Title: INK16 Heidi's Challenge (10/15-10/23) Winner Announced!
Post by: howdyheidi on October 13, 2016, 12:16:48 PM
Because I couldn't come up with a catchy name this time!

*****If you use they keyword INK16-Heidi in the keyword section (below the photo when uploading), all the entries should show up in this link: http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/thumbnails.php?search=INK16-Heidi&submit=search&album=search&title=on&newer_than=&caption=on&older_than=&keywords=on&type=AND )

Get out your alcohol inks! I would like you to use the Polished Stone Technique to make at least one background.

I find the hardest part of doing this is getting out the materials, so once I have out the alcohol inks, I like to make plenty of backgrounds to use.  I just love the way they look, but it is nicer to have a few laying around, so that is what I was thinking when I decided on this challenge.

***There will be a RAK for this challenge.  You get one entry just for posting at least one background in the gallery.  You will get another entry for submitting each finished project.  (So, if you make 3 cards, you would get 4 entries, does that make sense?)

I know that there are many tutorials for this technique using different materials and even under different names.  You may use any tutorial and it would be nice if you let us know which one if it is out of the ordinary.

Here are a few tutorials I like:

Splitcoast Stampers (uses reinkers, glossy cardstock and alcohol). http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/polished_stone/

Enchanted Gallery (uses adirondack alcohol inks by ranger, lots of examples of color combos) http://www.theenchantedgallery.com/alcohol.html

Ellen Hutson (uses copic marker refills and blender solution). http://ellenhutson.typepad.com/the_classroom_new/2010/06/tuesday-technique-recipie-pearlized-polished-stone-by-lisa-strahl.html

Jennifer McGuire (Ranger products, from thinking inking 2009 classes, Polished stone is shown in the first video). http://www.jennifermcguireink.com/2009/07/thinking-inking-alcohol-inks-two-videos.html

Please add information about your favorite resources and feel free to ask questions!  I hope you will have fun revisiting an old technique!

I made 4 backgrounds and will be posting and listing them here.  The color combos will be in their gallery posts.

Thanks for the cool challenge.  I have done this technique in ages. I saw your backgrounds in the gallery but didn't get a chance to comment yet.  They are stunning.

So, you know I'm going to ask, obviously you can't combo for the background, but if we make a card can that be combined with other challenges?

Oh yes, I meant to update that earlier (I did remember you would ask!) YES, you can combine this with other challenges where that is allowed.

I think this is where I will start today!  Thanks Heidi!

I just finished 6 backgrounds - I cut 8.5x11 glossy cardstock in half.  Otherwise I would have way too much.  And my hands are covered in alcohol ink.

I got the backgrounds made with alcohol inks, did several.

Made a fall card with orange background, combined it with the spotty dotty.

Craft Nerd, so glad you were able to get a lot of backgrounds made. I know how hard it is to get the AI off your hands.

Yankee, I love all your backgrounds and your completed card.  Really cool combo!  Thanks very much for sharing and participating in my challenge!

I made a whole lot of tags using this alcohol ink technique.  Here (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=91&pid=2956#top_display_media) is the result.  I hope you can see them, when you use a silver mixative it makes it hard to photograph them.

I finally uploaded all of the photos of the background I made.

Blue Backgrounds (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=2957)

Autumn Background (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=2958)

Green Background (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=2959)

Halloween Background (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=2960)

Purple Background (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=2961)

I've actually made 6 cards already using the backgrounds I made, using the Halloween, Green and Purple Backgrounds.

I know what I'm doing with Autumn Background, but I'm not sure what I'm doing with the blue ones yet.

I did two of each color combo but they looked pretty similar so I just posted one of each

Awesome, Connie, those look great!

Craft Nerd, I loved all of yours too!

Sadie, I agree about the mixative making them hard to photograph, but it is worth it sometimes I think.

Thanks everyone for working on my challenge!

