Hooray for Winterfest 2015! My challenge is to create a project using watercoloring and dry embossing. Here is a quick tutorial on ways to achieve this look:
Watercoloring and Dry Embossing (http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/distresswatercolordryembossing/)
Rules:
1) Read the tutorial and create a new project using this technique.
2) Share a photo of your project in the Artsy Inkers gallery. Please leave a comment in this thread with a link to your gallery post.
3) There will be a RAK from my stash to a random participant.
4) You may combine this challenge.
Please post any questions to this thread O0

I love watercoloring. I'm so excited for your challenge! Thanks for hosting O0
-
I like your challenge, pal! May take me a bit to figure out how I'll tackle it, but hope to play!
-
Ooooh. I can't wait to give this a try. It looks like so much fun.
-
This will be fun. I think I might have a couple of embossing folders that might work.

I just thought of an embossing folder I have that I think will work well, but also some of the plain geometric patterns might work too. Thanks for hosting!
-
Oooo! This sounds fun! I have never heard of microglaze until I read the tutorial. April is there another product that can be used instead or does that part matter to the project or you challenge?
-
I don't have any microglaze either. I'm more interested in the watercoloring with dry embossing part of the challenge. Just use supplies you have on hand and have fun! O0
-
LoL this ended up being a real messy for me the 1st time I tried. I know a little more about watercolor so I hope to be a little more successful the 2nd time around. Thanks April for the nudge to try again!...Jan
-
Looks like fun, thanks for sharing the tutorial.
I actually have some microglaze ... if I can find it, I will use it!
-
I played with this challenge today. It was kind of messy for me too. I have a hard time getting the versamark/EP only on the raised areas, even when I use a brayer. I think the embossing folder you choose can make a difference.
I did end up with a few usable pieces ... I'll try to finish them in to a card or something tomorrow. Thanks for the challenge!
-
I have a versamarker and was thinking of using it instead of the brayer and inkpad.
-
I played with this technique last night. I didn't get the result but I will still use the pieces I made and will share them when I get them finished.
My first one, I used the ranger big emboss pad that has a light blue tint to it. I usually don't have a problem with it drying blue but on this piece it did.
I did another piece with the same EF but used my versamarker pad. Some of the ink didn't transfer too well so it's a little distressed looking in places. Overall both pieces I like them and both are useable but won't qualify for this challenge.
I'm going to try it again today. I have a distress ink embossing pad that is more juicer than my versamark so I'm going to see if that works better.
Heidi, I think the versamarker would work well too especially if you're EF has fine lines to it.
-
Well here is my try for this challenge. I realized that I had no embossing folders appropriate for this challenge at all. The one I used is the best I could do for this technique. I really like that flower one the lady used in the tutorial but I probably would never buy it because it really isn't my style of embossing folder. I usually purchase embossing folders that I use for backgrounds not to color the picture it makes. Anyway thank you for hosting this challenge, it was fun.

I need a second opinion. I colored one of the pieces I embossed and I'm trying to decide if I should leave it as is or if I should color the area between the flowers with green. Part of me doesn't want to mess with it because I love how it came out and part of me thinks the white outlining the flowers would show up better if I added the green. What do you guys think?
-
I think you could leave it as is and maybe mount it onto green cardstock, that might be nice
Or if you have tumbled glass distress ink you could lightly paint I'm the areas with that. I find that color to be forgiving and easiest to fix if I mess up!
Your coloring is absolutely fabulous though. Love the color combo and blending you got!

I really like the way it is. I think it looks bright and airy and if you painted inbetween the flowers it will darken it up and it won't be so bright and airy.
-
Oh that's a hard one Sarah....I love the colors and the white is great!
If it was a large EF , the 5x7 kind, I'd say to cut it I. The middle and do one green and leave one.
Now I do agree that I think the green will help outline the white flower lines...and that could be striking....Hhhmm...I think I am convincing myself to tell you to paint it green. Plus it looks like you were able to get a really good heat embossing so the green will be controlled possibly.
Ps: how did you get such a good heat embossing? My two got EP in places not embossed and the didn't embossed areas that were raised! And I used a brayer... ???
-
I would leave it alone because it is lovely to have the analogous colors.
-
Sarah, I would leave it. It looks fabulous!! O0
-
Thanks everyone. It is only 5.5 x 4. Maybe I'll make another one and do the green on that one.
Melissa - I went over it a couple of times with the brayer before adding the EP. and there were a few spots that I had to clean off and there are some spots that aren't embossed. Which would probably show more if I added the green.
-
I hope it is okay, I tried this technique on regular card stock (it works!) and used a geometric tile embossing folder instead of a picture. I think it turned out well. I want to try this again!

