Title: INF14 ATC Challenge - ***** Winner Announced and trade partners posted*****
Post by: Iring on October 03, 2014, 12:36:10 AM
This challenge is to make at least two Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) using the masterboard technique.

Here is one video tutorial (http://thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/2014/09/06/learn-to-stamp-a-masterboard-and-a-freebie/) on making a masterboard.  I'm sure you can find others as well.

Since we will be using our masterboards to make ATCs, use heavy cardstock, bristol, watercolor paper or the like, as it will be the foundation for your Artist Trading Card.

If you wish, you can make yourself an ATC viewer by cutting out an ATC sized hole in a larger piece of cardstock or paper.  You then move the viewer around your masterboard until you find an area you'd like to use.  Trace around the ATC opening, and now you know where to cut out your ATC.

Use a 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 inch piece of your masterboard as the base of your ATC and add more stamping, trims, embellishments, maybe ink the edges ... and show us your finished ATCs.

Challenge:
1.  Make a masterboard.  I suggest 8 1/2 by 11 inch or larger.
2.  Take a photo of your masterboard before you cut it up!  You may even want to make a copy of the whole, before it becomes parts.
3.  Make 2 ATCs using pieces cut from your masterboard as a base.
4.  If possible, add your masterboard as an image attachment to your reply to this post.  Put one photo showing your two ATCs in the gallery with the keyword for this challenge, which is ATCINF14
5.  Keep one ATC for yourself and mail one ATC (yep, they are meant to be traded!) I will post a list of swap partners at the end of Inktoberfest.  Keep it simple, just stick the ATC in an envelope and get it mailed in a timely manner.

I will randomly draw a name from all qualifying participants and send a RAK.

Thanks for playing!  I look forward to seeing your creations.  Please ask if you have any questions and share your experiences.

ETA :
And the winner of a RAK is ...
Heidi!
Congratulations Heidi!  Your package is ready to hit the PO!  Thanks for taking my challenge!

ATC Trading Partners :  As ATCs are meant to be traded, I thought it would be fun to trade at the end of this challenge.  I pulled names out of a bowl in pairs.  Please keep it simple, just seal one of your ATCs up in an envelope and mail it to your trade partner.  Message each other if you need snail mail addresses.  Please reply to this thread when you receive your ATC so your partner knows it's safe and sound!  Thanks so much for playing!

Ok, now that I've spelled out the rules ... I'll share the inspiration for this challenge :

I took a class last month with Jill Haglund (Tweety Jill) at my LSS.  We made masterboards on bristol and watercolor paper using punches (as masks), stencils and spray ink.   Next we added stamping, random or not so random.  We made ourselves a viewer, and traced and cut out some ATC bases.  We then added more stamping (if we felt it was needed) and embellishments and turned them in to ATCs to fill a tray (7 Gypsies or similar) to hang on the wall.  Four of the ATCs in my Halloween tray came from one masterboard.  The remaining ATCs were made using other various techniques.

Jill had us make two masterboards each.  One of my masterboards I really didn't like, so I cut all of my ATCs from my favorite masterboard.  When I got home I came close to throwing the uglier masterboard away, in fact I debated whether to even bring it home!  But then ... I took my trusty viewer, and moved it around, and I was able to cut 5 potential ATC bases from it.  So don't despair if your masterboard is looking a little crazy!  I bet you can find bits and pieces that will become the foundation of something wonderful!

I'll add some pictures tomorrow.

Click on the pictures below to get a larger view.

The first picture shows the ATC bases that were cut from my masterboard.  Sorry I don't have a picture of the whole masterboard (do as I say, not as I do, haha!)  These are waiting to be stamped and embellished to become complete ATCs.

The second picture shows the ATC tray I made in class.  Four of the ATCs in the tray were cut from my first masterboard.  They are :
1.  googlie eyed skulls
2. spooky witch hat
3. Happy Haunting
4.  Owl in a tree

Can't wait to see your ATCs!

