Title: Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge, 2016

Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge -- 2016

Some of you have gotten a head start on our holiday cards by participating in Cindi's Christmas All Year! Challenge.  This month, I'm taking over for Cindi by offering our yearly Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge.  I have made exactly one Christmas card this year—the one I posted for AIR16.  I need to make more Christmas cards.  I think I’ve seen some similar comments posted by others so I know I’m not alone.  Come join me for this month’s challenge and make lots of cards.

The Challenge:
You have a full month--July 1 through July 31--to post your entries in the album set aside for this challenge in the gallery and link them to this Discussion Thread.  The challenge ends on July 31 at 11:59 pm your time.

Remember you must enter only new cards--nothing you made or posted prior to July 1, the first day of the challenge.  If you have a special technique you'd like to use that does not include stamping, your card will still count.  It would be nice to combine stamping with other techniques, but sometimes that isn't feasible, and I want your cards to be something you will love.  So your paste-embossed, embroidered, stenciled, Iris folded, etc. cards are welcome.

Requirements:
1. Complete the tasks as described in this challenge.

2. When you post your card in the gallery, please label it with the name of the appropriate holiday and add the words "in July." For example, Christmas in July, Hanukkah in July, Kwanzaa in July, etc.

3. When you post your project in the gallery, describe it. Tell how you made it and what you used.  Thanks to Sadie, we have more space in which to describe our posted cards so don’t be stingy with your comments.   Some information that you could share:
Stamps:
Cardstock/Papers:
Card Size:
Inks/Coloring Medium:
Accessories:
Technique:

Next, come back to this Discussion Thread to link your post here and to tell us how it went--the good and the bad.

Combining Challenges:
You can combine this challenge with another challenge as long as the host of the other challenge will also allow it.

Prize:
There will be a prize awarded at the end of the challenge.  Your name will go into the hat once for every card you post in the gallery and link to the discussion thread. OK. I already know that the next question is do I get my name in the hat 10 times if I make 10 of the same card. I'll say you can get your name in the hat up to three times for multiples of the same design. Fair enough? There's no limit to the number of different cards you can post. You'll get credit for each different card.

I hope you'll join us and begin making your December holiday cards.  We can inspire and motivate each other.  Don't forget to have fun!

Thanks for offering this challenge! I hope to make at least 5 cards this month!  I am not home at the moment, but I have a new Christmas stamp and embossing folder sitting on my craft desk at home that I hope to use as soon as I can!

Great, Heidi.  I'm hoping to make up for all the cards I didn't make the first half of the year.

Thanks for this challenge. It always helps me to get more Christmas cards done. Near the end of the month I will be stamping with friends so I will work on them then! Something to look forward to!

I just finished the backgrounds for six cards I began on Thursday.  I just need to stamp and assemble them.  They are drying now; I hope to finish them today.  Yea!

I have posted my first cards for this challenge.  I made the same background I used for the owl card.  Jan's Blend It! Challenge for AIR16 has me blending ink again.

SU Cozy Christmas Card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=90&pid=2793#top_display_media)

Set of Six Cards (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=90&pid=2794#top_display_media)

One thing I learned is not to use a punch to cut Therm-o-Web's Masking Magic.  I used my Creative Memories circle punch and spent the next twenty minutes prying the pieces of paper and film out of it.  For a while, I thought I'd ruined it forever, but with some fine tools, I was able to dislodge the stuck pieces.  Advice:  Use scissors or dies.

I've never used Wink of Stella to produce splatter before, and it worked great.  I shook up the pen (cap on), and then I removed the cap and held the end with one hand and tapped on it with the pointing finger of the other hand.  It worked great.  In addition to the larger dots you can see in the photos, there're finer dots of silver on the background that you can see when you move the card or hold it under light.

For the next bunch, I'm either going to make more of the Christmas card I posted to my Pillow Top Challenge, or CASE a super easy card I saw at Mainely Stamping in Fairfield.

TFL.

Daria, here is my first Christmas card for this year - finally!  I am so behind.  I will most likely not be able to participate in this challenge for the rest of this month, as you are aware I will be away from home.

Thank you for offering this challenge!

Nora, your card is beautiful!  I have to try using the Brushos with a stencil.  I love the look you got!

