Title: Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge – 2022
Post by: djc on June 30, 2022, 05:58:38 PM
Well, it’s time to get those Christmas cards going if you haven’t already made a bunch.  I’ve been stitching to keep myself sane the past couple of months so I have a lot of backgrounds ready to go.  I’m hoping to turn many of them into Christmas cards this month.

You guys made a ton of Christmas cards in July last year so, hopefully, this will be another productive month.  Last year, the cards ended up in two files, Christmas in July and Christmas All Year 2021.  This year, we have just one album for this challenge, and Sadie has already set it up for us.

If you looking for inspiration, check out Cindi’s past Christmas All Year threads; she posts an optional theme each month that you can use if it inspires you.

The Challenge:
You have a full month--July 1 through July 31--to post your entries.  Please post your cards in the Winter Holiday Cards in July 2022 album and link your cards to this Discussion Thread.  The challenge ends on July 31 at 11:59 pm your time.  If they are in the right album when I check the morning of August 1, they will count.

Remember you must enter only new cards--nothing you posted prior to July 1, the first day of the challenge.  If you have a special technique you'd like to use that does not include stamping, your card will still count.  It would be nice to combine stamping with other techniques, but sometimes that isn't feasible, and I want your cards to be something you will love.  Therefore, your paste-embossed, embroidered, stenciled, Iris folded, die-cut, etc. cards are welcome.

Requirements:
1. Complete the tasks as described in this challenge.

2. When you post your card in the gallery, please label it with the name of the appropriate holiday and add the words "in July." For example, Christmas in July, Hanukkah in July, Kwanzaa in July, etc.

3. When you post your project in the gallery, please describe it. Tell how you made it and what you used.  Some information that you could share:
Stamps:
Cardstock/Papers:
Card Size:
Inks/Coloring Medium:
Accessories:
Technique:

Next, come back to this Discussion Thread to link your post here and to tell us how it went—tips to help us or advice so we can avoid or fix problems.

Prize:
There will be a prize awarded at the end of the challenge.  Your name will go into the hat once for every card you post in the gallery and link to the discussion thread. OK. I already know that the next question is do I get my name in the hat 10 times if I make 10 of the same card. I'll say you can get your name in the hat up to three times for multiples of the same design. Fair enough? There's no limit to the number of different cards you can post. You'll get credit for each different card.

I hope you'll join us and begin making your December holiday cards.  I love seeing the cards you post every year.  Hopefully, we can inspire and motivate each other.  Don't forget to have fun!

Daria

ETA:  Signing into the gallery is really super easy.  Just click on "Register" which is next to the "log-in" tab.  Follow the directions.

I clicked on "Remember Me," but you don't have to if you don't mind logging in each time you go there.  When I registered, it said I'd get an email and I just needed to click on the link there to be able to log in.  Cindi told me she got that email; I never did.  However, I was able to log in a few hours later.  Maybe Sadie worked some magic behind the scenes?  Give it a try.

I’m so glad we are doing this challenge again this year! I have not made many Christmas cards this year yet. I need to get out my supplies and decide where to start!

Also, I cannot believe it is July already!!!!

Thank you for the challenge, Daria!!!

I meant to post this card for the June challenge but forgot so I am starting the month off with this card.  The base was cut from pattern paper, Cindi's option for June was to use colored cardstock but I kept thinking we have so many pattern papers that are quite thick, that could be used for a card base and we can use up more of our 12x12 papers too, so that is what I used.
The berries are a layered stamp set from the Greetery, I did have trouble lining up those little berries but the rest went pretty well, I just stamped two on top of one another, the jar is a stamp from another company.  After finishing it and going to find a sentiment, I thought you know this could go for a winter birthday card too, so that is why I used the sentiment I went with, figured it could go either way depending on what I need at the time :)

April, I just saw your two cards in the gallery.  Both are wonderful.  The first card you posted makes me want to check out my embossing folders.  I also have the kraft core cardstock.

Thanks for playing.

