Title: INK15--Bisque Pottery Technique--Winner Announced
Post by: djc on October 17, 2015, 01:27:17 PM
Welcome to Inktoberfest 2015.  I have a technique challenge for you—the Bisque Technique.  It has been around for a while, but I’ve never used it even though I love the way it looks.  It is very similar to the Letterpress Technique that Cindi featured in her All Year Christmas Challenge in March.  However, instead of inking up the side of the embossing folder that has the raised design, you ink up the side that has the recessed design.  Instead of coloring the debossed image, you will have colored the background.

Diana Gibbs has a Video Tutorial (http://dianagibbs.typepad.com/stampin_with_di/2010/10/bisque-pottery-technique.html) to help you out with this simple technique.  Be sure to read the comments posted to this thread.  Participants have posted great advice for achieving success with this technique.

1.  Choose white or cream cardstock and a neutral or soft color of ink so that your result will resemble bisque china. (Some people had better results with inexpensive paper that was more absorbent than the Neenah Classic Crest that I used, for example, Georgia Pacific.)

2.  Use a brayer to apply water-based ink onto the inside of the embossing folder on the side that has the recessed images.  That is normally the side where the company’s logo is printed.  (Per the posts that follow, other inks work better; try pigment ink including chalk inks; try Memento.)

3.  Lay the cardstock onto the uninked side of the embossing folder so you can move it around without disturbing the inked side.

4.  Close the folder and put it through the Cuttlebug or whatever machine you use.  (I had better results when I put it through the machine very slowly and back again very slowly.)

That’s it.

Tip:  When I tried this, I wasn’t happy with my results.  The ink was splotchy or spotty.  I tried various inks.  I tried different ways of applying the ink to the folder.  Nothing helped.  Yesterday, I gave it one last try.  I applied the ink with a brayer.  I rolled the folder through the Cuttlebug very slowly so that the ink would have a chance to cover the cardstock; then I rolled it very slowly back again.  It worked.  I had a very smooth coverage of ink.

Sample Card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=2039&message_id=3a0348cbc8df9564afc6e63be594eb32&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

•  This challenge will run from Saturday, October 17 through Sunday, October 25.
•   Please post your card in the gallery set aside for Inktoberfest, 2015, and use INK15 Bisque for your keyword and in your title.
•  You may combine this challenge with others if the other hosts/hostesses allows combining.
•  Don’t forget to come back here to leave comments and link to your card.
•  I’ll draw a name from my trusty old hat to determine who will receive a RAK at the end of the challenge.

I hope you enjoy this challenge.

I had seen some really pretty cards completed with the technique but had trouble with inking as you described.  Thanks so much for your continuous testing!  Hope I have time to give it a try!

I have done this technique quite a few times but always had blotchy results but I never ran it through slowly, I will have to give that a try, that may be my problem, I love the look this gives and your example is just Gorgeous!

This is so beautiful!  What a lovely example!

I, too, have always had trouble with any kind of embossing folder-inking techniques. I will try what you described.  I have a very pretty color of pigment ink that is a linen color and I would like to try that one.

Thanks so much for hosting!

Cool technique.  I will definitely have to give it a try.  I'll add you to the cheat sheet.  And just to be sure I get it right, we can only combo with one other challenge?

Heidi, if you use a pigment ink, you'll probably need to clean your folder quickly with stamp cleaner.

Well, I did not have luck, although I also did not have any trouble getting the pigment ink cleaned off the folders. I think it might be that I need to put a shim in for embossing. My cuttlebug is getting a little looser over time.  It also might not have been good folder choice so I will try some more.

ETA:  The pigment ink did have good coverage, but it just didn't take over the whole folder.  It took better around the edges than in the middle. That is why I think it might be the folder or the machine.

My first try came out splotchy.  I used Distress Ink in Shabby Shutters on cream.  I think it would be really pretty if it wasn't splotchy.

And apparently, I've been storing my brayer wrong for years.  I watched the video and she starts with how your supposed to store your brayer.  And she was right, the wheel is a little deformed.  That explains why the dang thing never rolls smoothly.  I guess a new brayer is going on my Christmas wish list.

Sarah, did you roll it through your machine and back again super slowly?

Thanks so much for the challenge Daria, and thanks for the tips on making it work!

I love the bisque pottery/Wedgewood look this gives.  Can't wait to give it a try.

Yep, I actually rolled through, back and through again.  I'm going to try again tomorrow.

Sarah, when I rolled it through, I did it as slowly as possible and still keep the darn thing moving.

Something else--with one that I didn't like, I repeated the steps--reinking the folder and putting the cardstock through again.  You can put the design in the exact same place in the folder.  You'll feel it grab onto the raised areas of the design.  It came out with very irregular striations, and I liked it a lot.  It did not look like bisque, but I liked it anyway.  Try that with your splotchy piece.

