done great this month!  Puts me to shame.
I'm so glad you were able to play.

Here are my 4 cards that are months in the making! I think I bought the little stocking embellishments in late winter, then I stamped the images in early April and finally finished them today!

Set of 4 since they weren’t exactly the same. http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5111#top_display_media

Yay! I am happy to have 9 done.

Heidi, no wonder it took you so long to make those cards!  All the details are wonderful.  These cards are going to bring cheer and warmth to someone's home for Christmas.

Well here are the last of my cards, I have had this page of Penny Black stickers for over a year now and have been moving them around trying not to let them get bent and I decided it was time to make them into cards so I can quite that.

Sorry I took the pictures individually for my blog and forgot to take them in groups for posting here, and yes I was too lazy to get them back out and take more pictures.

The last two seemed more like winter cards than Christmas but I tried to make them feel like Christmas

Connie, I started to comment on your cards this morning, and then I was distracted.  I'm just now getting back to finish looking at them.  That is a lovely set of stickers that you used, and you made some beautiful cards with them.

Today is the last day of the challenge.  There are still a few hours left.  I'll be back in the morning to double-check and count all the cards.  I think you guys have done a great job.

I forgot!  So sorry to be late today.

I have looked at all of your cards in the gallery once again and double-checked against the links you posted in this thread.  I believe I have found all of the cards!  You guys made sixty-four cards!

I wore out my hand writing your names again and again.  Congratulations on adding so many cards to your Christmas card stash this month.  Hmm.  If you sent all those cards to me, I'd be done with my Christmas cards for the year.  lol.  That's all right.  You gave me some great ideas.

My daughter did the honors this year.  It's so late, I didn't even have to wake her up this year to draw the names.

Are you ready for the name of the first winner?

This year because of the pandemic, I am staying in my house--no shopping and no standing in line at the post office to mail packages.  For this year's prize, I'd like to send you a gift certificate to the online retailer you like to use.  Is there something you've been wanting to buy?  Tell me where you'd like to use your prize and I will send you a gift certificate for that online store.  Please be sure that the store of your choice offers gift certificates.  I'll need your email address so they can send it to you.

Thank you to everyone who played this year.  I loved seeing your cards and getting ideas.

Cindi, I don't know how I missed the video link you provided.  I did see it today when I was looking through everyone's posts again.  I will watch that and get back to you.

Hugs to all,
Daria

Oh sorry it has been a very busy day, thanks so much, it felt so good to get so many done in July since my Autumn has so many birthday cards that need to get done :)  You are so sweet to offer a gift certificate, I have no idea if the stores I go to have them or not.

Congratulations Connie and Nora!  You are all winners for adding to your Christmas card stashes!

Ha!  And as I sit here typing, I realize it's the 3rd of August already and it's my turn again.  I'll post Christmas All Year, August in a few minutes.

Thanks Daria!  You are the hostess with the mostess!  Isaias changed my last minute card making plans :( I loved looking at what everyone else made.
