Title: INF14 The Shadow Knows Challenge -- Winner Announced
Post by: djc on October 03, 2014, 03:59:13 PM
Welcome to our first Stamping Celebration here at Artsy Inkers!

ETA:  Things I forgot to mention.  (Thank you to the other hosts who did remember; that's what clued me in.)
This challenge runs from Saturday, Oct. 4 through Sunday, Oct. 12.
There will be a RAK for one participant who's name is drawn from my trusty straw hat.
No combining with other challenges -- That's a first for me, but I think it's the way to go for this event.

My challenge is a very simple one.  It uses the Versa Shadow Technique as demonstrated by Erin Gonzales of Hand Stamped Style in a short video tutorial:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMRl3hkM95E.  It’s simple and very effective.  As Erin mentions in her video, it’s a way of making a white-stamped image stand out.  Erin, thank you for sharing this with us.

You might remember Anna-Karin's Layers of Ink Challenge from WSW11 on Two Peas.  She used two-layer stamping to create a more realistic shadow, but that’s not the technique we’re using for this challenge.

For this challenge, you need white pigment ink and a VersaMarker Watermark Pen.  I figured someone would ask so I tried it using the Dove Blender Pen; it was lighter than the VersaMarker, and once it dried, you couldn’t see it.  Of course, alcohol blending pens won’t show up at all.  I even tried it with a TomBow Marker in a darker shade than the stamped image.  If the marker touched the white ink, it colored it.  It was very hard to use and I quickly gave it up.  I tried picking up VersaMark ink directly from the ink pad with a Precision Tips Q-Tip, but I made a huge mess when I applied it to the cardstock.  All those experiments made me appreciate how easily and beautifully the VersaMarker put down the watermark outline.

Here are my sample cards. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=581#top_display_media)

The Technique:

1.  Test the Versamarker on the cardstock you're planning to use.  Erin says to use a dark color (probably so the white ink shows up), but not all dark colors work.  It worked on all of my sample cards including some lighter ones like kraft and limeade.

2.  Stamp your image with white pigment ink.  (Do they even make a white dye ink?)  Remember it takes a bit longer for pigment ink to dry so just walk away or do another challenge before continuing.  Use ordinary cardstock, not glossy, or it will never dry without embossing it (unless it's Brilliance pigment ink).  Erin says you can use a solid or line image, but I can't imagine that a line image would work as well as a solid one.  Give it a try if that's what you have.  Probably one that has a lot of lines within the borders would work fine.

3.  Use a VersaMarker pen to outline the entire image.  This ink also needs time to dry so move the cardstock around as needed so you don't smudge it as you work.  When done, set it aside to dry before making your card.

4.  Use your image on a project.

5.  Use the Keyword TSKINF14 when you post your project in the gallery.  Be sure to come back here to link it up and share your experiences.

I'll be away from the computer most of Opening Day.  As soon as I can, I'll check this thread and respond to your questions.

I hope you have fun!

Daria

ETA:  I put the sample cards in the gallery, but I wasn't able to upload the complete description.  I'll put it here, but you might want to go to my scrapbook.com gallery (http://www.scrapbook.com/galleries/13464/view/5185719/-1/0/0.html) where you can see the details and the cards at the same time.

These are my sample cards for The Shadow Knows Challenge.  This challenge uses the Versa Shadow Technique demonstrated by Erin Gonzales of Hand Stamped Style.  Here’s a link to her short video tutorial:    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMRl3hkM95E.  It’s simple and very effective.  As Erin mentions in her video, it’s a way of making a white-stamped image stand out.  Erin, thank you for sharing this technique.  I loved the way it turned out.

To easily create a more conventional shadow, check out Anna-Karin Evaldsson’s Layers of Ink Challenge from WSW11.  She used two-layer stamping to create the shadow, but that’s not the technique we’re using for this challenge.

Oh, my.  I didn't expect the video tutorial to show up right here.  How'd that happen?  I'm going to go back and just write out the link instead of putting in a hyperlink.  It doesn't seem right to have appropriated the video.  We should have to go to her site to click on it.  Am I missing something here?

Well, I went back and got rid of the hyperlink, but the video is still there.  This bothers me a lot.  Isn't it like stealing her video or does clicking on it here give her the same recognition/credit/whatever as if we went to her You Tube site and clicked on it there?

Daria

ETA:  All is well.  Sadie has reassured me that clicking on the video here is the same as clicking it on YouTube.  No difference at all.  Thank goodness.

Daria

I saw your examples last night and I just think they are lovely. I am looking forward to trying this.  I have not used my versamarker a lot, so I appreciate another way to use it.