Oh how interesting!  Can't wait to watch the video!  I really like the idea of a masterboard, and I just love your finished product showing all those ATC's together to make art!  wow!!!

I really love this challenge because (like I also said on LeighAnn's tag challenge) it not only has you make an ATC but you have really shown how to use the ATC's in a lovely finished product that we can use.  Very nice!

Thanks so much for hosting!

This was fun! I have done this a few times but it has been awhile.

Here is my masterboard using tape, tissue paper, plastic wrap and Distress inks. I had pinned this technique and it was fun using it on this challenge.

Well, this was fun!  I really enjoyed this process a lot!  I have had trouble with collage stamping in the past, but I think the answer is JUST make a big collage and cut it up! lol.  I also took the advice in the video to have Gallon, Quart and Pint sized stamps, and that really helped.

Here is my masterboard. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=-71&pid=601#top_display_media)

I was able to cut a lot of ATCs (I did make an atc finder tool) and I am going to try to just put that photo here.  (well, it is too large of a file and I cannot figure out how to change that on the ipad).

Oh, Heidi - your master board is fabulous.  And you made some really cool ATCs with it.  Your DS is definitely a budding crafter.  He did a fabulous job coloring the flowers you used on the one ATC.  I really love that image, too.

Thanks very much.  The funny thing, I showed DS the ATC I made with his flower, and he had no recollection of coloring it.  For him (in kid time) it was ages an ages ago.  lol

Well I made a masterboard but I did it a little different.  I gessoed the watercolor paper with black and then stamped with one stamp in differnt colors.  The stamp was a spider web.  I wanted a Halloween background.  It didn't quite turn out the way I had envisioned but it still looks neet.  I made four Halloween ATCs from the board.

Halloween ATCs (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=605&message_id=769897b0bcf9a0976484d22687c8dc5a&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

The Masterboard picture is enclosed in this post.  Thank you for looking.

I'm so excited to see that you've been busy this weekend!  And you get it!  The masterboard can be made in so many ways.  I was hoping people wouldn't think they have to use spray ink.

April, I love the colors and textures in your masterboard ... and the ATCs are wonderful.  You can see the sparkle, even online!

Heidi, I really liked seeing the layered stamping and stenciling on your masterboard, and as I mentioned in the comments I really like that swallow looking bird stamp.  Once you cut it in to ATCs I liked it even better!  I love the ATCs you got from your masterboard!

Thanks so much for doing this challenge, I realize it takes a bit of work!

Sadie,  my reply posted, and then I found your ATCs on page 2!

I really like your masterboard and ATCs too!  Isn't it cool how different they all turned out?  I really like how you used the spider webs, and the black, white and bright colors.  Wonderful!  I think it's neat how in some places the spider webs look like webs and in some places more like splats.

You're welcome Jan!  I like what you did!  I think the fact that you used leftover ink from the paper towel challenge really adds texture and the white stamping adds a lot of interest too.

I'm loving the variety of responses to this challenge!  Great job everyone!

I only finished half of my master board before chunking it…..well it became a scrap paper instead.

I was trying to avoid doing a collage, but it didn't work with the stamps I was working with.

Does making a master board lend itself to collages?
Title: Re: INF14 ATC Challenge
Post by: Craft Nerd on October 11, 2014, 08:41:54 PM
I finished the ATCs from my first masterboard and made a second masterboard.  I'm going to take pictures tomorrow because the lighting in my house sucks for photos.

Like Jan, I used the leftover paper towels from Stampwilly's challenge, but instead of using the piece as a whole, I ripped up a couple of pieces and Mod Podged them all over a piece of water color paper.

Melissa your question is not totally clear to me.  Perhaps it is because there is a only slight difference in a collage project versus a masterboard.  When I made my collage style single layer bookmarks I worked on my bookmark base to create a visual pleasing bookmark for my recipient and myself.  A collage is a finished piece of art with many elements/layers.