I made some progress today.  I finished my design team cards, so I was free to start organizing Christmas stuff. I think I got out all my Christmas stamps, papers and so on.  I even made one card!  It is pretty simple but a good start.  I also found a little bag with some half done cards in them, so I will work on those next.

I still need to set up my gallery login so I will work on that too.  Hoping to photograph and post my card by tomorrow.

Good for you, Heidi.  That's a good way to start.  Don't you love when you find card parts just waiting to become cards?  When I used up my stash and wasn't making cards, that's what I did.  I knew I had a lot of backgrounds, but I hadn't realized that I also had some images that were already colored.  Problem solved.

I'm still stitching.  I am also slowly building up my supply of the die-cut I want to use and layering that so it will be ready to go.

Daria, I’m so glad you’re hosting this challenge again!  We’re on vacation this week so I won’t be able to start until next week, but I’ll try to keep up with the gallery.

I love what I’ve seen so far!

Heidi, I don’t have any Kitchen Sink stamps.  I love all the detail in that bulb and the fonts for the sentiments are really nice too.  Where do you find that brand?

Connie, your layered berries are beautiful too.  I didn’t think I’d have patience for layered stamps but now I’m thinking I should try again.  I love the jar you put them in!

April, so many clever ways to use that cat in the window stamp!  Nice job!

Daria, keep stitching!  It’s nice to have a stash of ready to use backgrounds!  I should have thought to bring some pieces to stitch on vacation.  Would travel well I bet.  I brought the leftover yarn from the baby blanket, thinking I might make our granddaughter a blanket for her doll.

We’re lucky to have both of our daughters, sons in law and grandkids here with us and MIL too.  She’s happily holding Kason while he naps.  We’re in Siesta Key, FL.  I haven’t gotten out yet but DH and SIL went out to get mini donuts this morning and they were warm!  They watched them being made!  I bet we have more donuts in our future!

Heidi, I am glad you were able to sign onto the gallery and post your first card.  Kitchen Sink Stamps is new to me.  I need to check them out.  Love the card.
Cindi, I look forward to seeing your cards when you are home and have time to make cards.  Enjoy your holiday.
April, All four of your cards are wonderful.  I love that patterned paper,  I looked for it, but it looks like that one might be retired already.  I did do a search for your Penguin.  He definitely is retired.  Darn.  I'll keep an eye out on eBay for him.

Thank you all for playing.

Daria, I have been using older stamps from the now debunked stamp companies of Just For Fun and Sparkle N Sprinkle. I forget to use these stamps, so I have pulled them out for this year.

Thanks for playing.

i haven’t gotten any more cards done this past week.  Kitchen Sink stamps has been around a long time.  They may have been doing layering stamps before anyone else did.  I think they are usually pretty easy to line up and I like how they give some color suggestions for the layers.  I’m glad everyone likes the bulb stamp!  They often have sales so if you are interested in them, sign up for their emails to get a notification when they have a sale code!

Here's my first Christmas card.   Yay!

Marianne Designs Christmas Stitching Border (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=5816&message_id=6646f2fe09993cc950c764bc066f0b35&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

Using metallic threads is a pain in the neck.  The only advice I can offer is don't use very long strands of it, and keep a firm hold on the last stitched placed as you stitch the next one.  I had to check online to see cards made with this design.  It wasn't easy to see where one petal ended and another began.  They overlap a bit.

My month is not going great and I am not getting the cards done that I wanted to.  My grandpa went on hospice this week and passed last night.  I do still hope to get to some Christmas cards and be ahead of the game this year.  Just wanted to give an update on why I’ve been absent.

Daria, would running the thread through some wax help, I have seen others do that with some threads but I think it is to make them stiffer, and that is probably not what you need. I have only worked with it once and I had a hard time also!

Heidi I am so sorry for your loss of your grandpa.

Heidi, I'm so sorry to hear about your grandfather.

Connie, thanks for that tip.  I had heard about using wax on fussy floss to tame it down and almost ordered some, but then I read some advice that said to never do that.  I forget the reason.  I'm not sure it would work on metallic thread which is already super smooth and slick.  It might help to minimize fraying.

