Title: Winterfest Chat
Post by: Far North on February 03, 2018, 08:23:30 AM
Good Morning!  Oh it looks like we have a fun line-up of challenges this week!  And here it looks like we will have have some snowy cold days once again this week....what a great excuse for staying inside to stamp #>

I need to look through my supplies to get my brain wrapped with ideas of what I might want to create. How about you...do you know where you want to start?

Happy stamping everyone!...Jan

I'm getting ready to head out to a movie with a friend, but once I get back, I'm going to start with finishing the examples for my challenge.  Then I'll watch the tutorials and figure out what I'm going to start with.

I have my challenge posted now. I was vacillating between two ideas. I ended up doing a sketch challenge, which I think I might have done last time, but this was something that I have a sample ready for, so I am hoping that is okay with everyone!

I’m not sure what I will work on first!  I need to think about it!

April posted yesterday that only two people are signed up for Bingo. I wondered if more people wanted to send their words in!!!???

Happy Winterfest!

All of these challenges look fun! I think I will start on the twist pop up card. Yes, Heidi, we have 4 Bingo players now - yeah! I am ready to go!

I just watched the Wooden technique video.  I started just before the spot April suggested and then sped up the video.  It's a pretty technique.
I might make a few wood backgrounds before I have to head out.

I'm going to a local art supply store (I worked there years ago) for a Golden demo of their different mediums.  It is in conjunction with Martin County Rocks (people painting on rocks and hiding them for others to pick up and re-hide, you can check out their FB page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/681318192041905/?multi_permalinks=922210887952633&notif_id=1517606825891152&notif_t=group_activity&ref=notif) if interested).  I figured it would be handy information, no matter what surface I'm working on.  I'll let you know how it goes!

Hmm, where to start?  Should I prep a few wood backgrounds or make a twist card sample?

Canadian, eh, emailed me to let me know that she cannot see this forum.  So I sent Sadie a PM to ask her if the restrictions are still on for the forum.  Not sure how long that will take, but wanted to let you all know!

That appears to be the case.

I did a test to see how hard it would be to move our challenges to a board where all stampers can see them ...
It is easy.  I tested by moving mine to the Winterfest Discussion thread because it's open to all stampers.  The only drawback was that then I did not have permission to delete it!  Uh oh!  So I deleted the body of my test post and tried to explain why it was there.

What do you think?  Should we move our challenges?  Wait till tomorrow?  I'm worried that maybe Sadie won't see it until Monday.

One drawback is that it's easy to move the initial challenge, but replies won't get moved ...

It’s not a bad idea. I could always copy and paste the replies to a document first.

What are you working on today?

Anyone stamping while watching the Super Bowl tonight?
My neighbors are having a get together.  They are projecting the game outside on the side of the house (unless it rains) I hope to go just for a bit at the beginning and then sneak back home to stamp in front of the TV in blissful solitude!  (is that bad?) .  DH is out of town so I don't have to accompany him ...

LOL Cindi! Only thing i like about football is the food--tailgate or inside party 🍻🍺🍗🍕🍔
Have fun!
I did one challenge so far.
Chance of rain ruining their party doesn't appear too high.
Our side of the state likely to get any precip first & later tonight ☔⛅

Well, DS didn’t get to go skiing because it is raining instead of snowing here.  We are going to go to a Super Bowl party probably just for the first half. I am making cupcakes with icing grass and chocolate footballs.  Also deviled eggs with chive laces to look like footballs and then pizza sliders.

I haven’t worked on anything yet. I wanted to start with Sarahs challenge, but I haven’t decided on a stamp yet.  I hope to at least start a project before the Super bowl!

I see at least a couple completed projects in the gallery!  Good for you guys! I need to go check them out.

Last night they were predicting rain for game time.  I think that’s changed.  It’s breezy and clearing up. Maybe it blew through already?

Aww!  With all the cold weather you’ve had Heidi, it’s a shame it had to rain on DS’s ski weekend!  DH is skiing in Utah.  He says the skiing isn’t great, but still having fun.  I think it’s not very cold there either.

No wonder you haven’t done any stamping yet!  You’re making crafty food!  Sounds delicious!

Sorry your son didn't get to ski, Heidi. We woke up to ice all over trees, but the roads were fine. We had a cold rain until about noon.

Hubby has to have pizza for the game so he will going to pick one up son. We had better get it early so there won't be a wait! I might watch some of it, but hope to work on a card or 2 for the challenges. Oh, and post bingo words!