The first part of this ATC swap is to make the masterboard.  I think of it as trying to make a nice piece of printed paper like I would buy in store if I wanted one for the background of my ATCs.  If you think of all the printed paper in a store you know “anything goes”.   You can include as much stamping as much as you like on the masterboard.   The masterboard is generally a piece created rather quickly because it is only a background paper meant to be cut into several smaller pieces for the design of several paper projects (cards, tags, bookmarks, ATCs, inchies etc).

Hope this helps...Jan

Jan, I think your explanation of the masterboard is helpful.  If you don't want to do collage, you may just want to do some inking or ink spray and then do a repeated stamp like a more simple patterned paper.  The gallery for this challenge shows many approaches to the master board.
Title: Re: INF14 ATC Challenge
Post by: yellowcherrios on October 12, 2014, 11:07:19 AM
Thank you Jan.  Your explanation does help me.  I was wondering if master board are always a collages.  I like your PP example.  :)  That helps me visualize a master board.

Heidi, I've been having a hard time getting the gallery to show the specific challenges….BUT I did find the search box in the gallery!!  yeah!  and I was able to search with the tag!  TY for reminding me of those in the gallery!

I'll try again today!  Not sure I'll finish in time, but I am still going to try making  master board.

Melissa, I think you are defining collage different than I am...that's why I didn't understand your question.  I tried to further update clarify in my first response below. Generally a single piece of printed paper/masterboard is not a collage.  It would not be a framed piece to stand alone as a piece of art. A collage is a finished piece of art that you would not cut apart for other projects.

M-this challenge only requires 2 ATCS...are sure you can't find 2 pieces on your 1st masterboard? Think of bold black stamping as a way to calm down a busy design or if everything is too dark do a whitewash or use white inked images as brightening areas or using cut images or die cuts to cove parts you don't like. You can do this! Limit your time (like 20 minutes?) and you will be done!
Mostly remember this is your playtime, have fun and no serious thinking!

Well I am just plain proud to say that I took Cindi's challenge & survived the self-imposed frustration!  I 'found' 2 ATCs in my masterboard & a fun aspect is that (for me) they are non-directional. Any way I turn them, I find them interesting.

Cindi & I had a delightful chat t'other day & she understands that I'm unable to share a pic of the uncut masterboard I made. That said, we both agreed that it was neat to see how everyone tackled the concept of both making a 'masterboard' & then using it for projects--including the ATCs for her particular challenge.

For the 'MB' I ended up using, I started with a USPS priority mail envelope as the base. I applied several acrylic paints & smooshed them around, then started to stamp with no rhyme or reason. I used both VersaMark watermark ink & Distress inks with various rubberstamps. Since I was in a hurry, I tried speed drying the paints & inks. Well that didn't go well, but I figured I had nothing to lose by compounding the problem. So I used embossing powders on the bloody board. Know what? I still 'hated' it, but (being a stubborn individual) I was determined to finish Cindi's challenge.

While Cindi & I were chatting , we discussed the aspect of whether MB's creations are affected when the project(s) from them are specific--i.e. ATCs, tags, etc.  Does that put us in a position of creating a composition with a masterboard--rather than a free-form MB? We agreed that we didn't 'know', but enjoyed discussing the matter.  ;D

Along with many other of our Party Challenges, this one has been as much about the chatting as the actual doing. I call that GREAT!

Lots of laughs on this one Daniel.  Defining the challenge project is not near as much a controlling factor as most of your challenge twists! :laughhard:

TY Jan!  That definitely does make sense that difference b/w a collage and MB.  I will go back and see if I can find something from my original MB--the funny thing is that I started using it for testing ink washes and it kinda looks cool despite the stamping was not complete at all (I was making a scene in with MB…forgot to include that info) and the scene wasn't working right with proportion.  I think I will try to get back to it and see what happens, but not sure I'll get to today.

