Title: WF15 Something Old, Something New
Post by: djc on February 20, 2015, 01:21:55 PM
Something Old, Something New Challenge

Welcome to Winterfest 2015!
This challenge opens on Saturday, February 21 and ends on Sunday, March 2.
Keyword:  WF15-Old/New

I saw a card in the gallery a while back that had an older image coupled with a more modern technique.  It made that older image seem new again.  So my challenge is to take an old image, the older the better, and use it on a card that you’ve created using a technique that may not have been around when that stamp was made.

So what’s an “old” image?  That’s going to be relative.  Let’s say something at least three years old, but really, those of us who have been stamping for a lot longer than that should reach back for something much older.

What’s a “modern” technique?  That’s a matter of opinion.  Some older techniques are back in style.  I don’t pay much attention to what’s in style, but you might check out some blogs to see what people are doing these days.  If you have the supplies to try out a technique you’ve never used before but want to try out, now’s the time to pull out those supplies and do that technique.  If you already use the current techniques and/or art media, then just use one of them with an older image.

Clarification:  You may use a technique or art medium that is new in the sense of current or modern, or you may use an older technique or art medium that is new to you.

Requirements:
1.  You must make a new project.  It can be a card or something else.
2.  Please post your project in the Artsy Inker Gallery set aside for Winterfest 2015.  Begin the Subject line with WF15.  Under Keywords, use WF15-Old/New.
3.  Please link your gallery post to this thread and share your experiences here.
4.  You may combine this challenge with other challenges.

I’d like to offer an apology up front.  I won’t be monitoring this thread as often as I would like.  A very dear friend had a stroke on Valentine’s Day so I’ll often be away from the computer, but I’ll check in at least once a day—hopefully more than that.

BTW, if you posted the card that inspired this challenge, let me know so I can link it here.  I know I left a comment on it.

Thanks to all who participate.  I do look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Daria, I know that this doesn't open until tomorrow, but I really like your challenge idea. I have been stamping regularly for three years now, but I do have older stamps that that and I will pull on the oldest ones! I already have a fun idea!

Thank you for hosting.

I am sorry about your friend. I hope she recovers soon.

Thank you, Heidi.  She's doing better every day.

I'm glad you have some stamps you can pull out for this challenge.  I know I have a bunch of old, used stamps that I have never used myself.  I hope to play too.

Daria - I'm so sorry about your friend.  I hope her recovery goes well.

Interesting idea for a challenge.  I'm going to have to put my thinking cap on for this one.

Can we combo?

I am sorry to hear about your friend. I definitely have some very old stamps. Will need to look around for a new technique. I love techniques, so I think I can find a new one.

I have to put my thinking cap on too.....I'm with Heidi on that I've been stamping for 3 years.....but I do have a few sets they I bought before that that I only used once in a while......oh Daria I just remembered of a set of hello kitty from when I was a child! Lol! I think I'm going to try to use that set!  I'm glad I talked it out here to remember that set.  O0

I dug out this older flower stamp to do this challenge and then sat for quite a while wondering what technique I should use for the background on the card.......so I looked up and saw the washi tape holder and went where there yah go using washi was not even on the radar when this stamp was born.  I hope a washi tape background qualifies as a technique......(that is a question).  Here is the card. Thank you for playing and providing the first example.

Daria, I hope your friend continues to improve!

Sadie, your card turned out great! I can't believe that stamp is that old, it's gorgeous. It's so true how styles come back around, I'm pretty sure I've seen several new stamps recently that are similar to this.

I often wonder how clear/photopolymer will hold up over the years.

I picked out the stamp I want to use and decided on my technique. I hope to work on it today  O0

I feel like this is version 1.0 of this card and it needs some improvement, but not sure what to do. I guess I kindof feel like it doesn't look NEW enough because of the embossed background, but I do like the overall look of the card and enjoyed working with the old stamp!

Here's my card.  The new technique is the gesso resist on the clouds, butterfly and grass.  All of the stamps are old stamps.  The cloud stamp was RAKed to me after my first stamping fest - WSW in 2008 over at 2peas.  And the other stamps were from 2 big sets of clear stamps I got at Jo-Ann's around the same time.

This is such an interesting challenge, Daria!

I used this butterfly stamp from this set
http://www.overstock.com/Crafts-Sewing/Inkadinkado-Garden-Delight-Clear-Stamps/3275667/product.html
This has been a favorite set of mine and a set I purchased over 4 years ago.

