Title: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: howdyheidi on May 27, 2015, 02:14:43 PM
I will start the "Interview" when the party is about to start!

So, this is a really straightforward game.  I will ask the first question.  The next person answers that question and then poses the next question for the next player.

First question:

What got you into stamping and why?

I went to a stampin up party and that started it off, I loved that I could use something over and over again for my cards.

I seem to be stuck coloring with markers all the time, even though I have other things I could use, do you seem to stay with the same medium when coloring your stamps or do you like to change it up all the time?

I like to change it up all the time.  I like trying new things.  That said, I often think I should stay with one medium long enough to get good at it.  With that in mind, most recently I've been coloring mostly with watercolors or colored pencils.

I seem to be stuck right now, and it occurred to me to just start copying some of the zillions of cards I've saved on my computer instead of trying to come up with something myself.  What do you think of CASING? Pros? Cons?

We recently discussed CASEing, I wonder if I will be able to find that thread.  I really think it is good, especially when you do not have any fresh ideas, it gets you going again.  I think design teams exist to show you how to use the stamps, and therefore we should definitely use their ideas.  The only negatives I think of is 1) if you do not give credit to others if you share the card online, and 2) If you refuse to go out and try ideas of your own.  I don't think anyone one this board would do either of those things.

NEW question,
What technique do you want to try next?

It is funny,Heid, that it is YOU that asked that question ( what technique do you want to try next? ) well it is YOUR technique that you did on a card recently. It was the card with small flowers and a fence where you stamped first and then went over the stamps with a paint brush to show a water colored look. I have been wanting to do this technique for awhile! I am saving it now to do when I go stamping with friends on June 13. I just love the look. Thanks for the inspiration! AND if I post it on my blog I will give you credit! LOL! ;D

Here is my question -- would you rather learn a technique or learn how to make a project like a box, card, ect?

I am such a newbie that I want both.

Do you learn better watching a video or reading instructions?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Craft Nerd on May 30, 2015, 10:02:05 AM
It depends.  I've seen some videos that are no help at all (I'm thinking of a few where what the person was doing was fully on the screen) but sometimes, written instructions just aren't enough and I need the visual.  I think the key is the quality of the instruction material more so than the type.

I find I've been creating a lot of my backgrounds lately instead of using my pattern paper stash, so do you more often create your own background or use patterned paper?

P.S.  Cool chatty game, Heidi.

Good question Craft Nerd. I have tons of patterned paper that I hardly use now. Lately I have been making all my own backgrounds. I need to find a use for this paper though, hehehe.

Next question: Do you find you most often make a certain type of card, for instance shabby chic, vintage, steampunk, etc? Or do you mix it up?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: howdyheidi on May 30, 2015, 02:41:08 PM
I try to change up the styles of my cards, and I do have more variety thanks to the many challenges at AI, but I think I would make every card a pretty flower card if I had no other reason to make things.

Next question:

Do you have trouble getting started with your crafting, or might you have trouble actually finishing things...????
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Craft Nerd on May 30, 2015, 03:43:55 PM
I have no trouble starting stuff, it's getting it finished that is my the problem.

Do you tend to lean more toward clean and simple cards or are you an embellishment junkie?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Far North on May 30, 2015, 06:23:04 PM
I definitely am not a clean and simple card maker. I often makes scenes which require (in my view) several layers of medium and materials but not traditional ribbons, bows and not store bought stuff that are considered embellishments.

New question- Recently I was looking at some of the swap cards I received 10+ years ago and many I would call mixed media cards if you think about MM as being a project that includes at least 2 mediums. So my question is: What media other than ink did you use  in your early days of stamping?

In my early years of stamping I used embossing powder a lot because it was like magic! I also used markers and chalk.

What type of cards have you been making recently -- birthday, everyday, male cards, etc?

Stamping on objects!

What kind of objects do you like to stamp on ?

I stamp mostly on paper. I have stamped on little terra cotta  pots and I am sure I have stamped on some other things, but I can't remember now.

What type stamps are your favorite?

Nature including florals are my favorite.

What if you current favorite way of including your sentiment on a card?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Conniecrafter on June 01, 2015, 12:03:33 PM
I just bought some new tag dies so I have been trying to use them with my little sentiment stamps.

When using designer paper with your stamps do you pick your paper first or color your stamp and try to pick the paper that would go best with it?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Craft Nerd on June 01, 2015, 02:35:45 PM
Depends on my mood.  Sometimes I start with the paper and other times I hunt up the paper that will work with what I created.

When your mojo fails you, what to you do to get the creative juices flowing again?

I gather my old friends (stamps that I have enjoyed creating with many times) and begin stamping with them on a blank piece of cardstock.  And soon my friends provide lots of new inspiration.

What's the last crafty things your purged and how did you reorganize?

Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: howdyheidi on June 01, 2015, 04:26:34 PM
I recently purged by giving away some things to the thrift store.  I had some old small Christmas stamps I did not use, as well as a couple punches and odds and ends. I hope someone will get good use out of them.

I really did not reorganize, but purging did help everything fit more nicely into the space I already had alloted.

NEW Question:

Do you send out most of your cards and stamped items?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: stampwilly on June 01, 2015, 05:13:43 PM
I send out a lot - mostly birthday cards, but I still have a bunch left!

What is the latest technique you have worked on besides an AIR technique. Please describe it.

I have working the last few days on a collage card with mostly scraps from my yard.   This is my final card for Mixed Media Card (http://farnorthdesigns.blogspot.com/2015/06/june-mixed-media-card-challenge.html).