Jennifer McGuire has a new video out where she talks more about stitching.  I'm going to try what she said to do with metallic threads.  She threads her needle and has the loose ends at the tail of the thread and the needle where the loop is.  That way the needle can't slide off the thread (which happens a lot), and the loose threads can be taped to the back of the cardstock so they don't fray (which also happens a lot).  I use two strands of metallic thread so this would work perfectly.  You still need to hold the last stitch firmly while you stitch the next stitch.

I wish I had seen the video before starting my second piece.  It's all done except for the flower.  Now, I'll have to make a third card so I can try out Jennifer's suggestion.  I'll let you know how that turns out.

I always tape my thread down to the back of my stitching, unless I do cross stitching, some times I actually work the thread into the stitches, I haven't seen that stitching one Jennifer has done, hope you have good luck trying it

Connie, I also start by taping down my thread.  For some reason, I remembered a recommendation to secure the thread by putting the loop on the bottom and then putting your first stitch through it.  That does work, but it was definitely not the way to go with metallic thread.  I am now doing what Jennifer suggested, and it is so much better.

I just saw your cards in the gallery and left comments there.  I have never heard of the Hot Off the Press cards for coloring.  Pretty cool!  You did a great job coloring them.  Beautiful work.

Connie,  this conversation led me to hunt through my computer for some images I bought several years ago.  The attraction was that the artist had a video for each of the twelve Christmas scenes.  I thought I would enjoy watching the videos and trying to use the images for Christmas cards.  The images turned out a lot bigger than I realized--full page size, and I couldn't resize them.  The video also showed her adding color to the full-sized image.  Now, I think I know how to resize them, but it took me forever to find them.  I was surprised at all the things that were hidden away in the corners of the computer!

Well, once I  found the images and saved them where I could locate them more easily, I started looking for the videos.  That was another adventure, but I did find them!  Yay!

I have finished seven of the Marianne Designs Christmas Border card I posted a few days ago.  I made two more trying to figure out what worked best for me.  I just posted another photo in the gallery of the first three cards I made.  They all have different amounts of red cardstock showing at the bottom.  Maybe this will help you decide which you prefer.  I also wanted to post some tips that helped me to make this card and would work for any border-die card.  The final four cards have just a smidgen more red at the bottom than the third card.

Connie, you did a great job with all three cards.  I loved the ornament you stamped and colored.  I am very impressed with the one you created yourself.  I have a die for an ornament with that shape that I've never used.  I saw someone who created a scene for a similar ornament, and now you have that sweet image in yours.  I need to use mine!

I am working on my Christmas cards.  In the process, I find that I have to organize my supplies to make them easier to find them.  Sigh.

Thanks Daria.  I did that a couple years ago when I started making my Christmas cards all year long.  Now I know that all my Christmas stamps are in one bin, my papers in another, my dies in another ect. Right down to my gems, ribbons and such, makes it easier to work on cards every month, I pull the stuff out and work on the cards and then put them away until the next month :)

My Christmas stamps, dies, and embossing folders are in their own spaces.  That part is OK.  What's taking me so long is choosing cardstock to use to mat the stitched panels I've been making.  I have way too much cardstock.  The cardstock is sorted by color and by size.  I still have a lot of 12x12 as well as the 8 1/2 x 11 that I usually go to first.  I also have some sections that have various colors of unknown cardstock given to me by others and some SU cardstock.  Those have been mixed together somehow.  Sigh.  Within each section, the cardstock has gotten mixed up.  It started out with the same shades together and a folder with samples of each so that I could choose a color without going through the whole stack.  Now, I'm pulling out one section at a time and reorganizing that section.

