Title: AIR15--Clean & Simple Challenge -- WINNER ANNOUNCED
Post by: djc on May 29, 2015, 10:38:12 PM
My life is cluttered right now so the only thing that appealed to me as I thought over possible challenges was a Clean & Simple Challenge.  (Be grateful; my first idea was to make a card that only used neutral colors!)

If you need ideas, you can see lots of cards on the two blogs I linked beow, but your task is to take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy making a Clean and Simple Card that you will be proud to send to someone you care about.

•   This challenge will run from Saturday, May 30 through Sunday, June 7.
•   Your card must include stamping, and it must follow the CAS guidelines listed below.
•   Please post your card in the gallery set aside for AIR, and put AIR15--CAS in your title.
•   Don’t forget to come back here to leave comments and link to your card.
•   Combining this challenge with another one is not allowed this time.
•   I’ll draw a name from my trusty old hat to determine who will receive a RAK at the end of the challenge.

Clean & Simple cards can have layers and embellishments.  However, those elements are limited; they don’t take center stage or overwhelm the design.  From the different sites I’ve checked out, the important thing seems to be to have lots of empty space where the eye can rest.  Here are the hints posted on CAS-ology.  I thought we could use them for this challenge.  They are similar to the ones used by Addicted to CAS (http://www.addictedtocas.blogspot.com.au/p/what-is-cas.html).

According to CAS-ology (http://casology.blogspot.com/p/helpful-hints.html):
"Keep these things in mind when creating a CAS design:
•   One main image
•   Lots of open space (uncluttered)
•   Limited layers and embellishments
•   Quick and easy to recreate"

Sample Card (from 2005) (http://www.scrapbook.com/myplace/index.php?mod=galleries&u=13464&m=view&id=4938715&type=-1&size=0&search=Michael%20Strong%20Christmas%20Tree)

I look forward to seeing what you make.  Have fun.

You are too funny.  I think a monochromatic neutral card would be interesting to make too.  I like making C&S and I like the guidelines you came up with for this challenge.  Those are very good and I am looking forward to taking the challenge.  Thanks so much for offering this challenge!

I think I have a digi stamp that would be perfect for this.

I'm laughing.  April, I thought of you when I posted this challenge.  At least it's not one of those one-layer challenges.  That is way too challenging for me; I always end up taking those apart after the challenge so I can add a mat or two.

Here is my entry. I always have a hard time with this because I love adding layers and embellishments. Thanks for the challenge!

I got one done.  This was not the one I initially planned when I read the challenge.  I used the reindeer die cut left over from the warm-up challenge.
Reindeer (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1610&message_id=404edf86febfd208e9f9b00d98a5ea39&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Thanks for a great challenge.

Here is my card for this challenge.

Make A Wish (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1614&message_id=044827625494019cd2d4ed0d553f87c1&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

As I wrote in my description, I am having trouble with lighting this morning. probably should have waited for more sun! I used a Lawn Fawn stamp that I hadn't used yet to make this card.

Sarah and Kathy, your cards look wonderful.  I love that reindeer, Sarah; and Kathy, you actually made a one-layer card that I like.

Thank you both for playing.

I needed a quick anniversary card for my daughter and son in law, I hope it makes it to North Carolina by Thursday....
Not really happy with the results, but will try it again, it is a good challenge for me since I don't do it often.

Here's my card:  flower card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=1620&message_id=32055a39a007582225efe68d82d43bf0&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

I really wanted to do this challenge, b/c I do not do CAS and I really want to learn to do this style.  I actually have a couple more ideas for other cards, but I am not sure I'll get to them this week or next with things going on here at home.

Thank you Daria for hosting this challenge!  It helped me to play with something I always wanted to but never made time for---I'll be trying more in the future!

Melissa, your card is lovely.  I'm looking forward to seeing what else you make this week or next.

ETA:  I added a link to a sample card on the original post.  It's an old one but remains one of my favorite Christmas cards.

I got another card finished.  Orchid Card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=1642#top_display_media)

I had a lot of fun with this challenge Daria.  Thanks for hosting.

Oh, and I tried your link for a sample card, and I keep getting an error message.

Sarah, your card is beautiful.  The image reminds me of an old PSX orchid image that I haven't used nearly enough.  When I saw your card, I knew it was time to pull it out.

Thank you for playing.
Daria

ETA:  I don't know why the link to the Sample Card isn't working for you.  It worked when I clicked on it.  I've had that problem before when linking to My Gallery at scrapbook.com.  Maybe it works because it recognizes me.  I used to be able to find a different link by clicking on my user name elsewhere on the board, but I tried doing that now, and it just takes me to the same url.

Is anyone able to make use of the link to the Sample Card in the original post?

Oh Daria, I think I only got confused by looking at too many photos you provided and more!  But what I tried to create here was a background that complimented the movement of the image.  Thus carrying the image beyond with lots of open space and movement.  Hope that fits your thoughts of the criteria but no matter I had lots of fun!  Thanks for the challenge Daria!...Jan

Jan, your card is gorgeous!  White space doesn't have to be white.  The guidelines just call for lots of space to rest the eye, and, in my opinion, your background does that.  It doesn't overwhelm the design, and it has a feeling of tranquilty about it.  You accomplished your goal of carrying the eye beyond the image. It seems I could get lost in those swirls, and it's actually relaxing--a trip through infinity.  I know I'm saying it poorly, but I hope you get the idea of what I'm trying to express.  Thank you for playing.  Daria

Thank you to everyone who participated.  I enjoyed seeing all of your cards, and I now have more ideas for making CAS cards.  I like the guidelines from Addicted to CAS and CASology since they allow more leeway for making cards that I like, and this is so much easier than coming up with a one-layer card.  On the other hand, a couple of you did post one-layer cards that I thought were quite wonderful.

OK.  I just woke up my daughter so she could draw the winning name from my straw hat.  As usual, she didn't bother to open her eyes, just reached in and swirled around the tiny folded pieces of paper that I had already vigorously bounced around (I have my routine; she has hers.), and she drew a name.

Congratulations, April!  I have an address for you, but I'd appreciate your confirming it for me.

Thanks again, everyone.

Congrats Stamp Willy!

Thanks Daria hosting and interpreting the details of CAS!  I have seen so many cards that have all white backgrounds it is difficult to understand what is acceptable but your challenge gave me much more understanding than previously.  Thank you!
