Title: Winter Holiday Cards in July, 2018
Post by: djc on June 30, 2018, 07:35:05 AM
She's baaaack . . .

Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge -- 2018

I hope you have gotten a head start on our holiday cards by participating in Cindi's Christmas All Year! Challenge.  This month, I'm taking over for Cindi by offering our yearly Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge.  Despite my best intentions, I have not made any Christmas cards this year.  In fact, I think I’ve only made half a dozen cards of any kind all year!  Thank goodness I have a stash of cards ready for mailing—but not Christmas cards.   Come join me for this month’s challenge and make lots of cards.

If you are in the need of inspiration, check out Cindi’s past Christmas All Year threads; she posts an optional theme each month that you can use if it inspires you.  Also, you can check out past Winter Holiday Cards In July in the gallery.  You'll find 2014-2016 in the Challenges Section and 2017-2018 in the Cards Section where you post your Christmas All Year cards.

The Challenge:
You have a full month--July 1 through July 31--to post your entries in the album set aside for this challenge in the gallery and link them to this Discussion Thread.  The challenge ends on July 31 at 11:59 pm your time.

Remember you must enter only new cards--nothing you posted prior to July 1, the first day of the challenge.  If you have a special technique you'd like to use that does not include stamping, your card will still count.  It would be nice to combine stamping with other techniques, but sometimes that isn't feasible, and I want your cards to be something you will love.  So your paste-embossed, embroidered, stenciled, Iris folded, die-cut, etc. cards are welcome.

Requirements:
1. Complete the tasks as described in this challenge.

2. When you post your card in the gallery, please label it with the name of the appropriate holiday and add the words "in July." For example, Christmas in July, Hanukkah in July, Kwanzaa in July, etc.

3. When you post your project in the gallery, describe it. Tell how you made it and what you used.  Thanks to Sadie, we have more space in which to describe our posted cards so don’t be stingy with your comments.   Some information that you could share:
Stamps:
Cardstock/Papers:
Card Size:
Inks/Coloring Medium:
Accessories:
Technique:

Next, come back to this Discussion Thread to link your post here and to tell us how it went—tips to help us or advice so we can avoid or fix problems.

Combining Challenges:
You can combine this challenge with another challenge as long as the host of the other challenge will also allow it.

Prize:
There will be a prize awarded at the end of the challenge.  Your name will go into the hat once for every card you post in the gallery and link to the discussion thread. OK. I already know that the next question is do I get my name in the hat 10 times if I make 10 of the same card. I'll say you can get your name in the hat up to three times for multiples of the same design. Fair enough? There's no limit to the number of different cards you can post. You'll get credit for each different card.

I hope you'll join us and begin making your December holiday cards.  We can inspire and motivate each other.  Don't forget to have fun!

Daria

I haven’t done too well on Christmas cards this year. I hope in July I will have the extra oomph to do so!

I likely will not make any this week, as we are doing a sort of “staycation.”  Hopefully will have a lot after that.

Thanks for hosting!  July really is sneaking up on me!

I'm glad I'm not alone.  I bought that cute MFT Santa's Elves set and hope to get started with that one.  A few days ago, I was at Nora's, and I stamped several images on kraft cardstock.   Now I just need to color them and turn them into cards.  Sounds like a nice simple way to ease into this.

Well, I colored one elf.  It's going into the garbage, but it did help me figure out what not to do.  Progress.

I almost always stamp out two of an image because I usually mess up one.

Yay!  I'm so glad you are doing this challenge again this year!  I need to get moving!  My sister is coming for the 4th of July and the week following.  Mom had her stamps out today,  looking at Christmas images.  We hope to work on our Christmas cards together.

I just finished coloring all six elf images.  It sure takes a long time to color with colored pencils.  I hope to finish the cards tomorrow.

Happy Independence Day!  I hope everyone enjoys the holiday.

I just posted my first Christmas cards of the year!  Let's see if I can remember how to link them to this post.  My Favorite Things Santa's Elves (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=4044#top_display_media)

I think I did it.  Yes.  It works.

I never seem to get tired of these elves so I hope to make more cards with them with different layouts.  I was a bit worried about ruining everything when I added the splatter.  I tried the Kemper Splatter Tool, and this time I used it correctly so I didn't splatter myself instead of the card, but the splatter was very uniform and very fine.  I wanted more variation so I tried the technique Stephanie Klauck used in the video I linked in the gallery post.  She put some acrylic paint on an acrylic block, mixed a spritz or two of water into the paint, and then used a stiff paint brush to flick it off onto the card.  It worked great for her, not so great for me; but I admit I didn't have a stiff paintbrush.  I ended up just dipping a paintbrush into the paint, sometimes watered down and sometimes full strength, and tapped my finger on the handle of the brush.  I did splatter more paint around that way, but my card was in a box so I didn't do too much damage.  I was happy with the way it turned out.