The good thing is that I have discovered some real prizes--gorgeous patterned papers I forgot I had.  I had put them there so they'd be safer than the run-of-the-mill patterned papers I mostly used to use to make envelopes.   When I was going through the stack that had unknown sourced cardstock, I hit the jackpot.  I was able to find mats for almost all my stitched panels.  The colors are more vivid than the ones I bought so long ago, and they worked very well.  Some panels that I wasn't crazy about, look great now that they have a mat.  There was one stitched panel for which I just couldn't find a mat I liked.  I ended up cutting a white mat and using a Tombow marker to color around the edge.  Looks great.  I should have just bought white paper.  Then I wouldn't have all that colored cardstock that I actually had to dust!

I now have two dozen stitched panels ready to be matted.  I only matted five before running out of glue.  Some should arrive today.  I do have glue, but I'm not sure what would work well to adhere a stitched panel to cardstock.  The card bases are finished.  The embellishments are ready.

I'm not going to even think about the other thirty-eight panels I stitched.  (Stitching them while watching the news is keeping me sane.)  At least, the cardstock will be in order so it won't be so hard to find a good mat for each of them.  That is going to be an ongoing process.

Daria

Wow you are much better organized then I am, my card stock is all over and everything is mixed, that is why you never see me tell what card stock I use on a project, I have no idea.  that is great you found matches for them, wow you sure have been very busy stitching. I am so thankful for this hobby, it is my therapy that is for sure.

We have two more days left in this challenge.  I know that some people are still having trouble accessing the gallery.  If you can't log into the gallery, you could post your cards here in the forum.  Right below this box is a button that looks like this:  +Attachments and other options.  Click on that.  You'll be able to upload your photos here.

Good luck.

Wow Daria!  You've been really busy!  Yay you!  Your cards are beautiful.  All of them.  I was really drawn to the trees on cool blues in the last picture but I really do like all of them.

Finally!  I stamped and colored 2 amaryllis!  Not how I originally intended, for some reason today I felt like using Neocolor II to color.

Don't know why I've been resisting watercoloring?  Maybe because I haven't done it in so long?

I tried two methods for coloring the pistils, yes I googled pistils vs stamen and I think the "button" tips are pistils, ha!

I'd like to do more with this stamp and die set.  There are several sentiments and I can play with die cutting the flower and using different backgrounds.  For today, just these two!

Anyone have a good suggestion for the pistils?  So far I tried enamel accents and sparkle pop pen.  Maybe an adhesive pen and foil?

Thanks for the challenge and I'm sorry it took me so long to produce anything.  I started choosing cardstock colors for another card.  DH is flying tomorrow, I hope to make Christmas cards while he's out!

wow that is a lot of stitching Daria but wow they make terrific cards with all that texture, the die cut is so great with them.  Great job matching your paper to the stitching

Connie and Cindi, thank you for your kind words about my cards.

Cindi, your cards are so beautiful!  Why do you say they aren't watercolored?  You used watercolor crayons and used a water brush to blend the color.  That's watercoloring.
The second I saw your cards, my first thought was that the watercoloring was lovely.  I'm glad you were able to post a card to the challenge.

Wow, Daria! That is a lot of stitching! Beautiful cards. I have enjoyed seeing everyone's cards too. This is always a great challenge.

Hmm, I guess because I didn't get my pan watercolors out, which is what I had intended, I didn't feel like I was watercoloring.  You're right though, I used a brush, dipped it in water and spread water soluble crayon.  Thanks!  I'm glad they look watercolored, that is what I was going for, ha!

I did get a card made just now.  Very simple but I am happy to be moving in the right direction in time.

I will need to go back and read this thread and also look at all your cards!

Heidi, I love your card.  I'm a coffee drinker and the patterned papers you used on the paper cup made me think of Aspen and skiing.  Of course, I would be sitting by a roaring fire sipping my coffee.

Don't you love it when you find something you've already started or a component that is just waiting to be put on a card?  I do.

Thank you for playing.

I played around with different ways to color my Amaryllis stamp today, still using Neocolor II crayons.  I'm so glad I picked them up on sale when I worked at the Art and Party supply store years ago!  About time I use them again.

I have a total of 5 completely finished cards, down to the verse on the inside and signature on the back.  WooHoo!

Amaryllis cards 3, 4 and 5 (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5833#top_display_media)

I hope to continue playing with this stamp set.

