Title: February 2017 Artsy Inker Challenge - Stamping with Paint
Post by: howdyheidi on February 01, 2017, 07:36:15 AM
The sign up for hosting this challenge can be found here:  http://duhnproductions.com/forum/index.php?topic=1035.0

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This month I want to start you off with a technique challenge.  I want you to try stamping with paint.  I would prefer that you try stamping with watercolor paint but if you do not have any (or if it totally just is not working for you) you can use acrylic paint too.

Here is an example where I used watercolor paint to stamp my background:
http://mylittlestampingblog.blogspot.com/2016/03/stamping-with-watercolor-paint.html

And here is a video by the Frugal Crafter that also shows a similar technique:
https://thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/2016/02/17/using-watercolors-instead-of-ink-stamp-school/

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please make a project using this technique and post it in our Artsy Inkers gallery.  Also, please link to it here so we can all find it.  You have through February 28th to play along.

Feel free to share your experiences with this, questions and any tips or resources you find.

I hope you will have fun and want to participate!

Thanks!
Heidi

Love your background, I will need to see if we have any watercolors... I know I have watercolor pencils, pens and I think hubby has some crayons but I am not sure about straight watercolors, maybe there is something left over from when my daughter was in school

Connie, I would think that even a crayola set of watercolors would work!

yea I was thinking if I can't find any I will just get a cheap set, cause I am really big at just using my distress inks watered down for my normal watercoloring :)

When I saw the title of this thread, "Stamping with Paint", I was not expecting watercolor! :o
I will give this a try!  Your background is beautiful and I enjoyed the video.

Interesting technique.  I've got a couple of different sets of watercolors I can use for this.

Your sample came out beautiful, Heidi.  And thanks for starting the monthly challenges.

I gave this a try with my grandsons watercolors, used the rainbow colors.  Then stamped over it when dry.
Added color with the same watercolors, and it worked!

Sheila, your project is so neat, and you really went over the top by doing the paint-stamping in rainbow!  Wow!  Thanks so much for doing this challenge!

I have made 2 backgrounds. Some stamping friends are coming over on Thursday and I was going to show them this technique. I will be making more backgrounds with them and then I will make my card. Looking forward to getting it done!

I swear I had commented on this thread last week!?  :idiot2: Heidi, your sample is so pretty. Love those blues.

I worked on a couple of backgrounds but didn't have success with my paint. I was using the gansai tambi pallete and I think the paint is just too thick for it to work. I've done this before and I'm pretty sure I used my sons crayons watercolors. I'm going to see if the pallete is still in okay condition and try it. Little DS loves to paint but he also loves to mix up all the colors!

Shelia, love your card! The rainbow coloring turned out great!

I am glad to hear that you guys are able to get some crafting time in.

April, I can't wait to see what you have done!  That is fun that you are going to show it to your friends!

LeighAnn, I do not have that brand of watercolors so I can't comment too much, but, did you try spritzing the whole stamp with water to get the paint to transfer more readily??  Sheila used the kids' paint, so that should work too.

Thanks!

I found that I did better with a background stamp instead of a small stamp. The larger background stamp had a little time to dry a tad while painting, so I just spritzed a little at the top ( because that is where I painted first ) and it stamped very well. When I painted a small stamp, then stamped without spritzing because it was still quite wet, it stamped blotchy. So if you use a small stamp I would wait a few minutes and let it dry some before stamping.

Here is my entry! I had fun with this. I used TH20s to paint my background stamp.

Great entry, April! I love that you tried your Twinkling H2Os!  I had not considered the sparkley paints! Thanks for playing!

Yes, April, what a great idea to use the Twinkling H2Os!  Such a cute card too!

I made a Valentine.  This technique worked better than I thought it would!  I did play around with it a bit and I'm pretty sure I did a little light spritzing before stamping.  I stamped it almost 2 weeks ago and finally photographed today.

I added a picture of a tag I made similarly, in the attachments.