Heidi so sad your son couldn't go skiing, we actually got 1/4 inch of snow today here.
I am getting ready to watch This is Us, does anyone else here watch that show?

I don't watch it, but I have heard about it that show, Connie. I watched snatches of the super bowl game last night. Hubby was sad the Patriots lost. I was rooting for the Eagles!

I have done 2 WF challenges and looking forward in doing some more today. I need to look at Connie's video for her challenge. It looks pretty!

Tonight is my stamp club, so I also need to pack supplies for that. We are going to make a small box to hold candy for Valentine's Day.

Good for you April (rooting for the Eagles).
I'm not into football, but as PA native I felt duty bound to back the team--even though the usually screw up when they're ahead.
This time they didn't choke!

Mmm, Cheese steaks "wit" sounds good!  Congrats to the Eagles and their fans!

I said I would get back to you  about the Golden Mediums demo ...
Well, it took quite a bit of time for the amount of info.  I was the only one who showed up, so we waited.  One more showed up 1/2 hour late, and she was in to talking politics, so it took longer than it should have.  We filled squares on a pre-printed swatch and spread and mixed them with paints using a palate knife.  That way we got a "feel" for them.  "Samples" were advertised, but none delivered except for the swatch sheet we brought home.  I did get some good info and a lesson on acrylics from the knowledgeable Golden sales rep. so that was worthwhile.

Oh yeah, one tip I got from him was that Golden High Flow paint (https://www.goldenpaints.com/products/colors/high-flow) is a good substitute for ink.  He said because it is a paint and not an acrylic ink, it has better lightfastness.  Maybe not as important in a greeting card, but if you want your artwork to last, it's important.  He also said artwork needs to be varnished or sealed.  I wish I asked more about that ... but he shared that Golden gets lots of phone calls.  One artist wrapped his artwork in bubble wrap for mailing and when the recipient received it, it had an impression of bubble wrap on it!   :o  He also said acrylic paint is porous so that is another reason for varnishing.  The other person at the demo teaches drawing and painting and she said she wraps with glassine, and that works well.  (Just in case one of us is the next big acrylic artist! ) She also said the Golden website is a wonderful resource, so you might check that for questions about paints and mediums.  I did ask about how the mediums will dry in FL (or sub. your high humidity location).  He said they WILL dry hard.  I've had mod podge, and kid crafts (Crayola model magic - that's kind of marshmallow-y) get sticky.  Most of my swatch sheet did dry, though it took a good day or more for some of it.  The molding paste is still not hard.  It's applied thicker than I would use through a stencil, so that could be why it's taking longer ... I will keep an eye on that.

You'll see where I got distracted and put paint where the medium was supposed to go on the green/light molding paste.   ::)
ETA : I should have waited till my swatch sheet was dry before I photographed.  Please see the short video I linked in the next post.
Title: Re: Winterfest Chat
Post by: Iring on February 05, 2018, 10:46:32 AM
Oops!  I should mention (either the photo is not so good, or I took the pic before things dried) ...
The polymer medium (used to be called gloss medium, or gloss gel) dries clear.  The matte gels dry frosty looking.  The pastes dry white.  The glass bead gel dried clear.  The top row is medium alone.  The bottom row is mixed with paint (to show how much pigment is in Golden paint, they don't lose much intensity).  He said the glass beads show up better when mixed with lighter color paints.  We mixed ours with iridescent pearl paint.  Gels are transparent, pastes are opaque.  So maybe I did get quite a bit of info!  Feel free to ask any questions about the swatch.

I'm hoping maybe I can use some of this info to help me with Jan's Art4U challenge.  I have a few mediums that I've bought with 50 off coupons, or from my days at the store with an employee discount (I didn't net a lot of money there, ha!)

I found a video, under "Resources" on Golden's website that shows the exact swatch sheet we made.  The review of mediums starts at 1:40 minutes but I think it's worth watching the whole video, about 5 min. long.

Cindi, the Golden guy was lucky you showed up, because you shared that info with all of us!  Would you use the glass bead medium with a stencil on a card, or would that not work. I think that glass bead medium is very pretty.

I need to catch up on Connie’s challenge AND then print out the cheat sheet so I can start planning ideas.

I shared on the regular craft thread that I am doing some cleaning first today.  Just taking a short break right now.

Right?  I hope he doesn't think he wasted his time.

