Title: INK 15 - Masking -- Winner Announced
Post by: Conniecrafter on October 16, 2015, 07:48:31 AM
I try not to be too bulky on the cards that will be going through the mail for Christmas so I thought of this challenge.  Make an all one layer card, but make it look dimensional by masking and stamping the background and main images separate.

What I did was take a scrap piece of paper the size of my card and die cut an opening (oval) for my main image to go inside. I put removable tape on the back of each piece and then laid it all back on my base, then removed the center (oval) where I stamped the images and then shading around the outside of the image, when done I added the oval piece back over the image and removed the background piece and stamped and embossed my snowflakes and sentiment and then added ink to color my background.  All one layer but it looks like two layers.  I did add that piece I worked on to my card base because I can't seem to be able to emboss without making my card warp and I wanted to be able to tape it to my card base so you are allowed to do that.  I hope I was able to explain that easily, I am not very good at that and I thought it up myself so I don't have any video's to share but I am sure others have done it.

The card does not have to be Christmas it can be any theme at all.  I will chose a name of all those that participate in the challenge and will send a goodies package out to you.  I don't know if I am forgetting anything so please ask questions on what I may have missed.

I will post the card I did in the gallery.

Here is a sample that I did for the challenge:

Yes you can combo with another challenge.
Label your card:  INK 15 Masking  and please share the link back here so I can put you in the drawing for a package.
You have until the 25th at midnight to post your creation.

You did well explaining the challenge, especially once I took a look at you sample.  Cool challenge.

Can we combo with other challenges?  And what label should we use?

Sounds fun! I am not sure I have done this before. I know I have done the sponging inside a mask, but don't think I have done both inside and outside on one card.  It really makes an impact!

Thanks for hosting!

Fun challenge, Connie! I try to keep my cards from being too bulky so this is going to be a good one to do!
Love your sample card, thanks for hosting :)

I totally agree with making 1-stamp cards and my post office is extremely strict!  My cards are generally 2-layers but I am very careful with the dimensional dots and bows on ribbons. I'm thinking on what stamps I want to use.

I made a pretty little Christmas card using this technique.  Thank you for reminding me how charming a thinner card can be.  Here (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=83&pid=2047#top_display_media) is the lovely card.  Thank you for looking.

I made a one layer card using more masking than I've done in quite a while!  My masks were cut and punched from low tack contact paper.
Thanks for the challenge!

Here is my entry. My embossed snowflakes are hard to see in the photo. Thanks for helping me practice more on masking!

I think I know the answer to this, but I wanted to clarify.  Does your main stamped image need to be inside and only small stamps outside? So basically, you cannot overlap a stamp over the masked line?  I am trying to get an idea of what stamps and masks I am going to use!

Thanks!

I am going for a look of layers without there actually being layers, I was imaging the main image (scene or bigger image) inside the center masked off area. You can use big stamps on the background but if the stamps over lap your masked off are I am afraid it might not look like a layered card, does that answer your question or are you more confused now. LOL

When I do this technique in the future, I think I will use slightly brighter colors. I thought this got a little dark with all the sponging I did, but I do like the resulting look.  Thanks so much for hosting!

Connie, this was a real challenge but lots of fun!  It was much harder with rubber stamps on blocks...but can be done.  Daniel always insists that masking is the #1 one technique to learn because it greatly expands the use of stamps.  I missed him at this event.

Thanks for the challenge!

Your card is just gorgeous Jan, And Nora did a wonderful job on her masking too, but as I said I am not very good at writing out what I was going for , that is why I don't know if I would be good on a design team, getting to that point of having to write out the description would hurt me.

I was going for the effect that you used pattern paper and dies on your card to give it a layered look, but everything being one layer, which is why you would have to mask off an are. My challenge was so close to what Heidi had us doing, except she wanted us to use a stencil and small stamps inside the area and we could use patterned papers with hers. I think Heidi got what I was saying when she asked about it earlier in the post.

But since I wasn't very clear in my description, I will certainly put you both in the drawing for my little package and thanks so much for sharing such beautiful cards using masking technique :)

Oh my goodness Connie I am sorry that I did not understand your card was more than a sample but rather a masking technique you wanted us to follow.  I will write you after INK15. Thanks for your understanding and including my card in the drawing.

Congratulations to Heidi!  Connie,  I am sorry I did not read your directions much more clearly!  I am at fault there, as I was in way too much of a hurry.