I tried it myself a couple nights ago and I hated my results, so last night I watched the video, and I am thinking all my background stamps are to thin lined, so I am going to go through my stamps the next chance I get and see which ones my work better for this, now looking back I see it doesn't need to be a background stamp anyway, man where do I get these thoughts in my head, I certainly need to read better or something, YIKES!

Cindi, your project turned out really well!  And cool that you were able to make a tag too.  Thanks for playing along.

Connie, no problem, I am sure you have something in your stash that would work well for the technique, and if only part of it looks good, maybe you can cut it up and use it differently.

I plan on trying some more of this technique too!

Here is my second attempt, I used watercolor paints from Hobby Lobby, it worked a lot better on a more solid stamp, I stamped it onto designer paper, it warped the paper pretty bad.  Where the green and blue meet, the green kind of blobbed up so I took my paint brush and tried to pull it down but I think I may have messed up the water color feel to it.  I wasn't very happy with it but my hubby thinks it is one of my coolest cards, go figure.

Thanks for playing!

I was determined to use this new stamp I had got recently! I tried a couple of times with crayola watercolor and with my gansai tambi pallete. I've done this before wth kids watercolors but I think with this stamp I got it a bit too watery. Every result was just splotchy. This was fun to do and I think I would like to invest in an inexpensive watercolor pallete to use more with this technique. The gansai tambi paints are super thick and harder to move but I do like using them.
Here is my card. I cut this one kinda close'!

Thanks for hosting this month, Heidi!

LeighAnn, I love your result!  Thanks for sharing how that brand of paints worked for this. I think it is interesting that your prefer the inexpensive stuff for this technique.  Thanks for playing!

I have a panel stamped but haven't finished up the card.  I am at a loss as to how to fix it up! Might have to just frame it and call it a day!

There is still today and tomorrow left to play along, if you find the time!

Here is a card I made combining with the Christmas all year. I wanted to see if a sentiment would work and I think it was not so shabby.

I was able to try my hand at a couple more cards since I combined them with Cindi's challenge. I tried to do one by making background paper with this image but after dropping my stamp twice, I gave up!

I used the gansai tambi watercolors and a super small detail brush with this.
Here's my cards. I still need to check out the gallery for others cards, I'm super behind! Thanks Heidi for the fun challenge :-)

Those are great cards, LeighAnn, and I am impressed that you gave stamping with paint on kraft a try.  I left praise in the gallery.  So glad you had some crafty time today and thanks for playing along!

Thanks for the challenge Heidi, I enjoyed it!  Do you know ... did you or anyone else try this on clear stamps?  or just red rubber?  I debated it on my clear holly stamp last night but it was late and I decided to just go with ink.

You know, I don't think I did try clear stamps.  I should do that!

I really enjoyed this technique and want to try it out again On kraft.

I didn't try clear either. I imagine it would be pretty smudgy?

I finally posted the card I made with this technique.  I really enjoyed how it came out.  I used my new favorite paper for watercolor stamping - Strathmore mixed media paper.  It is almost as smooth as regular cardstock but thick like watercolor paper.  As a result, you can stamp a cleaner image than when you use watercolor paper.

I'm including in the post a photo of all the hearts I stamped. The first heart I stamped came out rather faint because it wasn't wet enough. And the bottom red on, is stamped with versafine so you can see how detailed the stamp  is.

I just finished reading all the posts.

Cindi - I used a clear stamp.  And it worked great.  I was worried that it wouldn't work well because it was a very detailed stamp.  But I was very happy with the results.

Sarah I am so glad you participated! I love your hearts and thanks for trying the clear stamp. I had a feeling it would work with, at least, the Koi watercolors.  I am glad to hear it did!  Your card is wonderful.

I have the mixed media paper and I didn't try it for this yet. I do LOVE it for coloring and blending out watercolor markers, with and without adding extra water.  It makes it fun and not painful to color with those.