I wanted to use it in a different way and create a loose watercolor look so I did the no line watercolor technique.
I went with 2 different color combos and had fun doing the process. It ended up being more abstract than I wanted but I think this is a technique that needs a lot of practice. I'm happy with the way they turned out and how the technique gave the image a whole new look. Thanks Daria for hosting a great challenge  O0

I left comments in the gallery last night, but I forgot to come back here and say WOW! to everyone who has posted.  This is turning out to be a fun challenge.  I love the creative ways you are using those older stamps.  I have some I bought on eBay years ago that are older than I am.  (That's why I like stamps made of rubber.)  I have never used them and can't quite think of what to do with them.  They are small images of cartoon characters.  Here they are. (http://www.scrapbook.com/galleries/13464/view/4939487/-1/486/0.html)  Any ideas?

Thank you, Melissa!

Daria, those are some really fun images! The first thing that popped on my mind would be to do a comic book style card, maybe stamp them together in squares and mount them on to black cardstock. Keep the coloring to primary colors? That's an awesome find!
Title: Re: WF15 Something Old, Something New

Melissa - that's not cardstock matting the card.  I set it on a piece of styrofoam out on my porch when I took the picture.
Title: Re: WF15 Something Old, Something New

Wow Daria, those are some old looking stamps!  Inky Antics has some cute samples with a fence.  The card front is actually cut in half horizontally with the fence stamped on the bottom half and the top half removed.  You could then put the cartoon image walking in front of or behind the fence.  Another place you might find samples is VivaLasVegaStamps.  They probably have similar images and sometimes include samples in their online catalog.

I used a really old image of a girl that says "Dotty's Darlin's" c1994 on it!  I've had it probably close to 20 years.
I tried the "no line distress watercolor" technique as seen on Kristina Werner's blog.  I've also seen the technique done by someone for a new stamp company called Altenew.  I wish my line was fainter, you can still see it a bit even though I stamped with gray and stamped off once or twice ... but it's nowhere near the black I would have used years ago.  I had a fainter image I was coloring ... but I didn't like the way the face turned out so I scrapped it.  Using molding paste through a stencil is not a new technique ... but even though I've had stencils and paste for years, I very rarely use it, so it was newish to me.  I also went for an ombre effect with my watercolor wash which also seems to be a recent trend, or old trend revisited.

be true to you (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=-77&pid=1102#top_display_media)

Thanks for the challenge Daria!  I had fun with it!

Thank you for the suggestions for my old stamps.  Cindi, I was thinking of using that fence with some masking.  I'll check Inky Antics and Viva Las Vegas.  LeighAnn, I love the idea of making a comic book style card with four squares.  I kept thinking I needed to create one big elaborate scene, and that seemed a bit overwhelming.  But the smaller squares would work great and be more manageable.

Cindi, I fell in love with your card!

Heidi, I changed the link so try again.  Whenever I link directly from My Gallery on scrapbook.com, people have trouble with the link.  I can see it, and now I know that some others can see it, but some cannot.  If I go back and click on my user name in some post, then I come up with a different gallery link, and no one seems to have trouble with that one.  Here the new link. (http://www.scrapbook.com/galleries/13464/view/4939487/-1/486/0.html)  Good luck.

Now that I am retired I really don't like to referred to my things as "old". :laughhard:  I like to think of the good experiences and treasured times together.   Of course a high % of my stamps qualify so I opened a drawer and the flower stamp provided some very good memories.  I was happy to combine it with the gesso resist technique. A new technique that I hadn't done previously.  Thanks for a great challenge Daria!  And hope your friend continues to progress.

Daria, thanks for taking the time to redo the link. I used to actually know what the issue was with that type of problem with links (it addes elipses in the middle sometimes instead of copying the whole link, but I can't remember why!)

My first thought was of a patterned paper pack I have from October Afternoon with similar style drawings and they also did have a comic strip.  So I really second LeighAnn's idea.  I do not recognize the characters.  It also might make a cute coloring book for a little boy or girl.

I love the cards I have seen here for this challenge. I have not had time to leave comments, but I will soon.

Here is my card. I combined this challenge with the gesso resist. The NEW technique is the gesso resist. Those are the vines in the background. My OLDIE is the stamp. I bought a sheet of rubber on line with many of these Victorian ladies many years ago. I do not think this company exists anymore! :-\ Thanks for a fun challenge!

More fabulous cards!  You guys are making my hands itch to go grab my old stamps and get busy.  But I can't.  Tuesdays I visit my oldest sister who lives in Assisted Living; afterward I'll go to the hospital where I've been spending most of my time this past week.  Thank you for all your good wishes for my friend.  She is remarkable, and her recovery has been amazing.  She's moving around so much that the hospital staff is petrified she'll fall.  They have taken preventive measures.  lol.  Making the connection between what is in her head and what comes out her mouth will take longer, but it's obviously on it's way.  Time.

