Title: Creative Challenge - Batik stamping July 20 - 26th
Post by: Conniecrafter on July 20, 2020, 10:15:44 AM
I saw this on my Pinterest feed not to long ago and I am not sure if we did anything like this before or not, but I thought it had a pretty look to it, I have not had a chance to try it out yet but she has a pretty simple tutorial on her blog on how to do it.  You stamp with your versamark and use a stencil, that is up to you, you can use another stamp on the different layers if you prefer, but try to use the different inks in between like she did.  I am ok with using the whole background or pieces of it in your card like she did on some of the examples, just have fun creating, layering and inking :)

Use Creative Challenge - Batik stamping when posting and yes we can combine this with our Christmas challenge, I am thinking layering holly and poinsettias might be pretty :)
Hope you have fun with the challenge this week!

I had fun playing with this technique tonight.  I'd like to try again this week with some holly images (thanks for the idea).
I googled faux batik for a few more ideas and somewhere along the way I was reminded that sometimes people iron away the embossing powder by placing the embossed piece face down on newsprint and ironing from the back (this helped flatten the creases too).

Here (http://www.duhnproductions.com/Pics/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pid=5089#top_display_media) is my card.  Earlier this evening I found out my sister in law went to the ER in the wee hours this morning and ended up having her gall bladder removed.  Time to make a get well card!

Tip : When making my butterfly embellishment I learned ... don't stamp with distress oxide (or distress either) and then go over the whole piece with Wink of Stella!  It will smear the distress ink ... which could be ok, I thought about just adding shimmer to the butterfly wings and not the body.  I decided I wanted a cleaner look, so I started over.  This time I painted clear Wink of Stella on plain white cardstock and once it was dry, stamped over it with distress oxide.  No smearing, still get the shimmer!

Tip 2 :  Next time I might use 80lb cardstock or maybe bristol or mixed media cardstock so that it will crease nicer yet still take a bit of water.
Also, I probably should have used a bone folder.  I used Elizabeth Craft soft finish cs which is new to me.  I didn't realize it is 110 lb.  It is easy to blend ink on and does take water well though!

Attached is a photo of my batik background.  I noticed afterward that when I placed it on my card front I oriented it upside down from this photo. Oh well!

The larger flower was stamped with Versamark and clear embossed.
The smaller flower was stamped with Speckled Egg distress ink.
The leafy flourish was stamped with water.

Fun challenge Connie!

I did use Cindi tips on the paper, and I did iron off the embossing.
I used solid flowder for first layer, small butterfly for second layer.  Almost forgot to make sure ink was dry!
Third layer as large butterfly.  I used vermark ink on stamping.  I used three different blue shades of distress oxide ink.  Sure have used reg distress for a brighter look!

I made 4 backgrounds. I got the inspiration for the card I made from a batik that we bought years ago in the Caribbean. It is hanging in my craft room! I really enjoyed making these backgrounds.

Finally got mine done I did a birthday card and a Christmas card

I am not really sure I liked the crunching of the paper, I think next time I would leave that part out, I used Mixed Media paper on my dragonfly card and the snowflakes I can't remember what white cardstock I used but it was too thick I think for trying to crumble it.

It has been neat seeing what everyone has come up with for the challenge

I love your cards Connie!  Your layers of stamping and inking show up really well.  If you don't like the folds in the paper, I don't think it's necessary.  I think the sample you showed in your original post got a little bit of the look of lines just by the way they inked it.  Maybe chunkier inking instead of blending?

Yeah I don't think that makes the card, it can look good without it :)

I was able to complete one card

This is a fun technique. I did not think of bold stamps to use, so mine are pretty detailed images, but it still worked.

I need to go and look at everyone else’s cards now.

I also went down the rabbit hole of different videos of how this technique can be done and they are all pretty interesting and many give quite different results.

Thank you for the challenge.I can tell you that I would not have tried this myself with out a challenge!