I also finished picking my cardstock colors for a card that uses a rainbow of colors.  I had to pick 16 colors!  I'm hoping to get at least one card to the finished stage to post tonight.  We'll see.  I scored enough card bases and embossed front panels for 5 copies.

I think I've seen and commented on all of the Christmas cards in the gallery.  I'd still like to read through the posts in this thread.  This was just the push I needed to get started on my Christmas cards.  I don't know why I'm better at working at Daria's challenge than my own?!

Who else will be up late with me making Christmas cards tonight?

I did it!  One more card!

I've been wanting to make multiples of this card and I just didn't have time last year.  It is not a quick card, but I have a start.  I've prepared enough trees, card bases and embossed layers to make 4 more and enough paper to keep going if I have the stamina, ha!  One of the hardest parts is done, selecting 16 colors of card stock!

As I said in my gallery description, I think this was my favorite card sent last year and I gave it to my Mom.  Of course you know, she saved all my cards, so I got it back to help me re-create it!

I really do love these trees.  I cut some large trees in small tree colors, oops, so I have extras to play with in another layout.  I think that will be fun too ... to make some cards that don't use so many trees.

Thanks again for the challenge.  My favorite time of year!  A little slow this year with only 6 cards completed, but I'll take it.

Daria mentioned the embossing folder I used on my Bottle Brush card in her comment.  I've been organizing embossing folders lately.  This is the only slimline EF I own.  I don't make that many slimline cards.  I didn't buy it right away.  It's pretty simple and I remember thinking I could create stripes like this with my score board.  Months later I caved and bought it.  With all of the steps involved in this card, making card bases, die cutting and gluing I am so glad I bought the folder!

Good for you, Cindi!  I love your cards.  It will be fun to make more of the Bottle Brush Tree cards--so colorful.  I can sympathize with figuring out which cardstock to use.

I agree.  When you are mass producing something, using an embossing folder to quickly do what would take forever with a scoreboard makes sense.  Today, I made the inserts for the Christmas cards I've made so far.  I was cutting them one at a time on my regular trimmer and then realized that I could do several of them at once on my old Boston guillotine cutter. I was using index weight cardstock since the cards were already bulky with the stitching so I could easily cut four at a time on the big old trimmer--worked great and was so much faster.

Good night.

Good morning.  I thought I'd be here earlier, but I was watching Foiling Friday, and the video was almost an hour long!  Kari Vannoy was focusing on Deco's Transfer Gel Duo.  What makes Duo different from the original transfer gel is that you can use it to foil with or without a laminator.  However, she did it exactly once without the laminator, and the result was less than stellar.  The rest of the time she used the laminator.  Lots of nice stencils, tons of beautiful foils, and some good tips.

Anyway.  Here I am.

I went through the gallery and counted the cards.  I went through the forum and counted the cards.  So many wonderful Christmas cards.  I'm delighted that this year, even I made lots of cards.  Hmm.  My 25 stitched background cards would have only counted for 3, and my seven stitched poinsettia cards would have only counted for 3.  I may have to reconsider that next year.  lol.

As you know, I wrote your names down on slips of paper (April was on half of them!), folded the slips of paper in half and again in thirds (I had a hard time opening them.), put them in my straw hat (yes, it is back in the house but never to be worn again (Who knew you couldn't leave it smashed up in the car without it totally losing its shape?), and walked to Heidi's room shaking that hat all the way making your names bounce around in that hat.  Heidi's a trooper.  She is used to me waking her up.  She just rolled over and drew the first name.  I opened it.  Then she reached in and drew the second name.  Thank you, Heidi.

Now for the reveal.

April and Cindi, if you haven't changed them, I have your email addresses.  Your prize is a gift card to the craft store of your choice.  Please send me a private message with your choice.

I hope I do better than I did last year.  I ended up sending myself a gift card!

Take your time, Cindi.  It makes sense to get a card toward something on your wish list.

I already did some damage shopping in the past week or so.  lol.