Heidi, I don't recognize all those characters either.  I wish my father was still with me; he'd know them instantly.  Most of them are characters from the original Little Orphan Annie, the original Little Rascals, and I think Dick Tracy.  Anyone else recognize these?

Daria

djc those old stamps look like you have all 7 of the little rascals.  The 4th from the top row looks like the old Dick Tracy.  The cat is also from the little rascals I think, one of the little girls carried a cat around and some of the boys played really nasty tricks on that cat.  Some of the men might be from the little rascals too.

The picture down below is the original little rascals but there were several others along the way, and you might have all of them.

In the picture: The Little Rascals, circa 1934 (from left): Tommy Bond, Matthew "Stymie" Beard, Uh-Oh, Jackie Lynn Taylor, Wally Albright, Jerry Tucker and Spanky McFarland

Or it could be the Our Gang bunch.  "Our Gang was the name of a popular and successful American film series of comedy shorts centered around a group of child actors known collectively as "The Little Rascals". Between 1922 and 1944, there were over two hundred and twenty shorts, more than any other film series for a comedy team, using a revolving stable of over two hundred child actors."

The second image is one of the our gang group at some point.

These are actually quite fun to look at.  The one little boy stamp looks like Alphafa without the sticky up part of his hair....(the one on the second row on the right hand side.

I hope this helps.....

Sadie, you're a sweetheart.  I wondered if some of the characters I didn't recognize also came from the Little Rascals.  I also think that one boy is Alfalfa.  I thought the cat might belong to Little Orphan Annie and wondered if the man with her was Daddy Warbucks.  The pictures you linked help.

Melissa, the image you used on your background adds so much fun to the card.  I have to admit that my favorite element is that heart you made by embossing on canvas and adding glitter.  I would never have thought to do that, and I definitely want to give it a try.  That heart has so much texture to it.  Very cool.

I agree about the heart.  It really was the focal point, and I was surprised when I read how it was made!
Title: Re: WF15 Something Old, Something New
Post by: yellowcherrios on February 25, 2015, 11:37:16 AM
TY you guys!.  Isn't that heart cool!!  The heart was an RAK from April (stampwilly) and they come in a package of various sizes and all are light beige burlap.  But I thought about how I know many little girls (including me) love glitter so I decided to add glitter to the heart but was unsure how to get it to stick (unless I used glue or sticky EP).  I  also wanted to cover up the beige so decide on gold EP to match the glitter and added the glitter over the EP and heat together.

I have to remember about heating EP and glitter together in the future!!   O0  But of course the course burlap held onto the glitter and EP so didn't have to really worry about blowing it off--though I'd heat from underneath if doing it on CS.

Well this is the first time I have used the Tim Holtz spritzer using a distress marker for the background, also new technique of masking the stamped images so I didn't get the spritzer splashed on them.  I didn't have a name on these stamps they are so old, so I thought I would post a picture so you can see, the acrylic stamps were already mounted on these clear blocks, did anyone else buy these?  They are over 10 years old I believe.

I am a collector of antique stamps and used to really haunt the antique stores for really old stamps.  This was one of my finds.  This stamp shows that it was a well loved and used stamp, but it still does a clear image.    Used Blue Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist.

Thanks so much for this challenge.  Would love to have the opportunity to use more of my antique stamps.

No problem, Ann.

Today's the last day of Winterfest 2015.  There's still lots of time to play.

Tomorrow, I'll post the Second Chance Challenge.

Thank you for asking about my friend.  She was discharged from the hospital yesterday.  Her physical recovery is amazing, and every day she does better with her speech.  I know, with time, she'll make a full recovery.

Yesterday, Nora and I went to a craft show, and I picked up the RAKs for this challenge and the Second Chance Challenge.  I think you'll like them.

Hi, Everybody.

I've got your names on slips of paper, folded into eighths and popping around in my hat.  All I have to do is wait for Heidi to come in and pick a name.

I've got ten names in the hat--everyone who linked their card on this post; that's double the number of cards I found when I did a gallery search for the keyword for this challenge.  Hmmm.  I found all of them and more when I searched for "old and new."

Still waiting for Heidi.

Thank you to all of you for playing.  I very much enjoyed seeing your cards, and you've given me some wonderful ideas for using our older stamps.

Heidi, where are you?  This is like waiting for April to post the Bingo Words.  lol.

We're in for a wait.  She's taking a shower.  Be back soon.

Ahhhh.  Here she is.

She's drawing a name.

She's handing it to me.

I'm opening it.

And there it is!

The name of the winner who will soon receive a RAK for playing along is . . .

lovepug2!

Congratulations, LeighAnn!

I have an address for you so, unless you've moved, we're set.

Thanks again, to all who played.

I see some cool Hangover Challenges pinned to the top of this board.  Be sure to check them out.