Yay-just posted my first Christmas card for the season. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=2963&message_id=22dcec19b5fe3c89e7e19fb05d0ed34d&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock).  Thanks Heidi for this challenge to make polished stone backgrounds.  I used it along with Connie's challenge of stamping one acetate. Wish I could have captured all the sparkle on the ornaments in a photo.

Here is a photo sample (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=91&pid=2964#top_display_media) of some my polished stone background on yupo.

This was a really fun challenge and card to make...Thanks Heidi!

Jan, I really love the AI on the yupo, that is so pretty.  Your finished card is just such a great Christmas card, and a great combo!  Thanks so much for participating in my challenge.

Oh my other challenges are almost complete so I return with another polished stone.  This one has another use of the emboss resist-ghost like effect.

Tim's description of this technique in chemistry 103 indicated that this technique does not work so well on Ranger's glossy paper because it is porous.  I remember several people had a hard time with the technique during a challenge at 2Peas so perhaps used different brands of glossy cardstock. I know at that time I was using a quality clay coated glossy paper from an online store that is now out of business.

Tim also demonstrated that Ranger's Hickory Smoked Gray Archival ink makes a clearer image than archival black.  I really wish such changes on the use of products would be available on an on-going post on Ranger's website.

PS-I also learned now there is a Snow Cap Mixative which will lighten some of the darker alcohol inks to more of a pastel color.

Heidi, I had so much fun tonight!  Thanks for the push to get the alcohol inks out again.  Once they were out, I had trouble quitting! I'd start to clean up and then think about another color combo.  I made 8 polished stone backgrounds and a couple stripes and plaids just for fun.  I used glossy cardstock.  Only after I cleaned up (thanks to your question on the Go Fish thread, you prompted me to clean up after this project!), did I look at what everyone else has done.  Now I'd like to try yupo at some point, but that would probably occupy another whole night!  I'll wait till I finish some challenges.  I will post links tomorrow.  Thanks for this challenge!

I really enjoyed looking at all of the backgrounds and projects!  All of you have been very productive!  Beautiful results.

I love the color suggestions on the enchanted gallery site!  Great link!  I also watched part of Jennifer McGuire's Thinking Inking video as a refresher.

I gave the colors I used, but now I remember I added some Snow Cap on one, but can't remember which! Maybe the blues?
Here are my backgrounds :
fall and bright (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2989#top_display_media)
blues (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2990#top_display_media)
greens (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2991#top_display_media)
purples (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2992#top_display_media)

Lots to play with!  Thanks Heidi!

So many of you have posted backgrounds (and lots of them) and projects!  I knew I would get myself into a pickle for counting the number of entries for the RAK, but I will take some time to figure it out.

I am so pleased that everyone is enjoying themselves! I was hesitant to offer this challenge because I thought you might not want to drag out your alcohol inks, so yay!

Sarah, I love your Halloween cards, you have some neat stamps to pair with your backgrounds.

Yankee, I just love your new cute stamps!!!  What are they? I have never seen them before anywhere.

Jan reminded me of that technique of stamping the archival ink and then rubbing it off (although I tried it tonight and it didn't really work for some reason, i think I had A LOT of AI on my background.)

Stampwilly has the most beautiful peacock background and stamp combo!

I am so thankful that you all are able to participate in my challenge!

I made a card for Jan's Holiday Stylin challenge and your challenge using one of my polished stone backgrounds and another piece of glossy cs that I swiped off some AI on from another polished stone background (it is now church windows)!

Here is my Holiday Stylin (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=3019#top_display_media) card with a polished stone sky.

Thanks for the challenge, Heidi!  It has been a fun week.  I have the beginnings of one more card that will use my green polished stone ... but that will have to wait till another day!

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to do this challenge.  It felt good to me to be using my shash of alcohol inks again, and I hope you felt the same way. It was really fun to see the different color combos, the glossy papers and yupo being used!  It will be fun to go back and try even more color combos by looking at all your backgrounds!

Well, i took a bit of time to figure out how many entries everyone had.  It took a while and I checked it twice. I assigned everyone numbers then and used Random.org to pick a random integer.