Thank you for playing.  I'm glad you were able to complete one card before your trip.

I stamped and colored 3 of the same image on the 4th, playing with my mom and sister.  Yesterday I tried completing them in to cards ... not that successful.  Hope to try again today!

Cindi, that's the way I do it too.  I made six pillow-top backgrounds first.  Then, since I'm copying a card I already made, I was able to cut and fold the card bases and cut the mats and watercolor pieces for the focal piece.  Next, I'll do the stenciling, then the paste embossing, then assembly, and then the Wink of Stella.  Oh,  yeah, and the inserts.  Hmmm.  That sounds like a lot, but it's really an easy card.  Or maybe not.  lol.

I'm dealing with the feral cats that live in my back yard.  A lovely, wonderful lady is helping me to catch them and get them spayed.  I'm going to bring the kittens into the house so we can treat their ills and tame them so they are adoptable.  It is a lot more work than I realized, but it's wonderful to actually be doing something.  The cat population in my back yard is out of control and growing.  It will be so wonderful to get the kittens to the point where they are adoptable.

So far, I have only one kitten in the house, and she managed to escape from her pen; it took me a half hour to find her.  The room she's in is a large family room where I keep my two indoor cats and the TV set.  And all the boxes of stuff that don't fit anywhere else.  The good thing was, in order to find the kitten, I had to start moving boxes, and I started going through them.  I think I've just started a much-needed purge of unnecessary stuff.

However, I am determined to make a lot more cards this month!

I have two images colored well enough to use. I hope to be able to make them into cards later tonight.

Daria, it sounds like that card you are making has a lot of steps!  I so rarely do anything assembly line.  I wonder if I really should for Christmas cards, but it just hasn't been my style to work that way.  But I really admire people who do!
Title: Re: Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge, 2016

Heidi, I only do it at Christmas time when I duplicate some of the cards three to six times.  Once I have a prototype made, the others are so easy to do.  This time I'm copying the pillow-top card with paste embossing that I posted during AIR16.  I always stamp extra images so I don't have to start from the absolute beginning if I mess the first one up.  If I do mess one up, it becomes the one I experiment on.  Works for me.  If I really like the way a card turns out, I'll use the extra images to make another one while all the supplies are at hand.

I've been in a real slump lately.  I think I'll just copy cards for a while--other people's cards and my cards that I especially liked.  Maybe that will help get me back into the groove.  There are some wonderful cards out there that someone else has already designed.

I'll be looking for your cards.  I hope I can get into the craft room to at least stencil the colors in.  That's something I cannot do with a tiny kitten curled up on my chest.  She thinks I'm her mother.  lol.

Daria, I think that is so fun that you are raising the kittens and helping control the population in your yard.

I do have two cards, very similar, but not the same, to share.

English Robin 1 (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2798#top_display_media)

And English Robin 2. (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2799#top_display_media)

I have many more ideas for cards too!  I would like to try coloring this image on black and I have some stamps I ordered coming that will work for Christmas cards too.

Thanks for hosting, I hope to get a lot more done!

I just finished stenciling mine.  Stenciling the same image six times (actually seven, I messed up one) isn't that much fun.  Now that they are all stenciled, I'm reconsidering the paste embossing.  I might just leave them the way they are; I rather like them as they are.

Thank you for playing.

I finished four more cards--three Merry Christmas and one Feliz Navidad.  I copied these from a sample card I saw at Mainely Stamping, a small stamp store in Fairfield, CA.  I changed mine a tiny bit, but basically the cards are the same.  Feliz Navidad (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?pid=2808&message_id=40bfad3c8d79f651d97dda4510827379&message_icon=info#cpgMessageBlock)

I used Dritz Fray Check on the ribbon.  I almost always use it on the raw edges, and it has never left a mark once it had dried.  This time, it did leave a mark.  I cut the edges again, leaving just a tiny bit of the ribbon treated with Fray Check.  Works for me.

Daria, your bow is perfect!

I have two more cards today.  I did the same thing as last time and made two variations of the same card.  That seems to satisfy the need to get cards made and my "need" to make them all different.

Here is the 1st variation (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2811#top_display_media) and here is the second (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2812#top_display_media).