Heidi, I know what you mean about the VersaMarker.  Mine gets dragged out when I need to fix up some detail that didn't emboss the first time around.  Then I forget about it.  I keep thinking I'll try writing with it and then embossing that, but I haven't tried it.  It works great for this technique.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I do not have a decent white ink pad or a versamarker but I did watch the video to see if I could substitute something else for those.  No, there really isn't much in the way of a substitution for those in this challenge.  Thank you for hosting djc, this is a really interesting technique.

This sounds like a great challenge, Daria.
Your samples are lovely. I don't have a versamarker but I might have something that will work well. Gonna check and see! Thanks for hosting O0

Phew!  You're off the hook Daria!  I love how conscientious you are, and here I was thinking ooh how cool she got the video to play right here in the forum!

I love this challenge!  I hope my poor Versamarker is not dried out from under use.  When I watched the video I was awed by the impact such a simple technique made.  Ooh, and I have the same stamp she used, and it hasn't seen ink yet.  Time to play!  Thanks Daria!

Sadie, I worried a bit about that too, but I thought most people would have a VersaMarker somewhere, perhaps forgotten, in their supplies.  For the white pigment ink, how about trying a very light color of ink instead?

LeighAnn, go for it!

Daria, do you think something else like a fantastix picking up the versamark ink would work?  They are more sturdy than q tips.

BTW, my versamarker was only 99 cents at Michaels.  I have written with it and embossed, and fixed a blank spot in an embossed image too.

Cool technique.  I've got an embossing pen (not VersaMarker) so I'm going to see how that works.

I have a nice starting piece for a card.  Now ... how to finish it off?

Recommendations : walk away from your white pigment ink and get something to eat!  Haha!  I realized I had a shaky hand from too much coffee this morning.  Came back and did the outlining after lunch and it went much better

Also, I tried using Dyan Reavely's white spray ink on her blank ink pad.  Has anyone else tried this?  I'm not having any luck with it at all.  I found another video where she "primes" the pad, but my ink is too wet and beading up on the stamp like water.  I haven't been able to get a good impression.  It sure looks good in her videos!  I went back to a Colorbox Frost White pigment pad and that's what I used for my challenge piece.

A finished project, woohoo!
I made a birthday card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=593#top_display_media) for my Aunt Jackie.

It might have taken all day  :idiot2:, but I had fun doing it!  As I said in the post above, I wasted some time playing around with white ink spray ... then my Versamarker was so old the brush end was rotted and the bullet end ran out of ink ... I actually tried to replace the nib but I didn't have one that fit ...  but never fear, I had another, newer Versamarker!  Yeah!

I really enjoyed this challenge Daria.  I love the results!  I can see myself doing more of this technique.

Cindi, I love your card.  Isn't that a fun technique!

Sarah, I hope your embossing pen works.  Let us know.  I believe that not all embossing inks are the same; I think I read that some, like VersaMark, are also watermark inks, but not all are.

Heidi, you made out.  Nora and I were at a Michael's today, and they didn't even have a VersaMarker.  She ended up at a stamp store where it cost $3 something, and we thought that was a good price!

See you in the morning.  Did anyone watch the Giants Game today?

My embossing pen worked.  O0  I'm just waiting for the liquid pearls I added to dry so I can finish assembling the piece.  I was a little worried the pen wouldn't work because if I use it on white paper, it comes out a pale green.  But it worked fine on the piece I did yesterday.

Sarah, that's great!  What kind of pen was it?  Maybe someone who doesn't have a VersaMarker will have yours instead.  It's always good to know about things we can substitute.

I'm curious to see your card now.  I'll check back.

It is a Zig Emboss Writer.  It has a fat tip and a thin tip.  And allegedly it is clear, but as I said, on white it looks slightly green.  I bought it at either Michael's or Jo-Ann's years ago.  It is only of the tools I tend to forget about and hardly ever use.  So thanks for a new way I can use it.

I googled it, and it's still available, but the price varies wildly.  I've seen it offered for around $3 and up to over $16!!!  I'm glad you already have it and it works!  Maybe someone else has one tucked away too.  The tips look ideal for this technique.  It speaks well that you've had it so long, and it's still doing the job.

Thanks for sharing the info.

Jennifer McGuire has a tutorial, her first for Splitcoaststampers, on Masking Alternatives.  She uses the VersaMarker for one of the three techniques she demos.  Since we've talked about how our VersaMarkers have been languishing unused, I thought I'd link it up so you could take a look at another way to use it or other embossing pens:  Masking Alternatives (http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/maskingalternatives/?utm_medium=Email&utm_source=ExactTarget&utm_campaign=)

My Michael's didn't have a versamarker or any other type of pen like that.

DH works near a Joann's so I'm gonna send him in to see if he can find  one or something similar.

I haven't watched the video yet, but thanks for the link Daria!  I'm saving it for tomorrow when it's not so late!

I'm linking up a card I made today where I used my Versamarker, because it was out, and I thought to use it because of this challenge.  I didn't add it to the challenge gallery because it doesn't use the challenge technique, but I thought you might like to see it anyway.

