Title: Stashbuster Challenge 2022
Post by: howdyheidi on May 04, 2022, 12:41:56 PM
I don’t know who might want to play a long but I was thinking of making a challenge out of using up our stash.  For example, this week, I picked out an old mostly-used package of 6x6 patterned paper and I am currently working on using it all up.  I have made 5 cards so far, and have several more to make.

One could also take out a pack of embellishments, glossy paper, anything you can use up (so not stamps, or stencils since we tend to keep those forever #> ). You can even take out a stack of backgrounds or half made projects you have, and use that for your stashbuster item.

If you need to work on Christmas cards, choose something from the category that is Christmas related.  Anything you make using the stash you want to use up, you can link here.

Any takers?

I think I understand what you are saying, I like using up those paper packs that are almost gone :). I am busy right now trying to get my 6 card commitment done for Splitcoast but after that I could do a few cards

That’s fine!  No time limit on this one!

I would love to play along!

Hopefully things calm down around here.  My Mom is still in the hospital, but I need to at least try to take a little bit of time to do something fun.  Less surfing the internet to decompress, more crafting.

I've been watching MayMayMadeIt's videos, especially the Mystery ones.  Can always use that technique on old paper.  I also have a BUNCH of SU Paper Pumpkin kits.  They are quick projects.  I should just finally make them up.  I'll gain some shelf space where the boxes are stacked.  Either of those ideas should work good for me because little to no decision making involved, just what I need right now!

Thanks Heidi!

Great!  Glad to hear you will play along. I know you have tons going on and you might not have time for a while. that is no problem! Although, yes, those paper pumpkin kits could be a really good distraction for you! One thing I thought of is using up more supplies from some card kits I have.

As I am keeping on with my project, and organizing my desk, I keep finding other packs of half done projects that I could use for this challenge!  It is amazing how many of those have built up over time!

Since I can’t post these in the gallery, I will link to my blog for now:

First two cards:  http://mylittlestampingblog.blogspot.com/2022/05/mothers-day-bear-hug-card-using-up.html

Second 3 cards: http://mylittlestampingblog.blogspot.com/2022/05/patterned-paper-challenge-post-two.html

I know some of you already commented on my blog, so this is redundant for you. But I do want to keep track of my progress also.

Great!  I was thinking of having this challenge for the calendar year.

Another idea is if you are like me, I went through my piles and found around 20 unfinished cards!  Seriously!  A few of them are finished except for a sentiment. And many were layouts completed but with no stamped images or anything.  So those will be next on my list after I finish this patterned paper pack.

Your card is so pretty!  The paper strips in this arrangement is just perfect! I may have to try that. I also like how you embossed the card front.  Your flowers are colored very beautifully too!

Here is a stash buster video from MayMay Made It.
In this one she is trying to use up paper scraps by prepping little gift card holders, boxes, etc that can be pre-assembled, store flat and then you just do a little bit of gluing when the time comes that you need it.

Give Handmade (https://youtu.be/WP6XHXpZTgA)

I'll look for some of her other
Mystery" videos too, cutting paper that is too pretty to cut without looking!

Awesome stash busters Heidi!  I love those bear hug cards, such a cute stamp!
You know I always like your layouts.
Congrats on getting those pre-stamped images on to a finished card, yay!

I too have old, old 6x6 pads.

The video I linked in the post above is geared more toward 12x12 or 81/2 x 11 paper.  Of course I have those too.

Here are 3 more cards.  I have more ready that I need to photograph.

I may be able to get photos to upload on a computer, but I usually use my ipad for everything.  It says the file type is wrong.

I will check out May May Made it!

I also have 12 x 12 papers.  Not as much as my 6x6 pads, but I got in the habit of buying it from CTMH since they have such cute papers! And too cute to use sometimes!   :laughhard:

Here are two of the MayMay Made It videos I spoke about ... for paper that is just too pretty to cut!
She flips it over and cuts without looking and the results are awesome.

"Mystery Cards" (https://youtu.be/lzFvpjkA_PI)using 12x12 papers

I don't know why but I can sit and watch her do this over and over!  I need to get out some paper and cut, ha!