Heidi, I also tried shims when I was at Nora's, but I couldn't come up with a combination that worked.

However, your mentioning that made me realize that I'm now using a new machine.  My old one actually came apart the last time I was at Nora's.  We were trying to die cut something.  I had set it up with too many shims; it worked great for a while, and then the side piece came apart.  Even after popping everything back in place, it would open up when I rolled something through.  Maybe I can glue it back together.  (Fortunately, I had one in reserve.  Quite a while ago, I couldn't resist a fabulous sale on the newer blue one--the whole set for the cost of a set of replacement plates.)

I did go really slowly.  But I'll try running it again.  It maybe that my wonky brayer resulted in uneven coverage on the folder and that might have caused the splotches.  I'm definitely going to give it another go.

Really great result with this technique, Daria!

I have tried this technique before but wasn't able to get a clean result, I'm going to give it ago again. Thanks for hosting!

Ok, so I tried inking the folder again and running the same piece back through.  The result - darker splotches.

So then I tried using the ink pad instead of my brayer.  The result - even darker splotches.

But as I was doing it I noticed that the ink was beading up on the folder.  I was using Distress Ink in Shabby Shutters.

So attempt 3 I used chalk ink.  And success.  I really like how that one came out.  And I did another one with a different folder and a different color of chalk ink.  I promise I'll posts picks later today.  My backs bothering me from too much craft time, so I'm taking a break.

Cool, Sarah!  It's good to know that the chalk ink worked.  Plus, Heidi's comments make me think that other pigment inks would work too.

I Googled images for this technique; and when I enlarged them, I noticed that few, if any, had perfectly smooth ink coverage.  Some card makers even call it a "distressed look."  As I mentioned above, one of my pieces that I did over again looks very distressed, and while it's not the look I was going for, I like it a lot.

I used a Halloween embossing folder and used Memento ink.  The first picture shows toffee crunch and the second is potter's clay.  I used the brayer and rolled the folder through twice and there is still blotches here and there. So I just took the itty bitty teardrop ink and swiped it across the embossing folder.  The lightest in each group is the brayer and then they get darker each time I swiped ink and redid it.   I am going to try the chalk ink I have like Craft Nerd did and see if that makes a difference.  Here are the first 7 tries, LOL!  I am putting them here because they are just the first part not the finished project.

You know what, I don't think I have ever tried chalk ink with this type of technique before, so I might try that too.

I also noticed in the video that there was not perfect coverage in that one either.  But it still looked great. In that case, I think that the folder choice makes a difference.

Ok I used memento ink because that was the only one that I have a light color in and this time I ran it through very slowly and I think I got pretty good coverage, I was going for an elegant birthday card and this morning after looking at it I think it looks more like a sympathy card, oh well it needs to go out in the mail tomorrow so that is what I am going with. I have not tried chalk inks either, will have to see what colors I have in my chalk inks to maybe try it again.

I haven't finished a card yet, but here are my various attempts.

The first picture was my first attempt. I used Distress Ink in Shabby Shutters and my brayer.

The second picture was my first attempt run through a second time.

The third picture was my second attempt.  I applied Distress Ink in Shabby Shutters directly on the embossing folder.

The fourth picture was my third attempt, with chalk ink.  I applied Versamagic in Aloe Vera.  It is not showing up very well in the picture.  Since the ink pad is one of those small dew drop pads, I applied it directly to the folder.  I got nice smooth coverage, but there was some ink on the raised portions as well.

I did another one with chalk ink, but I can only put 4 pictures in this post.

Here's the fourth attempt.  I used ColorBox chalk ink in rouge.

Thank you, everyone, for posting about how it's going.  I'm glad to know what kinds of inks and embossing folders work well with this technique.

Sadie, the first embossing folder you used looks like it has an equal amount of embossed and debossed letters on it so you got a completely different look--more like letterpress.  They'll make terrific backgrounds for your Halloween cards.  I love the way the card you posted turned out.  It's good to see that this technique will work with the fine-line images on your embossing folder.

Connie, your card is beautiful and elegant.  You also used an embossing folder with a more detailed image, and it looks wonderful.

Sarah, I definitely like the ones with chalk ink the best.  Only one of my tries turned out with that spotted look you got with the dye inks.  I have no idea why.  That one is just different.  The others were more uneven and splotchy; those were the ones that looked better when I repeated the process with them.  How about trying the chalk ink with the spotty one.  I already sprayed mine with water to see if the distress ink would mellow so I think it's too late to use another type of ink on it.  (The water didn't help.)

Thank you for all your efforts.

I like the results posted so far.

I am sounding like a broken record, but the folder that Connie used looked like the perfect one for this technique. Sadie also got nice results!