Kathy, yes you can color in your image.  It's going to be good to see this technique used with a line image.

I tried this today and one image I used (a shaded line image) just wasn't the right image.

Another trial, I saw that my versamarker made absolutely no watermark on the back of a textured green cardstock (the smooth side) that I tried.  So I will need to try another card stock.

April, that turned out great.  You've given me another way to feature that cardinal image.  The last time I used it, I CASED one of Nora's cards  and ended up making a bunch of those so I'll have to wait a while before using it again.  lol.

Lol! My DH would probably be embarrassed that I told y'all he went to a craft store for me ;D. He's a keeper for sure. He's often went craft shopping with me and even has picked me out stamps and stuff before. Who knows maybe one day he will want to stamp too O0.

He didn't find anything BUT - I had a marker that had a fine tip that had dried out. I rubbed my versamarker ink pad with it as I traced along the outline of my image and it worked! I will upload it when I get it mounted to a card base. I love this technique so next craft order I make I'm gonna order a versamarker. Thanks for introducing us to this technique, Daria!

What a lovely technique.  I did get white on my versamarker even after letting my quick drying pigment ink dry overnight, but I just sortof drew it off on the back of my hand as I went along and all was fine.

Thanks for offering this fun challenge!

This was a really great technique! I wasn't able to find a versamarker or any other type of embossing pen in any of our local stores so I made do with what I had. I did try to pick up the ink with one of those fantastix but it didn't pick up ink too well. I have some old markers that I was pretty sure some of the ink in them had dried up. I found a pale pink one that had. So i loaded the marker nib worth versamark ink and traced along the outline of my images. I will be purchasing one of those markers for sure! It really gives a nice creation of depth.

I think some other inksters had mentioned some paper not working too well and I had trouble with cardstock that had texture to it. The CS I used is the Recollections brand, I think. It's pretty thin and has a smooth texture.

Thank you, Daria! I loved this technique

Heidi and LeighAnn, I just saw your cards in the gallery.  Beautiful, beautiful work!

Heidi, what brand white pigment ink did you use that didn't dry overnight?  I think I'll stay away from that one.

Also, I saw Cindi's card again, and I really think it qualifies for this challenge.  She used the VersaMarker on the inside on the image instead of the outside--a terrific variation, I think--another way to highlight the image with a VersaMarker.  I think that's a bit harder than outlining since you have to be careful to keep the width of the line the same throughout.  Otherwise, you would lose the lighter bordering areas.

Nora, Heidi, and Cindi:

Please edit your gallery post and put in the keyword for this challenge:  TSKINF14.

Then your cards will show up with the other ones HERE (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/thumbnails.php?search=TSKINF14&submit=search&album=search&title=on&newer_than=&caption=on&older_than=&keywords=on&type=AND).

If you don't do this, they will still count for this challenge, but they won't show up in that gallery and they won't show up in a search using the keyword.

Thank you to everyone who has participated.  We still have one more day to go.  I haven't done any of the challenges yet (except my own sample cards).  It looks like it's the Second Chance Challenge for me!

Ok, here is my finished card... well except for a sentiment which I always leave off until I decide what to use the card for.

Shadow Daisy (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=634&message_id=8e980111ff0f1e94718b890bf10e2e46&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

I stamped my image with white Brilliance. Then I colored it with Inktense pencils. Added the dotted lines around the outside then rounded the bottom corners.

I thought it still needed something so I found my gold sticker bee and added it.

This was a fun challenge!

Edited! I had another thought on my bee! So I am changing my card yet again. When it's finished I will replace the picture. I am putting the bee on acrylic and fussy cutting him, then bending and making his wings stick up.

Daria, I used Avery Elle white pigment ink.  It actually dries quickly, but my Versamarker must be really juicy because if I got it on the white ink at all, the ink rewet and stuck on the tip of my marker.  That is why I just drew that off on my hand.  I actually like my Avery Elle inkpad better after this challenge.

And TY for letting me know I had the code wrong fro your challenge.  I fixed it and it shows up now.

Jan, when I saw those birch trees, I thought you'd used the stamp I've picked out to add to my Wish List--by Taylored Expressions.  I was surprised to see that you'd used a stencil!  Great job with the markings and shading.  Thank you for that tip to prolong the life of the marker's tip.  I'm glad it enabled you to finish outlining the moose.  I always think of you when I see images that make me think of Alaska's wildlife.

Thank you for playing.

I am so glad we have tags, b/c when I first clicked on Jan's link here in the thread, it took me to her acrylic swirly mixed media card; then just now it took me to her ATC challenge card!  I was going to ask what her card looks like so I could look for it, but then I remembered the tag assignments!  and I searched in the search box for the tag name and it worked!