I'm not sure about glass beads through a stencil. Great idea!  I'm afraid it might sneak under the stencil ... but maybe if we use a stencil adhesive?  I'll have to give it a try.  There's a cool video for that too, on the Golden site.

I have used glas bead with a stencil, but not good results.  It skips at the edges no matter what you try.
So if the stencil is less defined works better.  My favorite is to smear it on for a snow bank.

I used the glass bead medium through a stencil on this card below. It did well for me. Yes, a more open
stencil works much better.

I remember that card now, April! I wonder if subconsciously, that is where my idea came from. I bet it did!  Did you use just the gel medium, not mixed with anything else? Thanks!!!

I've used the glass bead medium with a stencil on canvases.  And I've mixed it with Pearl Ex powders.

I have yet to start any challenges.  I made the mistake of sitting on the couch yesterday and ended up with a puppy in my lap.  I watched the puppy bowl instead of the super bowl.

Good to see you, Kathy!

I feel like the cards are stacked against me.  Yesterday I had to finish a design team card that was half done so it is ready to get posted by tomorrow morning.  I have the dentist this morning and then babysitting in the afternoon.  Still hoping to get some time in today!

I have posted the Bingo Twist challenge and everyone is invited to join in! Heidi, I hope you can find a little time to work on WF today. It worked out well for me because hubby went hunting in Alabama this week and I have the house to myself!

I had fun at my stamp meeting last night. The little box we made was so cute. It holds one piece of candy, but you can make it larger to hold more.

Have a good day everyone!

Welcome back Kathy!

Quote
babysitting in the afternoon
Get that kid to take a nap!  When my first daughter was an infant, I would have all my tole painting out and ready to go.  I put signs on the door, took the phone off the hook and pretty much threatened anyone who might wake her up, or cause the dog to bark!

April, thanks for opening up the Bingo Twist!  There are certainly lots of options on your list  :smitten:

I went to "Stamp Therapy" this morning.  They don't use strictly Stampin Up so they don't call it Stamp Camp.  We made a birthday card, a wedding/Valentine card (could go either way) and a Valentine box.  The box was one of SU's pizza style boxes.  It was a nice heavy box with a shiny, food proof inside.  We decorated with paper, a belly band, satin ribbon and tinsel ribbon.  It fit about 6 or 8 small wrapped chocolate bars or kisses, or 1 chocolate covered pretzel.

Yesterday it took me all day to fuss around with a card for CraftNerd's challenge.  To look at my finished card, and now to replicate it looks like it could be made in 10 minutes!  I wanted to heat emboss on chalkboard paper.  The paper comes in a 6x6 pad and has a little bit of a gritty texture.  I thought it would be perfect for chalk pencils, or even painted with distress oxide.  I was trying to color in the image, but everything just rubbed off.  Then the embossing started flaking off!  Ugh!  I finally gave up and went to heavy black cardstock.

I hope everyone gets some play time today!

OH, Cindi, I really did try to get her to nap!  She is 3 and was having no part in it.  Her mom told me to try a nap, and then when her dad picked her up, I asked how often she naps now and he said about 30% of the time.  If I had known that I would have given up on the nap sooner!  Lol.

I did get working on some of Aprils wooden backgrounds tonight.  I asked DH what it looked like and his first answer was “wood,” but he quickly added, “maybe cornstalks” to cover more bases! Lol.  I also started working in Sarah’s challenge.  It is harder than I thought!!

Cindi, your stamp therapy sounds fun!

April, will you be handing the candy out at the nursing home?

Title: Re: Winterfest Chat

It is a very rainy day here today. I hope to work on the sketch challenge today.

Heidi, I remember nap time with my boys. I had one who fell asleep at the drop of a hat and slept over an hour and the other one slept about 1/2 hr. or less and really didn't sleep at all.

No, I won't be giving the candy from this project to the nursing home. The box takes awhile to make. Making 20 would take forever. I might have something I could cut out on my machine, though.

Hope you all have a good day!

April

Today was another busy day.  However, I nearly have two cards done for Sarah’s challenge, so that is good.  And I colored am image to go with a wooden background.  So still no finished projects, but I do have progress!

The weather here was awful.  Snow, freezing rain, sleet and then tons of rain.  You can’t go outside without getting your feet wet. I need some of those duck boots!

My craft area is a disaster, I may need to clean it up before trying anything else.

