This is a 'back-to-basics' stamping challenge. In this case the 'basic' is masking--regular & mortise.
To play, here's what you have to do:
1. Choose (or create) a frame-like stamp. I'm using an arch I made as my example, but any stamp with a blank space you can fill is legal.
2, Use a mortise mask to place stamping in the blank space.
3. Use the same 'frame' and use different stamp(s) to fill in the blank again.
4. Share both versions of your filled blanks with us. You can label your entries SF2019Blanks
5. And just for fun? At least one of your filled blanks has to use both mortise & regular masking... ::)
Because we're not apt to have many challenges (hope I'm wrong), please don't combine this with other SF19 challenges :smitten:
BTW? If you decide to 'build' your blank, you may use a copier to make the base for your fill-ins.
Here are my samples...
1. is the arch ready to be filled:
2. is the arch with a door stamp mortised into the arch & the cat mortised into the door window.
3. is the arch with its upper part filled-in with various stamps by masking, as well as a scene using both mortise & regular masking.

A great challenge that I look forward to, Daniel. Your examples are fantastic!!
-
Wow I need to look at my stamps and see if I have anything with an opening like this, this will certainly be a challenge
-
Daniel, I need a refresher on mortise masking. I googled it. It sounds like you are using the mask to protect the area around a stamped image (maybe while you color that image)? Please point out where in your samples you used a mortise mask, so I can see if I'm understanding it right. Or, let me know if there is another definition and you are expecting something else.
Thanks!
I love your samples!
I need to look for a blank to fill in!

Yes. For my sample, the arch is was my mortise. I made a copy of the arch & cut out the interior section so I could fill the inside of the arch opening without having any stamping extend beyond the arch shape. A better image might be something like a fish bowl. Stamp it on your work & stamp a 2nd for the mask, Cut out only the interior of the bowl & place it over the stamped image, Now whatever you stamp in the opening will not pass the edge of the bowl, OK?

Perfect! Got it! Thanks.

Thanks for explaining, Daniel! Now to find a good frame stamp for this!

Whoa! I masked and stamped all evening, stayed up till I finished, and came back to recheck the challenge. Nope, not finished! I have to fill in the blank a 2nd time! Ok, well I'm half finished then. I used 8 stamps, a stencil and
7 8 inks ... I have a mess to clean up! I'm happy with my finished project though. I haven't done this much masking in a long time. I enjoyed the process.
I'll be back when I finish the other half of this challenge ...

I'm sure you have lots of possibles, but (as I've said) you may 'build' a frame & make copies with a copier/printer so you only have to build it once.
-
I have an idea! Yay!

Phew!
I did a lot of masking! I have 2 finished cards, but now I'm afraid I still might not have completely met your challenge. I didn't use mortise masking again,INSIDE the mortise masked jar.
Ah well ... I have to move on to other challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed this one though! I did more fussy cutting, masking and scenic stamping than I have done in a long, long time. I'm very happy with my finished projects.
Here are my cards :

Peppermints in a jar (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=4521#top_display_media)
Thanks for the challenging challenge Daniel!
-
Cindi. You filled in all my blanks spectacularly!❤❤❤
-
:smitten: Aww, shucks! Thank you!
-
You're welcome. Even with the peppermints, you mortised some of them on the edges of the container.
-
That I did!
-
I’m having so much trouble choosing a frame or container to use for this challenge. Sooner or later, it will come to me!

I really don't have any 'frame' stamps. I was sorely tempted to draw a fishbowl or jar or ? and make copies of it for future use. Since I had my 'built' arch I used it.
While I would prefer that players use or make a 'mortiseable' stamp, I'm ok with someone drawing one--long as it's the only solution and all else is actual stamping. O0

Here are my two entries. The mortise method is easier than the masking! I liked how they both turned out.

Thanks, Daniel. Masking is always tough for me. But, I need to get out of my box and branch out!

I have only made one card so far, will have to see if I have time to make another since I would like to get to April's challenge too and Sunday is going to be a very busy day so I may only have time for one more challenge. I think I described what I did in the description of the card in the gallery.

Here is a closeup so you can see what I did a little better

I don't think I have ever done this much masking and don't think I have ever done Mortise masking, it was a fun technique.
-
Excellent job, Connie. Couldn't resist a pun in my praise... ;)
Masking was probably the first real stamping skill I picked up & cutting masks has become relatively routine,
-
I did a hot air balloon. Put a unicorn and stars on the inside and stenciling on the outside.
I did it several times, the best insides were ruined by the outside. This is not the one I liked best
But the one that came together best.
The balloon stamp comes empty in the center for you to make a scene. I never used it, I didn’t see how to do it.
But cutting out the center made it easy to figure it out.
Thank you Daniel for helping me see how.

Alrighty then, this is the only challenge I have left. Will be trying something today! #>
-
Sheila, your balloon is so pretty! Love this idea because so many hot balloons have things on them.
