Title: WF 18 Color Explosion Technique-- Winner Announced
Post by: Conniecrafter on February 04, 2018, 05:30:57 PM
I was almost not going to post since I didn't have the best of luck with mine but thought maybe you all will have better luck and you can share what I may have been doing wrong.  I could not get my embossing powder to work with this technique and that is what I liked best about it.  I am wondering if I didn't heat it long enough but I was about to burn my paper I felt like.
Here is the video I watched:
http://smscrapperdesigns.blogspot.com/2015/11/color-explosion-technique-tutorial.html?m=1

I used Pearl Ex pigment powders for one card and I used color burst on the second.  I think I don't like the colors of Pearl Ex I have or how I used them on the card.

When posting please use WF18 CET, no combining please and you can either use it as your background or with die cuts like she shows. Post by Feb.11 at midnight

I forgot to take a picture of my first background before making it into a card but here is a couple shots, one with the embossing and after it was dry I tapped it off an all the embossing powder fell off, so the second is adding some splatters of gold mousse to it.

I suspect the Perfect Pearls would not be a good substitute for the Lindy's Magicals.  They look like a watercolor pigment like Brushos, Color Burst, etc.  I've never seen anyone pile on that much of those powders before.  Maybe the sheer amount was what kept the embossing powder in place?

Even if it didn't turn out as you had hoped, your backgrounds are beautiful.

Oh ok, I was thinking they may be the same thing as the Pearl Ex, just a different company, maybe that is what I needed to do is add more of the pearl ex.

I am not sure I have the correct materials for this technique, but I think I might be able to mimic the look. I do like how the embossing powder looks especially when she sprays and reactivates the ink around the heated embossing powder.

Thanks, Connie!

I'm anxious to try this.  I have a few Color Bursts.  I'm wondering what holds the embossing powder?

On Lindy's site I learned all of their embossing powders are made by Ranger.  I have never heard Ranger folks explaining how to melt EP without embossing ink except on metal. But Lindy's explains to pre-heat your heat gun and heat from under the paper so it doesn't blow away.  They say especially on wet surfaces it help to also eliminate warping the paper.  So I guess I will try it!

I will be excited to learn if anyone can get the embossing powder to hold

In the video, it looked to me like the paper was still substantially wet. I figured that kept the embossing powder from blowing away, but I have not tried it yet to see.

I had fun with this. I used color bursts on all my backgrounds and added various glitter embossing powders. My backgrounds are attached below. I made 2 cards for this challenge. I cut out a dye using one background and used a whole background on a card.

Interesting technique(s) with great results, but (alas) i don't believe I'll be able to come up with a way to create anything along similar lines. Sok. I'll get to see what others do & maybe come up with .

April, I just love the shimmer you got with yours, did you have to dry it for a long time to make the embossing stick?  Or use a lot of it?  I can't figure out what I did wrong :(

Sorry Daniel that you don't have anything to use for this technique

I’ve never thought about it before, but are colorbursts and similar products just watercolor cakes that have been ground up?  Just thinking you could possibly get a crayola watercolor set, and smash the cakes to smithereens.  I am considering it.

Heidi, that sounds like a plan. Connie, I used very heavy watercolor paper and wet it quite well. I did heat the ep for awhile, but since the paper was quite wet I think it helped the paper not to burn and it was heavier paper.

Thanks for the tip April, maybe I will try it again after I get all the others done and see if I can get it to work.

Cool backgrounds April!

I made 3 backgrounds tonight.  I'm flattening them under a big dictionary over night.

Connie, did you try Pearl Ex or Perfect Pearls?  Perfect Pearls have a binder built in that is activated with a light mist of water.  Pearl Ex doesn't, so that is why it didn't stick.  You might be able to spray it with a fixative?

I used Color Bursts and sprinkled on a little Sunflower Sparkle Perfect Pearls (gold) for shimmer.  I also used embossing powder.  I found that I had to heat the embossing powder way more than usual to get it to melt ... and then in some places I think I over heated it.  It was hard to see what I was doing.  In some places it still felt grainy, and in others it melted flat in to the paper.  I did burn my paper a bit so I trimmed as much as I could off!

In the video, I don't know how she dried hers without warping?  Maybe it's her heat tool?  I heard Tim Holtz explain once the difference in heat tools.  Mine is definitely concentrated high heat.  Normally it's great for melting embossing powder.  There is another tool that's probably better for gentler drying.

Hopefully my pieces are flat by morning.  I'll take a pic.

Thanks for the push to get out my Color Bursts!

Very fun technique.  I got a muddy Northern Lights look and couldn't come up with an idea to use as Northern Lights so I used my background another way.  Thanks for this challenge Connie.

I feel like I was fairly successful making my own colorburst powders.  I have a half used Rose Art watercolor set from the school art supplies, and I just took a razor blade, scratched off the surface of the cakes, then collected it on a piece of thin paper.  I was then able to sortof tap it onto my paper.

It is not as pigmented as the colorburst and similar powders, but I might be able to get more pigment if I scratched off some of my Koi watercolor cakes?

So anyhow, I have a background done, and now need to decide what to do with it.  I was able to get the embossing powder to stick by sprinkling it on the very wet paper.  I used watercolor paper, if that makes any difference.

Very resourceful Heidi.  Can't wait to see what you make with your background!

I used watercolor paper, Color Bursts, Sunflower Sparkle Perfect Pearls for shimmer, and an assortment of embossing powders : bridal white, orange marmalade, gold tinsel, and clear ultra thick.  Not every EP on every piece!  I cut one of my pieces down to ATC size.

I'm wondering if the wet paper holds the EP, but also slows its melting?  I went back and heated a little more after they dried, as I thought they felt a little gritty.

I made a birthday card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=3847&message_id=62a991484983ea42c95ff35b73b4b1db&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock) for my nephew.

Thanks for the challenge, Connie!
I'm glad I made a few extra backgrounds.  They really sparkle in person.

I am glad you figured out how to do the challenge Heidi but oh my that sounds like a lot of work.

Cindi your backgrounds are neat and the one you used for your card is just perfect with the theme you were going with, your nephew is going to love it!

I used watercolor paper on my samples too, I just can't figure out why my embossing didn't stick, maybe I didn't heat set it well enough.

For trying a technique, every once in a while, it really wasn’t much trouble at all!  Especially compared to buying and then storing a whole new product line.

Here is my finished card. I copied Cindi’s idea to make it outer space.

I am going to try to attach a photo here that is a close up that shows the sparkle, but the forum does not allow me to do that from my iPad.  It says the file type is incorrect.  Oh well. I uploaded it in the gallery.