I've heard from family & friends in Berwick that they had about 4 inches of snow before it changed to rain.
Greatest concern is turning to ice overnight.
Morning commute is concern

We had a little sleet and snow but they pretreated the roads so well that the commute ended up doing ok.  I can't get over how many pile ups around the country there have been, I so hate traveling this time of year.  Hubby surprised me with a trip we will take the weekend after Valentines day but at least we are going south, hopefully we won't run into any trouble

It is sunny and cooler here today. About what it should be this time of year here. Not looking foward to all the rain they are forecasting for the weekend. Tonight I am going out to eat at a steak house with my Sunday School class.

I made 2 cards yesterday to show my stamp club in March how to make. I will be posting it on the use it or loose it challenge since it has seguins on it.

Have a good day everyone!

We have running around to do today also and then this evening and all day tomorrow I will be at the IF gathering at church, when I said this was an ok week I had forgot I signed up to go, but I will have some time on Sunday to try and finish up the two challenges I have remaining for the fest :)

Today, I went to the grocery store and I still need to get to the Post Office.  I have 4 challenges left, and only two completed.  I need to get Connie’s challenge finished today. I might be able to work on one tomorrow, but I am having a small dinner party in the evening, so the rest will need to wait till Sunday! I don’t like last minute!  Yikes!

I hope everyone is having a good Winterfest.  Yesterday, all day was coverage of the Super Bowl parade (I know several people who went and froze all day) and tonight is the Olympics opening ceremony! (Although I guess it must have already happened!)

It is a beautiful sunny day today and 60! I plan to walk in a bit. Hubby and I just cleaned out half the attic and hubby hauled off a bunch of trash and will be taking some stuff to goodwill. Glad to fet some of that done!

The meal was delicious at the steak house we went to last night. I have heard about this place for years and have never gone. I had beef tips, rice pilaf and fried okra.

I have finished all the WF challenges. It helped that hubby was gone. Now I hope to work on the Christmas all year challenge soon.

Have a good day!

I finished the last of my 3 cards for CraftNerd's More with Less Challenge.  Yippee!
I used a tiny bit of my Wooden background to cut a pole.  I still need to make a card or something using a larger portion of "wood".

We went out for pizza tonight and then stopped by the county fair just for a bit, since it was free admission for opening night.  We mostly wanted to walk through the 4H animals.  I also like looking at the school kids' artwork.  We don't have much in the way of adult arts and crafts.  There were some crocheted and knitted items and amigurumi  critters, a few quilts, a cross-stitch piece ... it's a pretty small fair.  Oh and I saw maybe 3 jars of pickles and 3 jellies or jams, ha!  Kind of pitiful.  I grew up about 15 minutes from the NY State Fair which was much larger with more competition in the cooking/baking, fine arts, crafts etc.  Ooh, one neat thing one of the schools did : they made some sort of paper mache (I'm guessing) alligator and it was covered with individual pine cone petals for the scales!  They had a figure of a boy sitting on it leaning over looking at something with a magnifying glass, and there was a turtle in the scene who's shell was a soccer ball cut in half!  Very clever.  They asked people to vote for their favorite, and that was mine.  I think the school might win a little bit of money.

i found a good way to do reverse stamping today while trying to refresh my memory in order to make my last WF18 MWL card.  i think maybe I'll put it in the technique section of the forum.

Yesterday afternooon, Jan emailed me to say she was locked out of the forum and the password recovery wasn’t working.  I PMed Sadie to see if she could help, but at this time, I think Jan won’t be able to post her projects.

Cindi, the fair sounds like it was a fun diversion.  Is it typical to have them in winter?  I wonder if some people are too busy this time of year to make stuff for it?

Yankee, glad you had some good family time!

April, your steak dinner sounds good.

I got some nice new stamps at the Post office yesterday.  I got some sharks, and a sheet of 4 different pretty bouquets.  I cut some lilac branches and brought them in to see if I can force them.  I had limited success last year.  I wish I had som access to forsythia, because that is probably easier to force.

Looks like Jan is back, hooray!

Good luck with your lilacs, Heidi.  Where I went to college (Rochester, NY) they had a lilac festival in May.  It was beautiful, but unfortunately most of the students had left by then.  I was lucky to see it one year.

Yes, our fair is always in February.  It would be unbearably hot in the summer.  We talked to a man demonstrating wood turned bowls last night who said there is stiff competition to get in to the FL fairs in the winter.

Happy weekend!