She tried the same technique with 12x12 Mintay paper and a 49 & Market album.  And it works!
"Mystery Album" (https://youtu.be/emKBhmTsoZ0)

I hope this helps you bust your paper stash!

I used scraps from Echo Park, Lori Whitlock, This and That Graceful 6x6 pad.
The card design idea came from one of MayMay (https://youtu.be/_Nlo1OEUqII) Made Its stash busting videos.  Her cards went faster.   Using multiple colors of ink on the front, and especially die cutting the sentiment and the mat for the sentiment slowed me down, but I'm happy with the result.

I made a total of 12 A2 landscape cards.  The front of the card is cut short by 3/4 of an inch.  The pp strip (1 inch) along the bottom is adhered to the inside of the card and shows to the front.

I need to come up with layouts that use more paper!  Ha!  Twelve 1 inch strips and sentiment flags didn't make a huge dent.  Oh well.  I need Thank You cards!

Printed Paper : Echo Park
Stamps : Thank You is Dare2BArtsy, sentiment strip is Taylored Expressions, unknown flourish from a set called Bold Flowers (Fiskars maybe?)
Dies :  Taylored Expressions Simple Strips and Simple Strips Backer
Inks : Versafine Onyx Black, Wendy Vecchi Archival Leaf Green

Thanks for the challenge Heidi.  I hope to do more.

Title: Re: Stashbuster Challenge 2022
Post by: Iring on June 05, 2022, 10:53:08 PM
Thanks Connie!  If it wasn't for those sub-sentiment strips they would have been pretty quick to make.  They are on a big stamp full of sentiment strips, there is a die that cuts the whole thing in to many strips.  Then another die that cuts the mats.  Since I made my cards all using the same sentiment I put a scrap of paper behind just the mat I wanted 12 times.  Now that I think about it, I could have just cut strips of paper on my trimmer and hand cut the dove-tail, probably a lot faster, or left the mat rectangular.  Oh well, I have lots of sentiments stamped and cut now.

Somehow I cut two extra cards yesterday with the same shortened front flap.  Today I finished them using more of the same 6x6 pp pad.
This time I added printed paper to the top, 2 more pieces gone, ha!

The green card uses a flower from the TH ephemera pack, Field Notes.  I added pink stickles to the flower, then patted some of it off because I wanted it to be more transparent.  Washi tape along the front, top edge is 49 & Market assorted stitch set.  Die sentiment is Die-Versions.

On the second card I saved the front from a card I messed up when I stamped the inside.  Cut it down and placed on more patterned paper.  The butterfly and mushroom are from the same TH ephemera pack.  I added sparkle pen to the butterfly.

There is still quite a bit of paper in this 6x6 pack ...  you will probably be seeing more of it!
Thanks again for this challenge Heidi!

Good morning.
I'm still staring at the same paper pack and trying to get motivated to make Father's Day cards.
I have to admit, the thought has occurred to me to just throw the rest of it away, but there is still some cool paper in it.
That's one way of stash busting, right?  Toss or donate?   HaHa! You don't find too many youtube videos demonstrating that technique!

I finished one more card and 90% of another last night while watching the College Softball World Series.  When I look at one of them this morning, I think my head was on a little crooked again.

I think I'll leave it for a bit and come back to it later.

I had to laugh about your head being crocked, when I cut anything in half for hubby and I to share I can never get it in half, it is always off, he said how in the world do you make your cards and they turn out and I say I really have no idea but some of them aren't always straight ;)

You are hilarious!  I have thrown out (recycled) a couple pieces of paper of the years that I knew I would never use.  There are some in my scrapbooking papers with huge sayings on them that are unusable unless you just framed them.  I am thinking of putting all those 12x12’s together and donating them (once I am finished with the scrapbooks).  Some are even too garish for any envelope!

This past year I made gift bags from Utube.  And I used those huge 12 by 12 fancy papers with huge words or pictures.  I was so pleased cause I couldn’t think of anywhere to use them, and they made really pretty bags!