Plus, I cut my background in half so I can use it on two cards :)
-
Heidi, that is gorgeous!! :smitten:
-
Oh boy Sarah ... I don't know what to tell you. It looks so neat and clean the way it is. Your water coloring of the flowers is so pretty. Since you did so well staying in the lines with the flowers, you'd probably be safe coloring between them ... maybe if you went with something really light so mistakes wouldn't show? Hmmm, then again. It looks wonderful as is!
-
Sarah, this is beautiful! I would keep it as it is. Mine has turned out a little weird but I think I can use it.

Here is my entry. This was the best embossing folder I had. I think it did okay. I made a pocket by cutting around the embossing folder piece. You lift up the top butterfly and pull out a tag.

April, this link is to show the three pieces I made---b/c I wanted to show how different they all look.
But I am going to go load up my final project and link it here.
examples of 3 watercolor embossing (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1113&message_id=5ef94f01582053eee40b5edc8446a7aa&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Ok here is my final project I made using the top example:
watercolor flowers (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1114&message_id=cff0afccae90805b9978cc847360ec9b&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)
I'm kinda stuck though if I should add anymore to it. I like how Ann added bling to this folder in her challenge, but I don't really want to cover up the watercoloring. I could figure out where to put my white bow I made, so left it out.
What do y'all think? You think I need any embellsihments since its such a busy EF?
Thank you April for a fun challenge! That was neat--though I had trouble getting my EP to behave---but that seems to be my theme this festival with all the trouble I keep having with EP.
-
I made 3 cards also (2 are identical). I had a hard time getting the versamark to stay on top of the embossing :( I seemed to have the best luck with this smaller folder.
3 cups of tea (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=23&pid=1118#top_display_media)
Here is a closer view of one of the cards.
You're my cup of tea (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=1119#top_display_media)
Thanks for the challenge April! I have one more watercolored and embossed piece but not sure if I'll get it in to a finished project.
-
Those cards are so fun, Cindi!
-
Just getting ready to tackle your challenge, pal. I have not viewed anyone else's @ this point, but will do so & praise once I've done mine.
This is an interesting technique & I'm looking to go 'cloisonne' with it. ;)
-
I finally finished the card with the flower piece. I took you guy's advice, and didn't color the background. Flower Card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1162&message_id=3e711d9d11d9f8f4b28ade76c06ad86a&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)
-
Sarah, it looks so pretty like that. I love those colors together.
I am struggling with this one. I've been determined to use this embossing folder that has bold lines but I can't get a good emboss on it.
I'm going to try some differnt ones today.
-
I finished another card.
Tree card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1179&message_id=7f010248bb2e82ac32057d45b117cd1e&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)
I've got one more piece that I colored last weekend that I need to turn into a card, but I'm not sure what I want to do with it.
I really love this technique. I found coloring the pieces very relaxing.
-
Here is my card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=1187#top_display_media) for this challenge. This is the first I had time to use this die and embossing folder...but I think I should have found an embossing folder with larger indentions so the effect of the colors blending could be enjoyed more.
Thanks for the fun challenge April!
-
Here is the last one I finished. I really love this technique.

Thank you April for hosting a fun challenge!!
-
Wow, thanks so much.
This was a great challenge. Thanks for hosting.
-
Congrats, Heidi!
Great challenge, April!
-
Congrats, Heidi!!!
-
Congratulations Heidi!
Thanks for the challenge April!
-
April, I was so looking forward to doing this challenge - the Splitcoast tutorial results looked great!
When I sat down to do it, though, I couldn't find, or didn't have, half the stuff I needed. Whoops. I went ahead anyway, and improvised, and it turned out ok. Definitely a BG I can use.
Thanks for a great technique, anyway! It was fun!
-
TY to CG for doing a pic of my entry for her challenge.
I went way too clever with this & lost the look for the watercoloring contained within an embossed area. 'Sok. I still kinda like the look.
Fun! (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1231)