Melissa, thank you for sharing both of those cards.  I couldn't see the outlining on the whale card, but I could see it on the birdhouse card.  Is it fairly obvious on the whale card in real life?  I haven't tried the technique on anything that dark yet.  Both cards look great.

I know what you mean about the keywords.  Being able to search for those in the gallery is a huge help.

Thank you for playing.

You're right Daria, the outline is kinda hard to see on the screen---I had to turn my brightness up on the laptop and then I mainly see it at the top of the whale's head and his tail.

The funny thing is, is that I suppose the outline is obvious in real life, but I feel like over the past couple of days that the outline is not as dark as the first day I did it…but it IS still there, so maybe I just got used to it???    ???

I have one whale stamping I was playing with to just add the outline to one side of the whale stamp…I'll try to get a photo to show that one later!

Melissa, that's an easy way of getting a more natural shadow.  I was thinking of that when I first saw this technique.  I'm glad it shows up in real life.  I'll have to try it on some other papers.  The VersaMark does lighten up when it's dry, but it shouldn't change after that.

Here is one of the other whale stamping I did and I only outlined the bottom to show dimension that I was mentioning earlier today.

Sarah, I'm so glad you managed to participate in this challenge.  I saw your card last night and left a comment in the gallery.  I must have been really tired because I thought I came back here to comment too; but there's nothing here.  I must have been dreaming.  Thank you for playing.  Love your card!

OK.  Now I'm going to start writing out names to go into the straw hat.  Darn.  Heidi just went somewhere.  Should I wait for to get back or just draw the winning name myself?  I'll wait a little while, but if she doesn't return soon, I'll just shake up those names and draw one.  I always fold them into little tiny pieces so they bounce around in the hat like little balls.  No way to see the names.  lol.

;D  We trust you Daria!  But then Heidi has been doing your drawings for so many years ... we wouldn't want her to feel left out!  At least you don't have to wake her up this time!

Lol!!  oh my I totally forgot you have a helper when you draw your names Daria-----I was thinking "Where did Heidi (howdyheidi) go?  Is she offline---do we all need to be online for Daria to draw a name?" LOL!!  "Or is Daria talking about Heidi's name on a piece of paper and maybe it fell out of the hat and she's waiting for it to get back in??"  oh my! lol!!  Too funny!  my brain sometimes!   :D  :laughhard:

Melissa, thanks for the laugh!

Cindi, not only did I not have to wake her up this time, but she got up and went to exercise class with me this morning right after I posted the Second Chance Challenge.  But the second we got back home, she was out the door. I suspect it was a McDonald's breakfast for her today.

As soon as she came in, I started shaking the hat, making those little pieces of paper bounce around.  Heidi still put her hand in there and stirred them up.  She always does that, and I laughed about it.  She drew a name and handed it to me.  I unfolded it and immediately thought, "How do you do that!?"  Can you guess whose name she drew first?  And for the second winner, she drew . . .

OK.  I know.  You want to know who won the RAKs.  Now don't get too excited because I haven't even bought them yet.  Well, I did buy something for a present for a friend in case what I ordered for her didn't show up on time, but it did.  So now I have a really cool gift that I was planning to keep.  Do I want to part with it?  Hmmm.

Oh,  I still haven't mentioned the names that were drawn, have I?

Congratulations, Nora!  You owe Heidi a piece of your great banana bread or one of your homemade chocolate chip cookies--any kind of pay-off will do.  lol.

I suppose now you want to know whose name was drawn second.

Sarah, if you've moved since the last time, please send me your address.  Nora, I know where you live; I could find your place in my sleep!

Congratulations, Ladies, and thank you to everyone who participated.  I love the way some of you played even if you didn't have a VersaMark pen and appreciated the tips that were posted.

Lol!  That was great Daria!  You should get into story telling!  I sure enjoyed it.

Congratulations Sarah and Nora!  and thank you Daria for hosting this challenge.  I am so glad for another option for the Versamark pen and it is a neat technique.

And congrats to Nora S.

Daria - your announcement post was too funny and thanks for hosting.  It got me to use my much neglected embossing pen.

Daria, I am so excited!  I definitely will have some banana bread or chocolate chip cookies for Heidi!!!!  Too funny!

Being away from home for most of the week, I was happy to be able to participate in the two challenges I was able to do before going away.

I Thank You so much for your fun challenge, and also congratulations to Sarah!

LOL, Daria! You are such a sketch, pal! Loved your 'winners post'! I took breaks while waiting for each line to reveal itself. It was like watching one of those pesky game shows. You know there'll be a commercial before the winner is announced.

Since your challenge remains on my to-do list, I'm going to review both this thread & all the entries to assist me in conquering it--sans pen!

Ditto-ing others for a fun challenge, pal!

I just found another example of this technique using outline stamps, and it looks fabulous.  Check this out:

There's a video tutorial there too.