Craft Nerd, with a large background like in your ornament folder, I think it is easier to see imperfections, however, I think you did end up getting some nice results in the last few.  I like the pink one as well.

I have a couple other folders in mind I might try today.  I am going to try some chalk ink first and see how that goes. I do think Distress ink beads up too much to get a good result, but I might try some of my light dye inks.

Thanks for sharing everyone!

Okay, I just had some success!

1) I ran my folder through once horizontally and once vertically.  No idea if that had an impact, but I am mentioning it.

2) I tried my colorbox chalk ink, some Gina K dye ink, and the same Linen Avery Elle pigment ink I tried Saturday.  They all worked!  The dye ink is just a little streaky because of how it slighly beads up.  The pigment ink looks the best, but they all look good.  I also tried distress ink and got bad results.

3) I used the same embossing folder I used Saturday!

4) The difference!!???  The paper I used was some in my stash that is not the Neenah paper that I usually stamp on. It is probably some cheaper paper I got at the craft store, it has a slightly rougher texture and it looks like the stuff I sometimes have trouble stamping on because it wicks the ink out into the fibers.  So the paper, I hypothesize, soakes the ink in faster!  Maybe the Neenah stuff is coated to make it smooth so that does not happen????

5) Other notes: My cuttlebug definitely needed a 1 cardstock shim.  It made a difference.
Brayering leaves a thinner coat of ink than pressing the inkpad directly to the folder.  Brayering was more even and was less likely go get in the embossed portions.  However, there was just a little less coverage on the ones where I used the brayer, but it still looks good.

I am SUPER happy with the results!  And super happy I found a use for the cheap cardstock that I won't stamp on!

I used card stock out of my cheapy drawer too, I think it is some Georgia pacific white cardstock I picked up at Walmart years ago.  So Maybe you need a cheapy base for this to work and get good coverage with the ink.  I do know that the cheapy white card stock in general embosses of any paper I have tried in the embossing folders.  And if you ink it first you get some really nice effects after embossing in a folder.

To correct or clarify that one statement, I get the best embossing using this cheap cardstock compared to any other cardstock.  The impression is good and it kind of mashes the fibers and you get a different feel to the paper when you are done embossing.

Thank you so much for the experimentation and the comments.  That's what I love about our challenges.  I always learn so much from the people who share their problems and solutions.  You guys don't just give up!

I'm looking forward to seeing your projects.

Sadie, I have some of that Georgia Pacific paper.  I don't like it so I use it to protect my cards when I send them by mail.  Now I have to try it with this technique.  I had wondered if the paper was the problem.  However, the technique seems to be very popular among Stampin' Up! demonstrators, and they all use SU's Whisper White or Very Vanilla.  They're very smooth like Neenah Classic Crest so I figured that wasn't the problem.

I'm adding the advice posted on this thread to the Word document where I saved my challenge.  I don't want to forget it.  I've also added it to the original post.

Thank you to everyone who has shared.

Am I the only one who likes Georgia Pacific paper?  I don't use it if I'm coloring with Copics, but I use it for my card bases and if I'm coloring with colored pencils.

I use the Georgia Pacific as my card bases also, I use to use it for coloring on also but have found other papers I like more for that.  I happened to use the white cheap paper that comes in those thick packs at  Michaels they have on sale every now and then that are 3 for $10, so maybe that is why I got good coverage also.

I've used Georgia Pacific in the past, but I don't see it very often.  Maybe because I hate going to Walmart!!
For my wedding card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2051#top_display_media) I used Neenah Exact Index that came in a big pack at Office Depot or Office Max.

I had good luck with chalk inks both Colorbox and VersaMagic.
I think my embossed piece may be upside down!  Haha!  It was too late when I noticed, and decided it looked more like hearts that way!  I used the same EF as Conniecrafter.

These are some of the best results I've ever gotten from this technique and I've tried inking EFs before.  Thanks for the tips and video djc and everyone who's posted.

When I was in the gallery, I wondered if Connie's and Cindi's cards were the same EF.  But I wasn't sure!

I have one card finished, but I was having so much fun, I made lots of backgrounds.
Title: Re: INK15--Bisque Pottery Technique

Cindi, that card is gorgeous!  I think that design could go either way.  Just don't mention that you think it's upside down.

I'm happy to know what kind of cardstock you used.  I recently heard that the Neenah Exact Index was a good cardstock, and I planned to try it out.  Is it sturdier than the Georgia Pacific?  The 110-lb. Georgia Pacific isn't as sturdy as the 80-lb. Stampin' Up or the 80-lb. Neenah Classic Crest.

I'm glad everyone is sharing what they used-- embossing folder, cardstock, and inks.

Daria

ETA:  Heidi, both Connie and Cindi used the Cuttlebug Textile Embossing Folder.  After I saw their cards, I checked my inventory list to see if I had that folder and was very happy that I do.  I've never used it, but that's going to change quickly.