I am so happy to have my first six Christmas cards finished.

Your turn.
Daria

Hooray for you Daria, you're on a roll now!

Your cards are adorable and the splatter is just right!  (I think I might own one of those splatter tools ... I wonder where it is?, from my old tole painting days, ha!)

I ordered some Snow Tex.  It was sold out last year .  Maybe I'll give that a try this year.  I have an idea ... but that's about as far as I've got!

Daria, that is great that you got 6 cards done!  Isn’t that funny how many ways there are to splatter paint, and how we think some look good and some not!

Still working on ideas.

Nora, I love what you did with both cards.  I'm looking at that Cardinal image and trying to figure out what colors I could use (so I don't completely copy yours!).  You also made that second image shine.  I couldn't visualize how to work with that one, but you made it sing.  Thank you for playing.  Daria

I have posted another set of cards.  I am really happy to have made these cards.  I stamped the images long ago, but I was intimidated by those big elephants.  How do you color an elephant?  A couple of months ago, I started coloring one of them while visiting Nora.  A couple of days ago, I decided to tackle them again.  At first, I was very hesitant with all those grays, especially the darker ones.  As I progressed through the five images, my coloring became darker and darker.  I really like the last one. lol.

First Three--Aquamarine & Limepeel (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=4070#top_display_media)

Last two--Denim and Wild Lilac (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=4071#top_display_media)

I now have eleven Christmas cards!

TFL.

Hi Daria, hooray for you, 11 cards!  The elephants are really cute!  If you don't mind me picking a favorite ...
I like them all, but the far left one (darkest) in aquamarine and lime is my fave.  I'm sure I would have been intimidated by the large elephant area too!

Recently I've been coloring some Alibabette Coloring Cards (on sale at Joggles.com).  The first one I took on a trip with me and brought colored pencils.  They are pretty heavily textured.  It was an interesting look, but I ended up going over it with a Dove blender to spread some color in to the texture.  The paper is heavy enough that once I was home I tried watercolor pencils instead, and got a smoother look.

Looking for some Christmas mojo today!

Hi, Cindi.

I always try to pick a favorite when someone posts multiple cards.  That's part of the fun, and I think we notice more when we try to do that.  You picked my favorite one.  It was the last one I colored.  I was so afraid to use the darker grays for shading, but I've watched so many videos where the cardmaker uses even black to darken those shadows!  Bravery paid off.

I guess that is one of the perks of making multiple cards.  If you lined mine up with the elephants going from lightest to darkest, that would be the order I colored them.  lol.

I had planned to stamp on the smooth sides of the paper, but I messed up a couple of times.  I actually do like the cards that were colored on the textured side, but it was pure heaven blending the colors on the smooth side.  Our favorite one was colored on the smooth side.  I could use Zest It on the rough ones, but I think I'll just leave them alone.

I have been making cards all along in July for this challenge. I made some at the beginning of July when I stamped with my friends. I made some more the past few days after I finished with the SF challenges. I made 13 in all. Here are some individual cards and then I decided to make 2 group pictures so that the gallery would not be so crowded! LOL! I had fun making my cards. Not sure if I will get any more made, but we will see.

Wow!  I have been checking in, but I missed these yesterday.  Instead of making cards, I've been organizing embossing folders!  Even though they were mostly organized all ready, I have been working for several days to get the remaining ones indexed and out of their packaging.  All done now.  Well, I do plan to change the grouping.  I want to organize them by theme instead of by the manufacturer.  However, first I am going to get the dies into storage pockets.  I'm tired of digging through little drawers to look for the one I want.  Does anyone have a list of themes for dies and/or embossing folders?

April, these are wonderful!  Thirteen cards! And they are all beautiful and/or fun.  Thank you for playing.  Daria

I am making some progress. I sat down tonight to make a few backgrounds with stencils and texture paste that I hope end up looking like snow.

I had tried to make a card with a background technique and a Christmas word background stamp, and that looked awful!

So I am working just haven’t finished anything else yet.

Heidi, working is good.  That is progress.