I'm so happy to see some of you are being productive this month!

I still have only 1 card finished and two more of the same image to finish in to cards ... hopefully soon!

Daria, your stenciled cards look great.  I didn't realize they weren't the same as the original paste embossed card, had to take a second look.  Love the classy look the stenciling gives and your pillowtop backgrounds are a nice match.

April, cute deer cards!  Love the brusho background ... I need to get my color bursts out!

And Heidi, such cute ribbon images, and so cleanly stamped!

Keep up the good work  ;)

Heidi, I love the way you used the ribbon stamps to create a fun background for a Christmas card.  Nice sentiment circle too!

Cindi, we have two adults "fixed."  We'll start capturing more of those a week from now when a clinic spot will be available.  I have eighteen adorable kittens in two pens in the house.  (I thought there were twelve.)  Some of them had eye problems so we are giving all of them eye ointment and antibiotics.  They are so sweet.  It's hard to believe that they are the same kittens I couldn't even approach when they were outside.  Once they are two pounds, healthy, and friendly with people, they will go to a no-kill shelter that will try to find them homes.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that that happens.  There are a lot of homeless kittens out there in need of homes.

OH my goodness, 18 kittens!  I was at the pet store earlier this week for some supplies, and they had a bunch of cute kittens for adoption. I was tempted, but I think my 15 year old cat would not have been happy.

Cindi, I love your basket of holly!

I have one more card completed, but it is sitting on deck while I decide if it needs any embellishments or not.

Yikes!  Eighteen kittens?!  Daria, you are a saint!  I just heard a story on the news here that there are tons of kittens at the Humane Society.  Why don't people spay and neuter their cats?!!

I'm happy you like my Holly Basket!  Haha!  There is a funny story behind it.  Today I did a stamped image search to see if I could find the manufacturer because I stamped it at my mom's and didn't remember who made it.  Well, I found out I colored it "differently" (or you could say, "wrong")!   I had a hard time deciding where exactly some of the holly leaves went.  It is a cling stamp with just a black outline, no picture, for the index.  So today when I found the image and some samples on a UK site, it turns out I turned part of the basket in to holly.  I'm sharing with you, but I doubt the recipients will notice  :o

I painted 3 baskets on the 4th of July and just today got them on to finished cards (well sort of, the insides aren't stamped yet, I confess).  I was feeling uninspired when it came to deciding on a layout.  Sorry for the delay.  I uploaded the first card, ran out to meet DH for a quick dinner and just got back.  Well, I might have stopped at J's and M's on the (out of the)way home. ::)

Holly Basket 1 (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2817#top_display_media)

Holly Basket 2 (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2818#top_display_media)

Holly Basket 3 (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2819#top_display_media)

Here (http://www.thestampman.co.uk/stampendous-crq163-cling-rubber-stamp---holly-basket-18784-p.asp) is a picture of the stamp with samples underneath (You can see the rest of the basket, on the left side, haha!)

Cindi, you set me up!  lol.  I love all three, but you're right.  The first one you posted isn't my favorite one either.  I prefer the ones with the all-around mat; my favorite is #2.

You did a great job coloring them.  After looking at the samples you linked here, I went back and looked at yours.  They still look fine!  Then I went to see what I had done with this image.  I remember having trouble with it so I went looking for a sample too.  I knew who made it so it wasn't too hard to find some.  However, comparing mine to yours, I can see why I wasn't that impressed with my results.  It's bland.  I need to try again and make the colors warmer and more vibrant the way you did.

  heehee, didn't mean to set you up!  I was late for dinner!

I debated adding some sparkle to this, but didn't know if it really fit the homey image (and didn't want to mess it up).  I didn't have them at the time, but now I have a few Spectrum Noir Sparkle pens, might be pretty?

I was thinking the image would be nice with a sentiment like "from our house to yours" but I didn't have anything like that.
Title: Re: Winter Holiday Cards in July Challenge, 2016
Post by: howdyheidi on July 15, 2016, 09:04:36 AM
I did add some embellishments to my card and posted it in the gallery here (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2821#top_display_media).