I hate Walmart, too.  I only go there to pick up Georgia Pacific cardstock.

I have that EF too.  Both Connie and Cindi got great results with it.  So I may have to give it a try.

The Neenah Exact Index says 110lb.  I held it next to a piece of SU white and I think they are pretty comparable, the Neenah seems a hair stiffer.  I use it for card bases and I've been stamping on it too.  SU feels just a bit smoother.

The textile cuttlebug folder worked great.  I also tried an Anna Griffin folder that had more open white space.  It worked pretty well but I noticed a few spots that should have been white, had a little ink on them.  I think it was a little more open design.  Probably could have done better with more careful brayering.

Thanks, Cindi.  I saw that it comes in different weights, but the weight isn't always a good indication of how heavy/sturdy the paper is.

I have seen some Neenah paper in Target, I will need to take a closer look to see which kind it is.  It wasn't Classic Crest, so I ignored it. I did not know if they had other paper that was good for stamping.

Boy, oh boy!  I visited my sister today, and when I got back home I found all kinds of goodies in the gallery.  Now I know why I love this technique so much.  Your cards are all simply fabulous!

I played around last night with Color Box Fluid Chalk Ink in French Blue.  It worked out so well.  Thank you for the advice you posted.  I used my usual Neenah Classic Crest Solar White cardstock, and it worked just fine.  (Yes, I made a couple with the Cuttlebug Textile EF that Cindi and Connie used.  Sooooo pretty!)  Mostly, I used different snowflake embossing folders.  Those will show up on some Christmas cards when I get around to them.

Since this technique is all about the embossing folder, I figured I would engaging in some enabling.  Jo-Ann's has Darice EF on sale: 5 for $10.  That applies to both the $4.99 and $5.99 folders.

I had fun and great success with this challenge.  This was the first I had tried the letterpress paper from HA. It seemed to contrast with what others here used for their backgrounds.  The closest paper I have used is Strathmore's paint pad. It is a firm paper with minimal texture on one side.

On a side note I am looking forward to beginning a series of three classes to learn how to use a letterpress.  At this point it prints one design at a time without embossing but it will be fun to learn the use of this classic printing machine.

Thanks Daria for a great challenge!

Jan, I saw your card in the gallery last night.  It's beautiful.  I know that the soft colors we're using on these cards don't usually show up that well in photos and scans; they are wonderful in real life.

I almost didn't offer this challenge because of the problems I had initially and it's similarity to letterpress.  I'm glad I did; I've learned a lot from the posts on this thread, and I love the results we're getting.

Nora and I are off to a workshop today along with another stamping buddy.  It's one of those all-day Marathon classes Stamp on Over offers three times a year.  I'll check in when I get back.

We have just the weekend left to play.  I haven't done a single challenge other than my own.  Tops on my list is the Marble Background Technique.  I love the fun and energy this technique adds to a card, but I've never tried it with embossing.  I'm hoping today's class will energize me and get me back into the craft room.

Jan that is very interesting about the special paper you have.  It would be interesting to compare all the papers and figure out once and for all which works the best for this.  TFS.

I knew how to do this one.  Made snowflake cards for Christmas last year, totally stained folder doing this.  I got too much into projection to worry about cleaning folder.  My fault.
I made you the words folder in red, but looks pink.

I put it in the gallery.

Here's a link to Yankee's card. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2097#top_display_media)

Cool card!  That embossing folder is perfect with this technique, and I love the glitter dust.

I finally got the card finished with the ornament bisque piece.

The ribbon I used was actually from my cousin's bridal shower. Apparently, when you do gift wrap at Bed, Bath & Beyond it includes absolutely gorgeous purple ribbon.

Thank you, one and all, for particpating in this challenge.  You came up with some wonderful advice so that we can all now use this beautiful technique with ease, and the cards you posted are so elegant.

I know the winner.

I wrote all your names on a piece of paper, folded each one over and over, stuck them into my straw hat, bounced them around and around.  This time, I asked Heidi to choose one while they were still bouncing--reminded me of bingo balls.  Can you believe that she still mixed them up with her hand even though they were bouncing all around inside that hat??!!

Oh, the winner . .  .

Kathy, I love your card!  I mentioned elsewhere that I have backgrounds that didn't turn out looking at all like bisque china, but I like them anyway.  I like one of them as well as the ones that turned out the way I had originally hoped for.  I sure hope no one dumped out their trial and error pieces.

Daria

ETA:  OK.  I admit it.  I did throw out a couple that I thought were beyond saving.  lol.

I used three of my backgrounds to make 3 out of 4 cards in a card set I just completed to give as a gift. I have had the images colored for a month, and these backgrounds even longer, so I am glad to have them ready to send out!

The fourth card does not use the backgrounds but it is also posted in the gallery.