What are your current top 2 favorite techniques?

GORGEOUS mixed media card, Jan!

My favorite two techniques are marker thumping and watercolor stamping.

New question!

What is on your crafty wish list?

What is your favorite stamping company?

Where do you buy most of your stamping supplies?

Mostly I buy from the company that designed the stamp.

Do you have more stencils or dies and why?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Conniecrafter on June 04, 2015, 07:43:44 AM
Oh dies for sure, I have been buying more of them then stamps lately, need to stop though they are just too addicting.

Do you buy much paper anymore?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: howdyheidi on June 04, 2015, 07:46:50 AM
I do still buy paper.  While I do not need any, for sure, I think it is a really ecomonical way to get something new. Especially a 6x6 pad on sale?  Compare that $3 to the price of a single die or stamp...

New question:

Do you prefer to fussy cut your images or get the matching dies (when available)?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Craft Nerd on June 04, 2015, 08:59:00 AM
I'm a fussy cutter.  I have actually tried buying a die that matches a stamp yet, mostly because I feel I could spend my crafty money better on more versatile items.

Do you prefer wood mounted, clear or cling stamps?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Far North on June 04, 2015, 09:09:33 AM
Oh Sarah response your response to the die vs fussy cutting question was the same as mine and well said...And faster LOL!

Type of stamps-each as advantage. I dislike they take different storage.  But my decision is always based on finding a great image not the material it is made from.

Next Question-What is one of your most favorite creative ways to use a die?

Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Iring on June 04, 2015, 10:11:18 AM
My favorite creative way to use a die is just to cut something other than paper ... as in your AI series Jan, where I die cut and inked flowers from soda cans.

What is the largest stamping project you have embarked on?  I ask, because I'm in the middle of mine ... making my daughter's wedding invitations.  Woah!  That's why I haven't been around much lately.  Is it large in size or large in number?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Craft Nerd on June 04, 2015, 01:18:09 PM
I've done some pretty large sets of card for OWH (one year I donated 1200 cards between July and October).  And currently I'm working on the 7 piece wall art set for my office that is combing stamping and stenciling and mix media stuff.  So I'm not sure which is the largest.  One is large in number and the other is large in size.

What are you working on right now?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: stampwilly on June 04, 2015, 09:24:51 PM
I have been working on a technique I saw online where you are SUPPOSED to stamp on kraft card stock and then white emboss. Then you you go around part of the edges with a water based marker then use your water brush to pull the ink inside the area for color. Anyway, I tried several types of kraft card stock, but my colors were not showing up beautiful like hers! So, I ended up using a light tan card stock that was very smooth and it worked. I had a lot of frustration, but now I know it was the card stock that was the problem!  :-\

What colors are you more prone to use on your cards?

Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: howdyheidi on June 05, 2015, 07:01:50 PM
I am definitely prone to using blue and green.

Stampwilly, I wonder why the technique did not work on your kraft!  I wonder if it only worked on a certain brand of kraft?

Next question:

How many ink pads do you have?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: stampwilly on June 05, 2015, 09:27:03 PM
Heidi, I suppose it was a certain kind of kraft card stock that she did not mention.

I have way too many stamp pads to count! Many die based ones, quite a few pigment ink ones and some chalk pads. Not counting multi-colored ink pads.

At what time of day do you do most of your stamping?

Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview

I prefer to stamp early morning and if that is to busy it would be late at night.

How much time do you try to stamp/create?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Craft Nerd on June 06, 2015, 03:52:55 PM
I tend to spend a good chunk of my weekends crafting and not so much time during the week.  Probably around 12 hours a week.  Although I haven't done any crafting today.

What is your biggest pet peeve when stamping?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: stampwilly on June 06, 2015, 07:44:42 PM
Jan and Sarah, it seems you two posted about the same time, so I will answer both questions.

I try to craft most every day at least a little.

My pet peeve is being interrupted when I am in the middle of a project. I lose my train of thought and feel disconnected when I return to it.

new question -- Does you do any scrapbooking? If you do, do you use stamps in them?

I actually started stamping for a scrapbook, which is still not finished, and then shifted to cards.  So, sorta, since I've yet to actually finish a single scrapbook.   ;D

Do you have a blog?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Far North on June 07, 2015, 03:29:53 AM
Yes my posts on my blog Far North Designs (http://farnorthdesigns.blogspot.com) dates back to 2007 but I actually think I lost some earlier years when I had computer issues.  I appreciate the several Artsy Inkers -Cindi,Heidi, Sarah, Connie and April :smitten:who stopped by this week and left comments on my current post of a collage work from gathered yard and garden materials.

Do you have a favorite magazine that you often purchase or a recent resource book you have purchased? Briefly describe what you like about it.

I often purchase CardMaker magazine because it is available in the grocery store and they give a small discount on all their magazines.  It has mostly on-trend and modern or C&S cards.  I enjoy looking through it, but I am looking for ideas of a really great magazine that maybe has more techniques in it that I can try.  Anyone?

New question:

Will you be participating in Hangover week?
Title: Re: AIR15 Chatty Game - Interview
Post by: Craft Nerd on June 07, 2015, 10:13:54 AM
Possibly,  I've got a couple of ideas for the z fold card that I don't think I will get finished today.  Hopefully I will get them done during the hangover week.

No contest--Crayons! 'Sides, when I was a kid markers weren't invented. Even paper was a brand new invention.  ::) ;D

Since we are winding down AIR, what has been your most favorite project that you have created for AIR and why?