I tried so many different colors on the partridge stamp.  I tried to use realistic colors at first, and quickly figured out that it was not going to look right.  I think because the drawing is not realistic.  So I did use brown, but made his back light and tummy dark (it is opposite in real life) and then he looked a lot better.

Sorry the photo is a bit blurry.  I will be using this stamp again, I like the look of it.

So I met my goal of 5 cards, but now I hope that get a few more done too. I do not know how many I have made this year, but I know it is not many!

Heidi, I love the image you used.  I agree with your coloring decisions.  I am always drawn to the Partridge in a Pear Tree.  I think I have at least three of them.  When I commented on it, I called it stylized; I think it has almost an oriental gracefulness about it.  A winner!  Use it more!

I need to find some of those fun candy enamel dots!

Daria

ETA:  Cindi, we need to learn a bit of calligraphy.  I wanted to use "Silver Bells" on the cards where I used silver Wink of Stella on the bells, but I didn't have that sentiment stamp.  If you want to try your sparkle pens with that image, stamp it again.  That way you can try it out and see if you like it without messing up the beautiful ones you've already made.

Thank you Daria.

I found the enamel dots, they are American crafts.  http://www.acherryontop.com/shop/company/american_crafts/303942-Candy+-+Holiday+Details+Enamel+Dots

I got them at AC Moore on clearance after Christmas.

There are many partridge in a pear tree stamps!  I think I have a partridge stamp, but this is the first in a pear tree for me.  I was wondering if this one was supposed to look like it was carved in wood.  I might go back to the stamp site and see if it says anything in the description.

I started a new Christmas card today, too!

Yes we do!  I was practicing some brush calligraphy a month or so ago.  It kind of fell by the wayside like so many other projects before it!

I just got a rather large SU rotating stamp where you rotate the letters around on the handle to spell out words ... it has kind of an old typewriter look that I didn't think would fit well with my basket image.  Haven't had a chance to play with it yet.

Good for you Heidi, on to the next card!

Iring, I looked at your wonderful Holly Baskets and at the photo of the stamp.
I like the way you colored it.  That area brown doesn't look correct.
I have a wreath stamp that I color parts green that are not suppose to be green, but it looks better to me and it is my art!  If that part looks like it should be green, then it is your art to make whatever.

Good idea, Cindi.  I like to look at the sample cards and the submitted cards to see how people interpret a sketch.  I like seeing the different ways people use the sketch to create something a bit different, something you need to really check out to see that it truly was inspired by the sketch.

The other sketch sites that I often look at are
CASe this Sketch (http://casethissketch.blogspot.com). These are very minimalistic, but I often use them as a starting point and then add something.
Mojo Monday (http://mojomonday.blogspot.com). These are traditional sketches.
 Retro Sketches (http://retrosketches.blogspot.com)
Sketch Saturday (http://sketchsaturday.blogspot.com) I just found this one today.

Thanks, Heidi.  I'll add those to my list.

I guess this is the last week of July!

Here are two more cards I finally got photographed today:

Pine Branch Border (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2830#top_display_media)

Flowers and Branches (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2829#top_display_media)

I do have another Christmas background finished, but I haven't had any ideas what to do with it.

It can't be the last week!  I was going to finish a ton of cards this month.  Instead, I've been medicating, feeding, holding, and playing with eighteen kittens.  Not to mention trapping the adults.  I even got a stranger cat go into one of the traps.  Good thing because the poor thing had a foxtail in her eye and it was a mess.  The SPCA Clinic that is spaying and neutering these cats also fixed her eye.  She'll come back with the others a much happier cat.  I hope she won't be blind in that one eye; it was such a mess I thought she'd been in a fight and lost.  Fortunately, the medicating is over except for the last, elusive, kitten we caught a couple of days ago.  It is so calm.  I think he or she is happy to have found all the other kittens, and he's not alone anymore.

My daughter--you know the one I have to wake up to draw names out of the hat--has been a trooper.  She does most of the feeding, and she cleans out the litter boxes and pens.  Thank goodness!

Heidi, when someone posts more than one card, I always try to pick out a favorite.  Can't do it.  I looked back and forth at both of them, and the conclusion is I love them both.  Thank you for playing.

