An alternative to different folds maybe to change up the style of the border beyond layers on matting the image.  Using punches and rounding the corners is probably the simplest but also die cuts, tearing, specialty scissors, stamping or hand drawing borders...could be used.

Another way to gently move from doing a 'centerfold' is to go left or right of the middle to score the single fold line. That's fun for adding diecut/punched or other stuff to the 'short' side of the card. ;)

I am with Carefree Sadie - a rut - not something that I am familiar with,  So much to see, to do, to be.  I also refused to acknowledge the word "bored"