I am now organizing dies.  They are on the kitchen table, and they are staying there until I am done.  It's amazing how much I get done as I just wander into the kitchen and get started on them.  I spent hours on them yesterday, but I ran out of supplies, and my back was complaining loudly.  Now, I have an excuse to take a break until I can get to Lowe's for more magnetic sheets.

Today, I'm going to visit Cheryl, another stamping buddy, and we're going to play with stencils and Distress Oxide inks.  We might even play with alcohol ink.  We hope to make some cool backgrounds.

Daria, I know yu and your friend had fun making backgrounds. Please show them in the gallery!

yes, I have my embossing folders in categories -- here are some.

animals
birthday
circles and dots
Fall
Christmas
flowers
swirls
frames
words
music
birds
insects
elements -- these are folders like gears, brick wall, rope backgrounds, etc.

These categories have really helped me to find things quickly!

April, thank you for your categories for embossing folders.  That's just what I need to get me started!

I wish I took photos of my friend's backgrounds.  She had such a blast!  She must have made five or six backgrounds just with the leaf stencil--all different, but mostly fall colors.  Then she used the bamboo stencil, and I had to write down the colors of ink she used because they were just perfect.  She ended up with a bunch of backgrounds.  I'm pretty sure she will soon be the owner of Distress Oxide inks.  I have 24 now, and I love their soft, matte finish.  I have a zillion backgrounds no one has seen yet because they aren't cards yet.  I would fill up the gallery if I started posting them.  lol.

Cheryl has mostly Stampin' Up supplies, but she does have a few regular Distress Ink pads.  I used her Dusty Concord to go along with my Distress Oxide Seedless Preserves and Wilted Violet.  The regular ink blended right in with the oxides.  It was as if it took on the properties of the oxide inks--no harsh lines, no streaks, just perfect.

One other thing I did just so I could show Cheryl was to use the ink that was on the stencil to make a second background by misting it with water.  They turned out beautifully, and I didn't even have watercolor paper with me so I used Neenah Classic Crest.  I liked one of those better than the original.

Heidi, I love your snowman cards!  Your snowmen are so darn cute!  I love the paste embossing in the background.  I think I'm going to have to get some of that metallic texture paste; it's beautiful.  Hmmm.  I think I have some Dreamweaver Metallic Embossing Paste.  I don't remember it looking like that though.  I'll have to give it a try.

Thanks, Daria. I purchased the Heidi Swapp paste at Tuesday Morning. They are in a tube like toothpaste so you can push out just a little to use, but can’t really put it back in!   I think it is still a good idea since the paste inside the tube, I hope, will stay fresher!  I got white (which I used in my cards), silver, gold and an aqua color.  They were either 1.99 or 2.49! I thought that was a fabulous price!

I have recently been doing a lot of stenciling with the Distress Oxide inks too!  I have some backgrounds that I was wondering if I could figure out how to use as a Christmas card.  They are with Blueprint sketch and Wilted violet.

I hope you will make some cards with your backgrounds, Daria, so we can see the lovely color combinations you are talking about. I haven’t mixed regular distress with distress oxide too much.

I wonder how many inkpads I have.  I just ordered 3 new ones.  Squeezed lemonade, shaded lilac and tattered rose. I might order one or two from the new release too, but I don’t order whole releases anymore. (My distress ink drawer is almost totally full!!)

Title: Re: Winter Holiday Cards in July, 2018
Post by: djc on July 24, 2018, 02:18:12 PM
I also am looking at the last 24 colors to see what I think I really "need".  After seeing how well the regular Dusty Concord blended with the oxide inks, I know I really don't need to get all the colors.  I already have a ton of ink pads.  I always wanted to have all the colors in a line--big mistake.  However, I do use pretty much all my Distress Inks.

I've never seen embossing paste in a tube!  I wouldn't worry about the longevity of paste in jars.  I've had my Dreamweaver's embossing pastes for years, and they're just fine.  Well, they were the last time I looked.  Also, if I mixed colors, I saved it in tiny little jars so maybe that's something you could do with the excess paste from the tubes.

Daria

ETA:  I just checked out the Heidi Swapp embossing pastes.  You did get a fantastic deal!

Three more cards that I made at a paper crafting group.  They are simple.  I had planned to heat emboss a layer of snow on the trees, but I didn’t know my way around the room to find an outlet for my heat gun and I also forgot my craft mat, etc.  So I do hope to try that sometime too.  Maybe even on plain green cardstock.

I think that is 7 for the month!  That is way more than any other month! Yay!

