Creative Challenge: Ombré

I made this card for Heidi's Ombré Challenge. I watched the videos she linked and several more on The Mind of Watercolor channel. The artist there has a series of three videos about color washes with lots of tips. I didn’t get around to making a background until last night. I really should have watched the videos again because I didn’t remember all those good tips. I tossed my first effort. This is the second one. I wish I had managed to leave it white at the bottom of the piece. Heidi, thank you for the inspiration.

For my ombré background, I brushed water over the entire piece before adding color to the top. Then I added more water to get the color to move down the page. I alternated between adding more color and more water.

I had to convert the wood-mounted stamp to a cling stamp so I could use my stamp positioner. I needed to stamp a few times to get a complete and dark image on the watercolor paper.

CARD:
4 ¼ x 5 ½ inches
International Paper Accent Opaque Digital, 120-lb. white (card base)
Spellbinder Grid embossing folder (card base)

FOCAL PIECE:
Fabriano Extra White 140-lb hot-press watercolor paper
Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors, #50
Hero Arts Newspaper Tulips
Versamark Onyx Black ink
Gina K. Designs black cardstock
Darice Foamies Sheet, 2mm (behind focal piece and black mat)

TFL.

I think your wash is just lovely! What a pretty color. And I’m so glad you used the newsprint tulip stamp. I have that one and it was an early favorite of mine. Haven’t used it in a while.

Daria so glad to see this stamp which is a long time favorite! I admired it for a long time but finally bought the newpaper bird instead. Love the beautiful work you created to surround it!