I am back from the If Gathering, it was a great two days with the ladies but it is amazing how tired you can get by sitting and listening to speakers and then just sitting around talking.  I got home so late last night that I never touched my computer but tonight I am trying to play catch up, on emails and here. Tomorrow afternoon I will get working on my projects can't wait to get to them.
Glad Jan was able to get back in.  Hope you had a nice dinner Heidi, I don't care for last minute like that either.  Shiela I am glad to hear you had a good visit with your Son and daughter, those are precious times I know.
Cindi, that is so smart that they have the fair when it is cooler, I know some of them can get pretty hot up here so I imagine down there it would be unbearable.   We have gone to a few small town ones that were barely anything ourselves.
April, it is always fun to try out a new restaurant and even better if the food is really good. Bet it did feel good to clean out the attic, there are a few things I would love to clean out but hubby just doesn't have the ambition.

Watched some different u tubes on same card, I think I found out what I did wrong.
But don’t know if I will get it done in time?
I am terrible on measuring and cutting perfectly.  I do better guessing or eyeing the cuts.
But on these kind of cards can’t do that!
I did the color explosion and stencil paste last night so they could dry overnight
Just finished them up, now on to the last one!

I finally got a chance to work on some Winterfest pieces today.  That was after I took the dogs on a hike with my friend from work and her dog.  We went to the black bear wilderness area and did about a 2 mile hike.  I glad we went early before it got hot out.  It got into the mid 80s today.  Winter is over.  Puppies spent most of the day sleeping.

I managed to get pieces finished for all but 2 of the challenges.  Now I need edit my photos and post them.

I’ve seen to many great projects in the gallery this fest.  I had a lot of fun.  Didn’t get the Bingo twist done, but pretty much did everything else, even if I did make a mistake in Jan’s challenge.

Just wanted to say, don’t forget that there is the Christmas All Year challenge and Use It or Lose It challenge in the regular challenge area.  And anyone can start a new challenge at any time!

I have been dragging today!  It has been rainy and overcast, but warmer.

I thought it was funny that I still didn’t get 10 words in Bingo! Congrats to Sarah on that!

Finally got all cards done!!!  But you should see my dinning room, so cluttered that I had to eat dinner standing in the kitchen.  What a mess!  I am too tired to clean up.
I plan to use the blue color explosion on a Christmas card as a night sky.  But not right away.
I have ten ATC to make for a local group, due thurs. I have the idea which is half the battle.
I need to take my cards for the local group over tomorrow, but they are done.  BUSY week.

You do have a busy week Sheila!

I have the idea which is half the battle.
You got that right!

I had to go to plan B with my Bingo Twist chalkboard piece.  I fought and fought with a word block stamp and could not get a clean stamp and embossing.  I tried Versamark with white EP and white ink with clear EP ... finally gave up and went in a different direction!

I feel your pain Heidi (stamping words) on ART4U piece!  I stamped one too many images on a piece I was making for CraftNerds More with Less challenge  :-\

I finally finished all of the challenges.  I spent all afternoon and evening playing with alcohol inks for my ART4U.  I need more practice!

Yep!  Dinner was a challenge tonight.  Hardly a clear counter to put a plate on in order to fill it.  Luckily DH was very patient.  I'm pooped too.  Will probably leave most of the clean up for tomorrow.  Crafting is hard work, haha!

DH left a tissue in his sweatshirt pocket from his ski week ... guess what went through the wash with the darks?  Ugh!!  I'm hoping most of it comes off in the dryer.  An extra rinse cycle in the washer didn't touch it.

This was a fun week!  The gallery is amazing!  Heidi, thanks for reminding everyone we have ongoing challenges.  Don't put all your toys away  ;)

I actually managed to get all the challenges done, it helped that our church was cancelled today due to icy conditions.  I guess our parking lot at the church was a sheet of ice. There was icy patches on our road and the driveway and sidewalks were all ice but it all melted by noon.

Yes, the gallery is full of great art work! Today is cloudy and warm. Tomorrow the temps are supposed to drop about 20 degrees! Then we go back up again.

I am having 2 stampers come over tomorrow to stamp so I need to clean up my craft room just to get it messy again! LOL! ::) I have one more card to make for the Christmas challenge, so hope to get that done today and then clean up. I need to clean some of the house too and make soup and salad for the ladies tomorrow. I have a busy day!

Also our son from Charleston will be here on business tomorrow, so we will take him out for an early supper so that he can get home at a decent hour. Looking forward in seeing him.

It has been a fun fest! I enjoyed all the challenges. I hate to see it go, but the next one will be here before we know it.

April