I made a masterboard!!!  I did redo the board.  I did try to do as Jan said and look for 2 ATCs in my original but decided to redo b/c it was on marker paper to begin with (I reread instructions and noticed I needed to use bistol or WC paper).  I did make a scene like I originally wanted but on bristol paper, but when I was finished I thought of Jan mentioning that a master board is made to be cut up.  Well my scene didn't look like one made to be cut up---so needless to say, I started over.   I can show my scene before I color it after I take a photo, but I plan on coloring it and uploading it next week hopefully.

So I started over again, and I have to say I did have so much fun!!!  I loved inking the craft mat and laying down the paper then lifting to see what it made!! So much fun!!  and I was having fun and not worrying about what goes where or if it's lined up etc!  Very freeing!

I cannot figure out how to add a picture to this thread, but here is the link to my master board:

LOL, Cindi! Sorry, but the priority mail envelope I used for my Masterboard was cardboard; not Tyvek. Even I'm not that crazy! :o

Tyvek is the brand name for a form of sheet plastic. It is used in the housing industry to sheath construction prior to siding & such. It is also used to make mailers & such. I have stamped on it, but always with solvent-based inks &/or acrylic paints.

Oops Daniel!  I jumped to the wrong conclusion!  I just mailed something in one of the priority mail envelopes that was made from the plasticy paper stuff so I assumed that was what you were using.  And yes, I've seen whole houses wrapped in it (insulation?  weatherproofing?) before they put the siding on.

Oh I know those envelopes!  The mail woman told me that they are VERY strong.  I've seen houses around my area with the words "tyvek" on the side and thought that it was the insulation…good to know it goes with the plastic instead.

I just finished looking at all the Masterboards and ATCs.  Wonderful work and so much fun!  I also read through this thread.  Now I'm ready to go!  Too bad today is my day to go to my sister's.  And tomorrow is my daughter's birthday.  And so it goes . . .

LeighAnn, unless it's hiding, I see that you were unable to finish your ATCs.  If you can, post them this week to the Second Chance Challenge.  I'll make some too, and we can trade if you like.

Well, I almost didn't make it, but I have just posted my masterboard and ATCs.  Yeah!

Cindi, thank you for the challenge.  I've been working on this off and on all day, and it was fun!

Here are the ATCs (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastupby&cat=0&pid=686&uid=553#top_display_media) and the Masterboard. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastupby&cat=0&pid=687&uid=553#top_display_media)

I can't tell you how happy I am to have actually done something.

I need to add something to the last ATC.  I wonder if I'll ruin it if I try adding copper Liquid pearls.  Hmmm.

Cindi, your great RAK of the Rubber Stamp ATC book arrived yesterday.  Thank you so much.  I am really going to enjoy looking at the book and hopefully trying some great new techniques!  How fun!  Thank you !!!!!

Heidi, I'm glad your RAK arrived!  Enjoy!

Daria, I love the ATCs you made, and your masterboard too!  The links above didn't work for me, but I did find them in the gallery.  I didn't add new links here, because I think I must have gremlins in my laptop.  Is anyone else having trouble with gallery links?  I added new links for one of Far North's projects and they worked one day and not the next.

Sadie and I traded ATCs and we both received them in the mail.  I hope others have traded and are seeing happy mail too!  Its always fun to get mail from each other and everything looks even better in person, doesn't it?!

I am justly reproved, Jan!

I posted on the chat that I had recieved your wonderful ATC, but did not post on this thread--nor did I PM you. Mea maxima culpa, ma'am

I mailed an ATC to you about a week ago. Hope it reaches you soon.

I received my ATC from Craft Nerd today. Thank you. The bottle top embellishment is really cool in person.  Sarah also enclosed stamps she used to make the ATC.  Thank you so much Sarah!  They are really neat and I will enjoy using them.