Gift bags are a great idea Yankee.  I think Maymay has a video for that too.  Although ... it would feel funny making gift bags after the reams of gift bags we just donated to the Humane Society thrift shop!  Mom had quite the collection, and I admit, I have plenty too.  Mom had under bed plastic totes (Rubbermaid?) for storing gift wrap.  We donated an entire tote of Christmas wrap and another of all other occasions.  We took a quick peek, but my sister and I have plenty of our own gift wrap!  I kept some cute little envelopes that had a tree scene on them and my sister took one little pack of gift tags that were Victorian dolls.  She went through a bag of gift bags and found a gift card that got left behind.  Score!

I was just watching a video where the girl uses the backside (white side) of her pattern paper that she doesn't like to use on her gelli plate instead of printer paper, I love that idea because there are pieces that I wouldn't use on a card, I usually use them for envelopes but there are usually pieces left over even after that I could use, I like the thicker weight of pattern paper too for the gelli plate, a lot of my printer paper ones curl so much.

Totally Tiffany sells paper crafting storage and advocates for making an index of all of your supplies.  She uses white backsides of printed paper for indexing her stamps.  She uses 12x12 to fit more stamps (or die cuts) per page ... but that means you have to have a 12x12 binder to put them in.  I started an index on normal letter size computer paper so I could use your average ring binder.  It's already very thick!  I'm going to have to split it up between two.

Two more cards made with that same pack of Echo Park "This & That".
Another thank you card and a birthday card.

Thank you sentiment Tayolored Expressions, TH butterfly.

The circus theme stamp I think is a $1 stamp, inside says "life is a circus" and "happy birthday".
The outside sentiment is Unity.  The diamond die is TH/Sizzix.

I should probably index mine but I have all my stamps and dies in categories so I can "usually" find what I am looking for, LOL!

Love these cards, I like the staggered strips on the first and that butterfly is so pretty and like how you used solid cardstock on the front of the second and have the pattern paper peeking out, fun stamp too!

Made some Father's Day cards for my sons-in-law using backgrounds in my stash.
One is alcohol ink on glossy paper.  The other is ?? alcohol ink on Neenah?  Was that a challenge?  A Zoom?
I should write something on the back!

TH/Sizzix die in the corner
Ellen Hutson grill
Unity sentiment.
Inside has "Happy Fathers Day" with a hot dog on a stick stamped next to it.

I made these cards in plenty of time, then proceeded to forget to mail them!   Going out today.  There is still a lot going on around here.  That is my excuse and I'm sticking with it!

I didn't get that far with the indexing ... it's kind of overwhelming.  The idea is that your index tells you where to look, and it can be anywhere.  Not sure I like that, but it keeps you from constantly rearranging when you outgrow a category.  For example, all stamps would be stored together and you add the newest to the end of the stash with whatever the next number is ... instead of going to file it with "florals", finding that your floral container is full and needing another container.  Because who would think of purging anything to make it fit, right?!

I have my embossing folders stored together, numbered and made crayon rubbings for the index.
A small portion of stamps are indexed and point me to whether they are wood block in a cabinet, SU on a bookshelf or clear/cling in bins.  My dies, I have put pictures of most in a folder in Dropbox so I if I'm in a store I can look to make sure I don't already own it!
Of course, I am not completely caught up in any category!

Father's Day for DH

Used a piece of yellow marbled glossy printed paper in my stash.
Stamps are SU
Die is Sizzix

I used a few of the stars that fell out on the inside of the card, along with a stamp of pilot goggles that came in the set.

Cindi the cards for your son in laws look great, love those Alcohol backgrounds.  I have done a couple of cards like that I have been ahead in my birthday cards and still have got some out late.  I hadn't heard of dropbox, I am using Tim's app for all the items from him but it would be nice to have something for everything else.  I do have it all written in a small binder but I usually don't have that in store with me.
Your hubby's card looks great too, perfect for him.  I made one for Greg this year, it is from Opie and Buttons so he should get a kick out of it :)

Connie and Cindi, your cards look great! I have the stars die, the diamonds die and the other one you use, Cindi. I have my stamps in categories too, but I did have to get an extra box for flowers and birds. I have been doing some purging, so I had a box left over for me to put the overflow in.