Daria, I looked up the Heidi Swapp paste and saw there is black metallic that I would like too!

Heidi, I love your cards!  That's a good card design for featuring patterned papers without overwhelming the images or the eye of the beholder.  lol.

Black metallic embossing paste.  Oh, my.  You are really making me want to drag out what I have.  I'm pretty sure I only have gold, silver, and copper metallic embossing paste and a pearlescent one in addition to the regular pastes--white, black, glossy, matte, translucent, and crackle.  OK.  I just checked.  I was surprised to see I have a couple of colors too.

Today, the stamp pockets I'm using for die storage arrived.  I will be so happy to have that task behind me.  I've been working on that instead of making masculine birthday cards I need like now and the Christmas cards I wanted to make a ton of this month.  Sigh.

Connie, I just saw your card in the gallery, and I love it.  It's so beautiful!  Yes, I know it's cute too, but the rich, warm colors and beautiful coloring were the first things that caught my attention.  Wonderful card!

I'm glad you got to play.  I started out great, and then I got distracted by the organization of embossing folder and dies, appointments, company, and some family things too.  I am glad I at least got my first Christmas cards of the year made.  It's a start.

Does anyone else want to play?  The challenge isn't over yet.  We still have three more days in July.  I'm going to visit my son for his birthday tomorrow.  Yes, I finally finished his card this morning!  When I get home, I'll check in and see if anyone else had time to make a Christmas card.

Thank you all for playing along this year.  I loved seeing all your cards in the gallery.  Only five of us played, but we made thirty-three cards!

No hat this year.  I just checked my stash, and I have items for all four of you.  Not all of them have to do with Christmas, but they are all new and, I think, pretty nice.  Three of them are either accidental duplicates or something I intentionally duplicated so I'd have them for RAKs, and I have a different Santa's Elves set that I have been using so I don't really need another one.

Please choose what you would like to have, and let me know:

Hi Daria, I do think for a small group we made a lot of cards this July!  Thank you for hosting, I always look forward to it.

That is nice of you to offer everyone something.  I would LOVE the Elizabeth Crafts Cardinal!!!  It is retired and I couldn’t find it anywhere when I was looking for it.

Thank again!

That's great, Heidi.  It's yours.  I made sure I had one for myself before offering it since it's no longer available.  I always seem to want something that I can no longer get.  lol.

Have you changed your address in the last year or two?

that is too sweet of you Daria, I feel bad since I only managed one this month, but I do love flowers so the spellbinder stamp would be lovely :)

Nora is traveling.  She emailed me that she'd take whatever is left over.

Thanks so much, Daria! I will take the boat yard stamp. That was a lot of cards for just 5 of us! Heidi, I am so glad that you got the cardinal stamp. I know you have been wanting it.

April

Great, April.  I will send that one to you.

That leaves Nora with Santa's Elves stamps and die.  I'll let her know.

Connie, I don't have your address.  April and Heidi, if you've moved since you last received something from me, please let me know.

Thank you to all of you for participating.

I'm so sorry I didn't get to make any Christmas cards in July!  July was a stressful month for my family (Dad).  I'm naming August "transition month".  It's got to be better than July!

BUT,  I thoroughly enjoyed catching up on the posts and gallery this afternoon.  Lots of inspiration!

At the beginning of the month I shared that I ordered Snow Tex from Amazon.  Ugh, it arrived in a plastic bag, tied in a knot, then in a box.  I truly think UPS threw the box at my front door, because I happened to be standing near by, and heard it hit.  I guess that saves a step, if you don't need to knock or ring a bell.  Anyway, I threw it out.  The jar had leaked all over the inside of the bag.  It was such a painty mess I couldn't even read the label of the jar.  Amazon refunded my money.  If I decide to try again, I might look for it locally ... it looked like such a mess though that I think I will look for something in my stash if I want "snow".

I need to take a look at my embossing pastes!  I probably have something suitable ... although now Heidi has me wanting to run to Tuesday Morning.

Thanks for hosting Daria!  Congratulations to all of you who made cards.  And you're all winners!  How wonderful!

I'll post something for "Christmas All Year - August" soon.

Not to worry, Cindi.  You accomplished a great deal on the home front!  You'll notice that, after my great beginning, I didn't make any more Christmas cards.  However, I'm very happy with what I am accomplishing with my project to organize embossing folders and dies.  Doing that and seeing all the Christmas cards posted this month have put me in the mood to craft.  It's all good.
