Creativation 2020
« on: January 15, 2020, 10:29:21 AM »
I'm watching a Tim Holtz video about new alcohol ink products and thought I would share.  Maybe you have seen a video you'd like to link here, either pre-release videos or Creativation footage.

Let us know what you like and what you don't care about.  Are you making a wish list of new products?

If you are moving alcohol inks around by blowing through a straw.  Tim Holtz basically says "stop it"!  You are too close to the fumes.  He has a new tool.  If it's not too pricey or available to purchase using a coupon, I think Jan and I can say it's probably worth it!  We took an AI class.  Blowing through a straw was not that easy and apparently not good for us either.  I immediately thought of the distress marker spritzer ... I even have a pre-distress marker spritzer, ha!  Tim mentions that, and says the opening on the new tool is bigger to give more air flow.  See what you think.  Also, I guess Ranger noticed that people are buying other brands of AI, especially gold, to get that broken up gold flake, veining look.  They came out with new metallics called alloys.

I may be interested in the alloys. I have considered getting the Piñata gold but it isn’t as convenient as buying ranger alcohol inks (I would have to make a special online purchase.)

There is no way I am getting the little blower thing. I still have those ear/nose bulbs around the house for babies, and I would use that, or still the straw, before buying that huge tool from Tim!  I also recently saw a video where a gal used a hairdryer, and got great results.

I haven’t seen too much Creativation buzz yet, so I am interested in seeing the new stuff!

I used this You tube search:  Creativation 2020  And found several video-just be sure you select ones that are 2020. I will need to try out how the new  blower before I know if it will work with my hands.  I know the one for use with markers does not really provide enough air to move the AI sufficiently.

Recently I have been looking at U-videos that folks who enjoy alcohol inks are using titles that reference "Wispy Edges. Techniques are kinda similar with the use of lots of rubbing alcohol to thin the colors which sometimes split into a combo of colors.  Folks seem to use various heating/blowing guns to achieve flowing edges. I hope to try some of my new brands of alcohol inks for experiments.  See Joggles range of Alcohol Inks.  She demonstrates some basic samples to explain characteristics of these new products.

I have several paper trimmers and they are not very space efficient.  I am disappointed that Tim didn't come up with an alternative.  Tim's edges look very nice.  But I will hold-out and use my Fiskar scissors,  dies, or  hand tear light weight paper.

If I worked on scrapbooks I might think of this tool in a far different way.

Jan, I agree that I cannot find space for a paper trimmer with a fancy edge.  I’m sure it works very well, though.

Yes, I have also see the term “whispy edge” for the alcohol ink look.  I was talking to DH who is a chemist about whether he thinks that the alcohol inks are bad to blow around with a straw, and we both decided that it is probably better to blow away from yourself with a straw that to blow in different directions with that tool.  (And they probably aren’t very dangerous anyhow, especially a low quantity).

And I do need to check out the Joggles tutorials!

I haven't watched Joggles videos yet on all the different brands of Alcohol inks she's carrying.  I haven't played with my A inks in a long time.  I already bought the Pinata gold and silver so I don't need the alloys but they look a lot nicer than the old mixatives.  It's very easy to get too much!  I have to admit I'm a bit tempted by the air blower thingy ... if it's priced right and I play with my inks again ... I don't recall having much success with the straw.  Haha!  No ear/nose syringes around our house, but I know where I might snag one!

Hmm, the deckle edge looks cool.  I think he's over selling!  "You can move your piece around using the grid to get the part of the deckle you want"?!  Haha!  (doubt if I can see it that well, or that any part of it looks noticeably different).  If I was in the midst of creating a Heritage scrapbook album ... maybe it would be worth it?  I will probably continue to use dies, scissors or hand tearing.  Maybe they should have put a hole in it for hanging on the wall?  Flat surfaces are valuable real estate!

He's making me want to make something with a deckle edge!  Ugh!  I must be in a vulnerable state of mind.  I need to go clean my craft room to remind myself that I don't need it!  Don't have room for it!

Exactly, Jan!

Or it would be wonderful to use at a scrapbook store or library with a Maker Space like yours.

Off topic ... but I just ran in to someone in the grocery store who told me our library has a once a month "crafternoon" and a "creating for a cause" group.  I need to check them out.

The TH facebook lives are way too long ... but I find myself watching.  They are really helpful though.  At first glance I wasn't really interested in any of the Chapter 1 die release, but after watching ... maybe.  Also just now watching a Sizzix die in Chapter 2, a mixed media set, Media Marks, with a scribble, x's, dashed line, etc.  To look at the packaging you would think the die cuts an outer rectangle, but he explains it doesn't.  It just cuts x's (etc.).  Much more useful.  So I NEED to watch videos, right?!  Ha!

I've been watching all his videos on all the new releases, there are a couple dies I would like, some of the new alloys, I have tried using my foil on the AI before it dries, and I love that look.
I had tried the straw blowing also and was shocked when he said that wasn't good, I saw in another video where a girl just used a regular hair dryer on the cool setting and low speed and it seemed to work nice and thought I might try that.  I agree some of his video's are long, he could probably cut out all the isn't that amazing but I guess that gets people excited about the product, makes him a good salesman.

It's always fun to watch the video's of new goodies coming out :)

I saw on instagram that Heidi Swapp has finally come out with an ink (inkpad, I think??) that is a toner ink, so you can foil your stamped images.  That sounds fun!!!!

Yes, toner ink!  I've bought several types of toner mediums, gel, toner pens ... and I haven't used them.  A simple ink pad, yes!

What did you think of the glaze embossing powders?
I think they look really pretty cool.  Not sure if I'd use it so much on a card though, and that's what I mostly make ... but it looks so cool!  And simple to use ... oh, I did like it over the top of the paper dolls!

I just took a journaling class and she gave us formulas for mixing Golden mediums with paint to make a faux bees wax.   Difference is that it's matte.  It looks nice, smeared over just a portion of a journal page ... but you have to mix it, store it in a jar, spread it and let it dry ...
The benefit over real bees wax is that you can stamp and adhere other layers over it.  She said you can't stamp or adhere anything over bees wax.  The wax is the very final layer.

What about the distress ink storage tins?  I like those too!  Jeepers ... I like just about all of it!  I like the tin, but I don't know that I'll buy any.  Maybe just for transporting ink, but not for craft room storage.  It would take up a lot more room than I currently have dedicated to distress and oxides ... but I do like the way the insert makes the inks easily to grab individually, and it keeps the lids tight.

Yes, Tim's enthusiasm ... he's a good salesman.  It's easy to be enthused about those "makes".  The samples are gorgeous!

I wonder what the "word, or phrase" will be at Creativation this year?  Last year I heard a lot of "that's my jam", and "makes" may have started there as well.  Haha!

The Lawn Fawn Magic Iris interactive die set is pricey, but it looks like people really like it.  You can reserve it to buy at Simon Says Stamp