Wow!  I came to check and see if any holiday cards had been posted and found two rows of them!  April, they are all wonderful Christmas cards.  Love the trucks, trees, and snowmen!  Thank you for playing.

April, you are either going to be done really early for your Christmas cards, or you are going to need to add people to your list!

Great cards!

I am back with two more cards.  They are pretty much the same, but one is a One-layer card (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2844#top_display_media) with Waterbased markers, and the Other I used alcohol markers (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=2843#top_display_media) and mounted the panel on a dark base.

I think this will probably be all for me this month, although I do still have a background watercolored, I haven't figured out what I will do with it yet.  Looks like I got 10 done! Yay!

Thanks again for hosting, Daria!

I love these, Heidi.  My favorite one is the one on the black card base.  You know me; I always want a mat of some kind.  Both cards are wonderful, and I hope I can find what I need to make something similar.  Thank you for playing.

We only have two more days left.  I'm spending today with my son (his birthday).  I am hoping to make more cards tomorrow, the last day of July.

I'm still spending tons of time with the cats and kittens.  Five of the kittens have been adopted, and two more are spoken for.  This makes all the upheaval worth it.  That's seven cats that won't be homeless wanderers.  Eleven more to go!

I'm bummed that I didn't get more cards made.  I stamped 3 copies of an angel yesterday afternoon but pooped out before I got them colored.  I slept pretty late today so I should be recovered by now from sleeping in a tent last week!  We were in Oshkosh, WI for the Experimental Aircraft Association Fly-In.  Thousands of airplanes (DH estimates 10,000)!  Thousands of people.  We had a lot of fun though.  Airshow every afternoon, flying related movies at night (outside on a gigantic inflatable movie screen, with free popcorn).

Lots of dirty laundry to do today ... haha!

I'm off to get that started, then I'm anxious to come back and see what was added to the gallery last week.

Thanks for hostessing again Daria!
I'll start a thread for Christmas All Year - August.

Just caught up on this thread, I think, hopefully I didn't miss anyone.

Heidi, thanks for the sketch links!  I love your layout with the banners!

April, looks like you had a wonderful day on Saturday!  How do you manage to be so productive?!  And so many looks, from sweet, to cute, classic ... all well done!

Daria, I'm happy to hear your kittens are doing well and finding good homes.  Thank goodness your daughter is helping!  That is a lot of kittens!  I think you need that stamp April used on her purple card.

I'm here.  I'm here.

I just need to write all of your names on a slip of paper for each card you made.  I'll be back in a while.

OK.  I'm baaaack!

We made thirty-three Christmas cards in July.  Hurray!  I didn't make as many as I had hoped, but I now have ten more than I had before July.  I now have eleven.  Don't laugh!

I wrote all your names down as I scrolled through the Discussion Thread and saw links to the gallery.  Then I went to the challenge album to double-check.  I congratulate us on linking every single card we made and putting them in the correct album.  I think that's a first!

Thank you to one everyone who played.  I loved seeing all of your cards, and you gave me some good ideas to make more of my own.

I know your'e all thinking, "Enough already.  Who won?"

You know all about the trusty hat, the tiny slips of paper folded over and over, bouncing them around in said trusty hat, etc. etc. etc.

Heidi, my daughter, drew the lucky name this time.

.
She was a bit startled to see who had one.

I usually write out your user names, but . . .
.
.
.
.
.
.
 . . . this time I wrote out your real names . . .
.
.
.
.
.
.
. . . so when she saw her own name, she did a double-take.

Congratulations, Heidi!  If you haven't moved since the last time you won, then I have your address.  I think I'll wait for you to send me a PM to confirm that you're still there.

Thank you, Everyone, for playing along.

Oh wow, thank you for picking my name, Heidi!  I have to say, I already felt like a winner for finishing so many cards this month!

And, I am just as astounded that we got our cards into the right gallery.  I know all mine would be in the wrong spot if I hadn't had a little reminder earlier!

Daria, you made 10 cards this month and raise 17 or so kittens?!  That is quite an accomplishment! Thank you for hosting!

Congrats Heidi!  I have to admit, Daria, I did laugh a little at your total for the year, but only because of the way you wrote about it!  I think your total is more than mine.  Thanks for another fun month!
